(S02E08) Even though last week's episode of Kyle XY wasn't filled with mysteries and XX/XY mythology, it did leave us with a few questions and expectations: who was Lori's attacker, will Kyle really reveal everything to Declan, etc. Lucky for us, this week's episode gave us the answers. "What's the Frequency, Kyle?" was a good episode that offered us answers, developed characters more, and gave us a bit more to chew on when Madacorp is concerned.
XX, the human
This week's episode was XX heavy, which is not a bad thing since we needed to learn more about her eventually. Nicole finally made a breakthrough with Jessi and was able to get a few revelations from the teen. The biggest was of course the fact that Jessi is afraid of Emily. This set Nicole on a path to protect Jessi which led to a confrontation between the two adults. This face off was important as it had Emily want to resign from Madacorp (more on that later). As some people expected, Jessi is the one who attacked Lori at the end of last week's episode. This event, added to what Lori told Jessi about it being a crime, mixed with the session with Nicole at the beginning of the episode, set Jessi on a self-discovery path. Thanks to an ability we had not seen XY use, XX is able to imitate pen pattern and rewrite Nicole's notes. There is a reason Nicole hadn't told Jessi about this yet, she knew the teen needed to do more introspection and have more session first (and maybe Nicole would have never told Jessi about those but would have used psychology to help Jessi fix that without knowing). The truth hurt. Jessi now knows that she lacks empathy, shows no remorse and is socially manipulative. She did try to show some empathy when asking Declan what was wrong and she returned the pendant, but there is no way she can fix those flaws on her own. Will Madacorp's magic wand fix that?
Ballantine, the puppet master
We all new Ballantine was the enemy, the evil one. But this week's episode showed that he is an emotionless person who doesn't care for his employee. Does he even have a family? What would he do if someone took his children away like he did with Emily's daughter (he did return her but he showed he was willing to kidnap her to ensure Emily would comply). Ballantine will eventually have to accept and admit that XX is more than a project, more than a "computer program." He doesn't know yet that his first programming of XX (when he gave her a past) didn't fully work as she recalled the events that occurred in the woods. Will the reboot screw her more? Or will she magically be cured? (I doubt she'll be 100% cure but I expect her to be feeling better for a while.) For sure, he can't erase everything and give her a new life as he still needs her to get close to Kyle and everyone would be way too suspicious if Jessi 2.0 returned instead of Jessi 1.0.
Am I the only one who thought Foss had taken Page? I'm still positive that she is Foss' daughter. I was thinking that while being away from Kyle he took a peek at what his (ex-)family was up to, thought that his daughter may be in danger and decided to take her away for safety reasons.
Now that Emily was ordered to focus on Stephen, do you think she'll try to seduce him in order to get closer to Kyle?
Declan, the friend
Declan is definitely going back to his old self, the self I prefer. He stopped moping and is friends with Lori and Kyle again. I would have liked to see his reaction when Kyle told him everything but at least the writers included a scene where we learned Kyle did tell him everything. Kyle needed to have Declan back as a friend as he knows he can not only confide in him but also get the needed help with no questions asked when the time comes. It was great to see Declan and Lori make amends and become friends once again. Declan can be a good friend. It was sweet how he rented chick flicks for Lori and asked her to sing the song he missed (remember he was busy with Jessi at the time).
Now that he knows everything about Kyle, will Declan see the similarities between his friend and Jessi? If he doesn't make the connection, for sure he'll ask questions when he notices Jessi has no bellybutton.
The Tragers, the family
The Tragers are one of the coolest family on TV right now. They are fun, hip, and always there for one another. This week, however, showed us that not all is great in the Tragers family, or should we say between Stephen and his father. Again, a somewhat traumatic event triggers the apparition of another of Kyle's ability. This time, he connects with Stephen's father, who is in a coma, and sees images that will eventually have him find a letter Stephen wrote to his father. This traumatic event helped the family bond and gave us another glimpse at whom the Tragers are. Stephen's father was a religious man while Stephen is more scientific. The attack on Lori also showed us how caring the family is: Stephen slept in her room, Josh was easy on her, etc.Kyle and Amanda, the couple
How sweet was the first kiss scene? I'll repeat it again but Amanda and Kyle are really cute together. They both support one another and accept the other as s/he is, no questions asked. I do hope that they make it through without too many obstacles.Other scenes of interest
- Stephen telling Kyle he is happy he is living with them.
- Stephen making amends with his father.
- Josh trying to find something nasty to tell his sister at the end of the episode.
- Appearances can be deceiving. - Nicole to Jessi
- Just when I'm ready to cross "alien" off my list, you pull another stun and suck me back in. - Josh to Kyle
- She's a computer with a glitch. Bring her in, we'll fix her. - Ballantine to Emily.
- Tomorrow is a clean slate. - Emily to Jessi
- "He said to tell you that Madacorp always has your family in mind." - Emily's mother to Emily
- As if you have a self-editing bone in your body. - Lori to Josh

David, it's on several times a week, check ABC Family's website for the times--I think it's midnight Tuesday and Saturday (the first hour of Wednesday/Sunday).

I have enjoyed, "Kyle XY" since episode 1 (and I consider myself lucky to have noticed episode 1 was on last June), but I'm starting to wonder how much longer this show will hold my attention. While watching this week's episode with a friend, I predicted every outcome, from Jessi being the attacker to the letter being in the bible to the Madacorp abduction of Emily's daughter. Between the teenage angst writing and the predictable, unoriginal plots of the last few weeks, I'm starting to lose interest.
If last week's discussion on TVSquad about 13 episodes vs. 22 episodes is true, then maybe I'm just a victim of the 9 filler episodes and things will get better when the filler episodes go away and we go back to the main storyline.

Yeah, I really hate it when Declan is mopping. He gets water everywhere.

I think the the Trager family is awful, trite and paperdoll copies of how real people behave. The sweetness factor makes me gag.
I was glad that Foss was not the one who harmed Lori and I still do not belive Emily or Paige are related to him. Nick Lea a grandfather? God forbid.
I FF thru the show after I TIVO it and still watch way too much of it looking for Foss.
Does Klye understand he is a machine at heart or does he think he is a human clone?
Let's hope the show ends without his memory being erased.

I love the "sweetness" of this show but agree that the Tragers are more like automatons than Kyle is.
I'm a child and family therapist and the mother of two teenagers and I can tell you that the portrayal of the real life in which teenagers live and interact in general and with their families is no where in this show.
I love it, though, as escapism and for the message of hope that we can all be better people. The juxtapositon of Kyle's 'goodness' and Madacorp's 'evil' are classic and I hope they don't go too far down the line of pursuing those as absolutes/cliches.

Josh: TV.com lists the following songs as being played in the episode. I don't know which one is the one played during the kiss but at least it narrows your search down:
Wrap It Up - Whitey
Ships - New Ruins
Ride - Cary Brothers
Dragonfly - M Craft
Fly Straight - Aidan Hawken
