Henson Studios denies rumors about a new Muppet Show

muppetsThere have been a lot of Muppet projects in and out of development over the last couple years or so. Some came to fruition, some never quite made it, and others still remain in limbo.

There has been talk for awhile now about the possibility of a brand new, primetime Muppet series, a rumor TV Guide recently perpetuated, although Jim Henson Studios denies such a project exists. Citing an inside source, TV Guide writes that the new series would use modern technology to allow the Muppets to actually get up and walk around.

I'm a Muppet fan, and any news of a new Muppet project is interesting to me, but recreating the variety show format of the original Muppet Show with modern filming techniques feels an awful lot like what George Lucas did with the Star Wars prequels: yes, Yoda could now get up and move around in a way he couldn't in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, but did it really improve the character? I understand the Muppets would still be puppets and not CGI, my point is that artisans should be careful not to utilize new technology just because it's available. If it doesn't improve the story or the characters, then it's superfluous.
