Looking at the Emmy nominations announced this morning, one word comes to mind: BORING.
Or maybe two words, if you add "safe." I mean, come on. I don't usually watch Friday Night Lights, Dexter, or Battlestar Galactica, but even I know that those shows should have been nominated for something (beyond technical and writing awards). Instead we get...Tony Shalhoub again? He's fine, but there has to be someone else who they can plug in there. Grey's Anatomy and House for Best Drama? That's not to say that the shows nominated aren't good and solid, but when you take a look at the dramas that were left out...gah.
Beyond the major nominations (Best Comedy, Best Drama, Lead Actor and Actress, etc), there are other nominations where a lot of your favorite shows actually show up. After the jump, I'll highlight several.
I mentioned in the liveblog this morning that Studio 60 wasn't nominated. But it was! It got noms for Outstanding Cast, Cinematography, Direction, and Eli Wallach got an Outstanding Guest nomination for his role as the old TV writer who came back to the studio.
Were you aware that Standoff got a nomination? It's true! For Outstanding Main Titles, along with Dexter, Hustle, Ugly Betty, The Path To 9/11 and The Lost Room.
On The Lot got a nom too, for Outstanding Main Title Theme, along with The Tudors, 30 Rock, Hustle, and Dexter.
For Best Mini-Series, the nominees are The Starter Wife, Broken Trail, and Prime Suspect: The Final Act.
There's a category called Outstanding Music and Lyrics, and "Dick in a Box" was nominated! Wouldn't it be great to see those guys accept the award wearing boxes? The other nominees are songs from Scrubs (two noms), MadTV, and Family Guy.
Jon Stewart got a nomination for Outstanding Individual Performance In A Variety or Music Program, along with David Letterman, Ellen DeGeneres, Tony Bennett, and Stephen Colbert.
Here are the nominees for Supporting Actor in a Comedy: Kevin Dillon and Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Rainn Wilson (The Office), Neil Patrick Harris (HIMYM), and Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men). Supporting Actress in a Comedy: Jaime Pressly (My Name Is Earl), Jenna Fischer (The Office), Conchata Ferrell and Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men), Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds), and Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty).
For Supporting Actor in a Drama, it's William Shatner (Boston Legal), T.R. Knight (Grey's Anatomy - take that Isaiah Washington!), Masi Oka (Heroes), Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson (Lost), and Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos). Supporting Actress in a Drama: Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters), Chandra Wilson, Katherine Heigl and Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy), Lorraine Bracco and Aida Turturro (The Sopranos). I wonder why these categories aren't mentioned during the nomination announcements on TV.
Weirdest nominations: Dancing with the Stars, for Outstanding Make-Up (Non-Prosthetic) in this season's episode 3 (?). Shouldn't Heather Mills get a nomination for something? Inside The Actor's Studio gets a nom for Outstanding Non-Fiction Series?!
Here's a list of the major nominees, and here's a list of all the nominees, including the ones I talked about above.

Why does Ugly Betty get a nomination for Best Comedy when the format is a one hour drama (telenovela, which is a soap opera, which is a drama)?

So agree with you on boring. They've been this way for years. They nominate the same people and shows over and over. Same with the Oscars. Same movie gets a nomination in every category. I just don't believe that one show or movie can compete in every category, while another show can't get one nomination. They focus on one group and to hell with the rest.
No Battlestar Gallactica is ridiculous. They always determine certain programming to be beneath nominations even if they are clearly superior shows (Veronica Mars & Buffy come to mind). And, that's why I no longer watch. Fuck 'em.

I was a part of 5 emmy submissions and didn't get nominated either, those other shows shouldn't take it personally.

The Emmys are an industry joke. They are so out of touch with reality, it's sad. Most awards in major performance categories go to the people with the highest profiles -- the movie stars who now do TV, or the ones who have won awards so many times before that they're put on the list out of sheer name recognition. There are a handful of worthy nominees each year, but not much more than the stopped-clock-is-right-twice-a-day theory. And even fewer of those nominees actually win. So what are they winning? An award that does not represent the highest achievement in television, in terms of quality, recognition by peers, or ratings. In a way, I guess they're a lot like the Golden Globes.

