Friday Night Lights is a good series.
Oh, really, Adam? And why should we believe you?
I'll tell you why: because I don't like football, hated high school, and especially didn't care for high school football, or athletics of any kind. Despite all of that, Friday Night Lights has drawn me in by being one of the most objective, unflinching depictions of teenage life since Freaks and Geeks. The two series aren't comparable beyond that, but they both do away with the gloss and rose-colored hindsight prevalent in so many other TV series and movies about teens. Friday Night Lights does not try to force a certain perspective: if you think getting worked up over a sport is idiotic, this show won't change your mind, but you'll be too affected by how it both tears the town apart and brings it together to care.
So, if you've been avoiding the show, or wasting your time reading books, why not buy or rent the first season when it comes out August 28? You can get all caught up before the second season kicks off this fall on NBC. The set contains behind-the-scenes footage, deleted scenes, and episode commentary from the cast.

I don't know if I agree with you on the whole realistic high school concept. Sure, I love the show too, and what it shows of high school life seems to be realistic. The problem is that it doesn't show enough of high school life at all. How much of the time do you see the teenage main characters in classrooms, or more importantly, how many times did you hear the seniors talk about preparing for college.
I think this was probably the weakest part of the show, as a matter of fact, so it just seems a little weird you pointing out the "authenticity of high school life" of it all.

Personally, Joey, being a recently-graduated high schooler myself, I can attest to Adam's claims and would like to point out that there's a hell of a lot more to being a highscooler than the classroom aspect. In fact I'd be willing to bet if you polled a hefty group of teens they'd probably admit that that's one of the LEAST important aspects of high school life. How correct they'd be is a whole other subject, but still...FNL gets it right.
