As mentioned in today's SA, in an interview with AfterElton.com, Marc Cherry confirmed that a gay couple will be the newest residents on Desperate Housewives next season.
The couple will move into the house vacated by Betty Applewhite (Alfre Woodard) next door to Teri Hatcher's character, Susan. As you can guess, Susan gets off to a rocky start with the new neighbors by putting her foot in her mouth and inadvertently insulting them right away.
Cherry says he is basing the characters on neighbors that he has had in the past. As for what he has planned for the new couple, Cherry only said, "I just decided to have them move onto the street and have as many issues as any other couple. "
As for who will play the new couple, Cherry said, "We just started writing the episodes so I probably won't start casting for another few weeks." This is sure to be a much debated topic, especially since gay couples are rare on television comedies.
This new couple isn't the only pair to beautify the neighborhood as Dana Delaney and Nathan Fillion will also be moving onto Wisteria Lane.
Hopefully the new residents will be able to invigorate DH with some much needed excitement after the season spent writing around the pregnancy of Marcia Cross and the obvious reunion of Mike & Susan.

i hope that he doesn't opt for the negative cliches that he has been done with previous gay characters on the show. They should be smartly written. Is Nicolette sheridan out then?

Of course they'll be male. Wisteria Lane is really getting full...I hope no sharks move in.

Just to clarify my 'of course' delaration: TV stereotypes place gays on shows like Desperate Housewives, and lesbians on shows like Home Improvement.

Has ABC confirmed that this will be the last season for DH? I assume that's why they cast Nathan Fillion...

Ha Ha re: casting Nathan Fillion!
But seriously, Dana Delaney and Nathan Fillion should be a yummy couple. And I hope they make Mike & Susan interesting as a couple, instead of continuing to take the easy way out by throwing up annoying roadblocks to their happiness.
