That sound you hear is the planet dying, just a little bit.
The syndicated talk shows (and I use that term very, very loosely) Jerry Springer and Maury have been renewed through the 2010 season. Yes, that's right, for three more seasons. Springer will start its 17th season this fall and Maury its 10th.
That means we'll have three more glorious seasons of actors ordinary citizens throwing chairs at each other and wrestling and three more intriguing years of morons ordinary citizens taking paternity tests to see if they're the father of a woman's baby.
I hope you're proud of yourselves watching these shows, because that's why they keep getting renewed. There are actually people in this world who watch these shows. I'm related to a few of them. And that makes me sad, every single day of the year.

i swear, i thought springer was canceled a few years ago. i live a few minutes from the studio and actually went to an (unaired) episode during college. it was so terrible they just decided to have the women flash the audience just to placate the masses. they film 7 episodes a week and only air 5. so just know, the episodes you watch on tv are atleast better than 25% of episodes they film.
and everyone should listen to the this american life about jerry springer. very interesting.

How could you honestly think that the people on Springer are actors? I've said this before and I'll say it again, but unless Mr. Springer is somehow able to tap into the biggest source of undiscovered talent the world has ever seen, those people are not actors. Where else are all of these actors that nobody has ever heard of coming from?
The guests on Springer are coached to not hold back, and express whatever they want. If they feel angry, act angry. But they're not actors.

I was on a couple talk shows a long time ago, and we were coached and the audience was whipped up into a frenzy ahead of taping. It was pretty crazy and I'm glad both of the talk shows were cancelled not long after. They treated the guests like freakshows and the audience like attack dogs. But anyway. . .
I wish MoPo would stop doing a million paternity test shows. I'm real tired of watching the girls run off the stage and Maury telling them they are sooo brave. :P He needs to get back to basics and mix it up with real issues like Montell. Maury's in a rut and I end up watching Oprah.

I had no idea Springer was still on the air. Ah, the joys of not having a TV available at work.

The thing about Maury that continues to surprise me is when the same guests keep returning for paternity tests. The nets should just wrap up all the talk shows together and make an after-show called Object of My Infection...

There isn't an actor/actress alive good enough to play the part of those losers on Springer. Sadly, they are the real thing.