What a steaming load of crap the Emmys have become!
I realize they probably didn't nominate anyone from "Studio 60" because they were afraid Bradley Whitford would pull a Judd Hirsch (Hirsch bashed the network for pulling the plug on "Taxi" in his acceptance speech the year after "Taxi" was cancelled), but...
Not including "DEXTER" is a crime! Michael C. Hall was stunning last year in this breakout performance. What a compelling show that the Academy completely overlooked.
"Battlestar Galactica" is also a standout show that gets overlooked constantly because of the stigma that sci-fi has in the Academy of being a hack genre. Sci-fi shows only normally get effects nods, but Galactica deserves so much more because of the absolutely stellar ensemble and its high-quality dark drama.
"Heroes" (although it deserves every award it gets) only probably squeaked in because it takes a more reality-based approach to sci-fi (and because it's a more high-profile network show).
"Boston Legal"???? Give me a damn break! Nowhere near the quality of any of the above-mentioned shows.
Other thoughts:
* Instead of nominating Bill Shatner for Best Supporting Actor - Drama, what about Gerald MacRaney in "Jericho"????
* No Kyle Chandler in "Friday Night Lights" for Best Actor - Drama? What?????

Let's be honest here. The Emmys are always a joke. To praise the likes of Boston Legal, Two and a Half Men and Grey's Anatomy while COMPLETELY ignoring The Wire and Battlestar Galactica is just silly.

Any television awards show which has never nominated The Wire once for an award is deeply flawed. I know people get sick of hearing it, but considering how highly praised it is, it's extremely unusual and actually serves to validate the whole theme of the series.

I wish BSG would get more nominations, as well. Mary McDonnell and Edward James Olmos have been giving Emmy-caliber performances since the beginning. However, the fact that two of BSG's four nominations are in categories that will be shown during prime time is a step up. Exodus, Part 2 really was a stand-out episode and Felix Alcala is very deserving. Moreover, Ronald D. Moore should have been receive nominations for this show long ago -- all the writers should. But you take what you can get. This wasn't BSG's strongest season, so these nominations are a happy surprise.

The problem with the Emmys as opposed to the Oscars is most voters can catch up on movies enough that a semi-respectable group can come out of it. With the Emmys there are way to many shows for their voters to actively watch. Therefore they need a qualifier. Have voters name the shows that they watch and only allow them to vote for their favorite programs among the shows they watch. Have people rank their 5 favorites from among those that they WATCH. Then come up with a fair weighted voted scheme so the shows with fewer viewers and less hype have more of a chance to be nominated. I think someone should make that work, ask the folks down at IMDB as to how they come up with their Top 250, it seems to be a balance of rating and # of votes.

Supporting Actor in a Comedy is the category to watch, damn that list is chock full of talent. Two of Entourage's best (Piven and Dillon), Rainn Wilson, and Neil Patrick Harris! Personally, as much as I love Entourage and The Office, I'm putting for NPH. His character on How I Met Your Mother continually cracks me up. Barney Stinson walks that line of reality and surreality so well.

Okay, I'm mad about BSG, FNL and Dexter... but how could anyone honestly justify snubbing The Wire? Especially last season! It was the absolute best TV that has ever been created, in my opinion. The Emmy's are ridiculous and shouldn't be held in such high esteem any longer.

The Soprano's get this many nominations for what had to be its worst season ever. We all kept waiting for something to happen that never did. You can't tell me that this past season's stories were what made David Chase bring the show back because "they just had to be told"

Although some of these nominations are a joke, as long as Lost, Boston Legal, The Office, and Neil Patrick Harris win the awards over the likes of Two and a Half Men and Grey's Anatomy then i will forgive the oversights of not nominating FNL and BSG. But looking at the nominations, it's almost like they set up Two and a Half Brain Cells to win something this year.

The Emmys have lost it... I mean, they don't watch TV and guess their nominations based on big names & popularity!
I mean Boston Legal but not Lost ?? Yeah, right.

20 years from now people will look back and recognize The Wire, Battlestar Galactica, FNL and Dexter as brilliant shows, not Grey's Anatomy, Heroes or Boston Legal.
Dexter's first 2 episodes of season 2 just got leaked on the internet....and wow that show is BRILLIANT.
But nothing beats The Wire. Anyone who has seen the show knows that it is perhaps the greatest TV show they have ever seen.

Where is "Scrubs" as best comedy? That show is hilarious!
What is up with Charlie Sheen getting nominated as Best Actor in a Comedy Series and Zach Braff not getting nominated? Charlie Sheen is not funny! How can 2 1/2 Men get nominated as best comedy and not Scrubs? Who watches that show?
The entire cast of Scrubs is hilarious! I can't believe they didn't get nominated.
Same thing with "My Name is Earl". Hilarious show, didn't get nominated!
Just ridiculous!
Who picks these things?
Sheesh!
