Last April I told you Sydney Pollack was attached to direct HBO's "dramatic re-imagining" of the 2000 election kerfuffle in Florida.
Pollack has stepped away from the director's chair for personal reasons, and Austin Powers director Jay Roach has stepped in. Pollack will remain as an executive producer, however.
Recount will focus on the five-week period that began with the recount in Florida and ended with the Supreme Court deciding in favor of George W. Bush, who, just in case you haven't been paying attention, is the president. If you're watching this movie with someone when it airs next year and someone in the room exclaims, "I can't believe he won!" that may be a sign you need to help your friend remain better informed.
All reports about this TV movie so far claim it will focus mostly on how regular Americans dealt with the ordeal, and I hope that's true. Heavy-handed politicizing grows tiresome quickly, no matter which side it happens to be coming from.

The day the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Bush was one of the saddest days of my life. Even sadder than when my wife left me.
