Good Morning America host Robin Roberts announced this morning that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She'll have surgery on Friday to have a lump removed. She found the lump on the same day she was reporting on the death of a colleague, movie critic Joel Siegel, who died of colon cancer.Roberts says her doctor believes they caught her breast cancer early. She said, "...my doctor expects me to be flying planes and hanging on to submarines in the middle of the Atlantic and scaling the Mayan pyramids in no time." She also wrote about her diagnosis on ABC's blog.
Roberts is 46 and does not have any family history of breast cancer.

I don't watch GMA, but I too was a fan of hers when she was on ESPN. She always seemed a consummate professional.
Here's hoping that they did catch it early enough and her prognosis is favorable.

Robin,
I've been watching you for years on Good Morning America. I feel like I know you well, so when I heard the news today I felt so bad for you. I'm glad you caught this early, though. You're a tough cookie. You'll be just fine. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Robin, Aline and I have been watching you as long as you have been on television. It was my pleasure to know your father and your mother. For 22 years I was the superintendent of schools for the Clinton (Mississilppi) School District, and I attended meetings with them for several years. As you know, your father was very active in the Mississippi School Boards Association and your mother was one of the first members of the State Board of Education of Mississippi. We know that they taught you how to deal with adversity with faith, strength, and tenacity. We have you on our prayer list and look forward to seeing you on GMA for many years to come.

I cannot figure out how to write directly to Robin, so i am posting a note to this blog in the hopes that she will see it. If I could speak to Robin I would ask her to PLEASE read the book called "Beating Cancer with Nutrition" by Patrick Quillin, PhD, RD, CNS before she undergoes chemotherapy/radiation. I am almost finished reading this book, and based on the information in it, and other research I have done, there is no doubt that if I developed cancer, I would absolutely follow the advice of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, of which Dr. Quillen is Director of Nutrition. I would never undergo chemotherapy or radiation WITHOUT the additional benefit of the correct nutrition to protect all of my good cells from the treatments, and help the chemo/radiation to only destroy the cancer cells. I would implore anyone with cancer or anyone without cancer to read this book in order to understand the importance of how nutrition plays a huge role in why we develop cancer in our bodies, and how it can help to reverse cancer cells once they have developed. I hope that one day, in this world where cancer seems like an epidemic, that this information will be made more readily available to everyone, so that so many people will not have to die from this horrible condition.
