Who's the King of Comic-Con? Kevin Smith or Joss Whedon? Kevin may have pulled ahead with this afternoon's Heroes announcement, but Joss' fans come bearing gifts. Seriously. At least half the people asking questions had gifts to lay at the master's feet. Fortunately for us, Joss came equipped with a gift or two himself.
If you don't want one Buffy Season 8 spoiler, don't follow the jump.
Here are the answers to Joss' self-posed question, "What have you done for me lately?":
- Joss and former Buffy scribe Drew Goddard have written a horror script together called A Cabin in the Woods. It is quote the "horror film to end all horror films." I hope so. Joss has professed his disdain for torture porn. Here's hoping their flick moves the genre in a new, more interesting direction.
- The Buffy Season 8 comic continues, and he is already plotting a Season 9. And, guess what, kids? Oz is coming back. He wouldn't say how or when, but he did say bet on it.
- The most exciting news of all: Ripper is in effect! Ripper is the long-discussed story of Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) pre-Buffy. Who knows whether or not this plot will stay the same, but Head is on board as is the BBC, which is planning to film the story as one 90 minute TV movie.
- Joss has a new online comic called Sugarshock available at Dark Horse's MySpace site. It has nothing to do with Buffy, Angel or Firefly. Completely new material. This is just the first of what Joss referred to as his smaller, under the radar projects that we'll be seeing more of in the coming months.
- He's is finishing the score for a short film he'll be directing called The Serving Girl. It is going to be a short ballet starring Summer "River" Glau. Yes, a Joss Whedon BALLET!
- Other Joss bits: Something will happen with Fray. He's still working on Goners - doing studio rewrites. The Angel "After the Fall" comic will be a maxi-series. 12 issues that depict what happened after Sesaon 5's finale. And, Serenity's collector's edition DVD will debut on August 21st.
How's that for a Whedon update? This uber-fan couldn't be more excited.

The Serenity news was really old, and is just stuff they included on the normal edition DVD in other areas of the world.
I'm not a huge Buffy fan but I do like the fact they can continue the stories somehow.

Yes and no. Sci Fi Inside: Serenity, the R. Tam Sessions and the new cast commentary have not previously appeared on any edition.

Sigh. I spent so much money getting Serenity when it first released on DVD and now it's dirt cheap. Well I'll do it again for the CE!
I'm excited about the ballet thing (Do you remember Glau in that one Angel episode? She was so good!). I am excited about the Angel comic books. And all the other stuff sounds cool too. I'm glad he's busy.

Oh so there is new stuff too? Well that's good. I never bought it the first time because I knew I SE would come out. I just thought it would be sooner.
Plus $20 for Serenity and no extras was way too much. I'm still gonig to wait until I can find the new edition for about $10.

As much as I would love more Angel, I don't think I would want to know what happened after the end of season 5. I thought the finale was brilliant, terribly sad but brilliant.
