It's official. You don't have to pay $800 to pick up a high definition TiVo. The new TiVo HD is available from TiVo's website for $299. All the details are pretty much what we had expected:
- Dual CableCards, located at the front
- M-Card support for tuning two channels with one card
- Support for analog cable (standard definition) and ATSC over the air high definition recording
- No OLED front display
- No THX certification
- Comes with the standard Series2 remote control, not the Series3 remote
- 160GB hard drive for recording 180 hours of standard def or 20 hours of high def programming

I just hope the eSATA enabling hack works on the Tivo HD like it does on the Series3. I've got a 500GB eSATA drive sitting idle with Tivo HD written all over it.

No satellite support of any kind.
I have three series-2 boxes. I just bought 2 new HDTVs. I have no option of staying with Tivo, given that only satellite is available in my area.
Is Tivo really writing off all of the revenue from it's satellite customers? As we move to HD, leaving Tivo is the only option (unless I'm missing something....) Glad I'm not an investor!

If Tivo had their choice they would still be selling an HD Tivo for DirectTV. DirectTV got greedy and cut Tivo out of the loop. The problem is that the FCC gave the satellite providers a temporary waiver which doesn't require them to open up their technology to 3rd party vendors. The intent was to allow them to develop their technology to compete with cable. The cable companies on the other hand are required to support CableCard. Tivo's only hope to get back in with satellite is through patent litigation. Even if Dish network loses their current appeal, I doubt they will ever offer to sell a Tivo based DVR because of all of the bad blood between the companies.
