As most people know, there is very little about being an alcoholic or a drug addict that is funny. For most people who suffer from addiction the best they can hope for is to live "one day at a time" and do their best not to screw up their life and those around them. However, in the world of TV comedy, the addict is often the funniest person on the show. Many characters throughout TV history have given us all a belly laugh while they were under the influence. Here is my list of the funniest of those with this particular problem.
1. Jim Ignatowski (Christopher Lloyd) - Taxi
What could make a young Ivy League undergrad from a rich, influential family become a burned out reverend/cabbie with questionable judgment and a terrible memory? I doubt that even Jim could compile a complete list? At least his driving isn't any less safe than most New York cabbies.
2. Otis Campbell (Hal Smith) - The Andy Griffith Show
If only all drunks could be counted on to walk themselves into a police station and sleep off the night's festivities, the world would be a much better place for us and them.
3. Barney Gumble & Otto Mann (Dan Castellenata & Harry Shearer) - The Simpsons
What is more disconcerting? A stoned bus driver in charge of the lives of young children or a blackout drunk driving four hours to New York City?
4. Dr. Johnny Fever (Howard Hesseman) - WKRP in Cincinnati
When you're entire life exists in the middle of rock and roll culture it's difficult not to imbibe. Although it must be great not to have to shave ever.
5. Foster Brooks & Dean Martin - The Dean Martin Show
All the biographies say that their drunkenness was an act. I suppose that's what Lindsey Lohan's biography will say as well.
6. Manny the Hippie - The Late Show with David Letterman
Although his fame was short-lived, I was a huge fan. Never have I seen someone so unabashedly proud of their burned out, skeevy, conning persona.
7. Nigel Wick (Craig Ferguson) - The Drew Carey Show
I always wondered why he was such a terrible boss. Eventually we found out why. You'd have to be "chasing the dragon" to continue to employ Drew and Mimi.
8. Larry Finkelstein (Alan Rachins) - Dharma & Greg
How the tight ass from LA Law became burned out Dharma's dad I'll never know. Even as the series started to get lame, Larry always made me laugh.
9. John Hemingway (John Larroquette) - The John Larroquette Show
The best part of Hemingway was that even though he was a recovering alcoholic, he was still paying for the mistakes he made while drinking.
10. Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan - 30 Rock
I'm not exactly sure what Dr. Spaceman has prescribed for Tracy but whatever it is, it makes him funny for the first time in his life.

The episode where Johnny Fever and Venus take the sobriety tests on air was classic! Johnny's response time actually got quicker the more he drank!!

Hello? Where's Karen Walker from Will & Grace? How could you have a list about substance abuse and not have her on it? She didn't even crack the top ten? I mean seriously you list people who are drinkers and people who are addicts but Karen Walker, who embraced both vices and had never varied from her habits doesn't get mentioned?

I demand Mason from Dead Like Me. His substance abuse was outrageously funny.

How about Julian from Trailer Park Boys. The guy carries a rum and coke where ever he goes! I guess since it's a Canadian show it doesn't get the respect it deserves.

Aside from the from Iggy on Taxi, no show has ever done this better than Absolutely Fabulous?
Of course, if we're including Brit TV, then a nod must be made to Dylan Moran (both for Black Books and for his stand up).
And good call by Spicy for adding Karen Walker to the discussion.

Sorry Dr. Funbags. The "Dear John" group was for people who are divorced. Who would've thought Harry Groener could go from geeky guy on this show to a cool character on Buffy and then pretty darn funny as the chef on Las Vegas.

How about Anthony LaPaglia as Simon Moon, Daphne's brother on Fraiser. He was funny enough to get an Emmy.

Uhh Nigel Wick!! That whole story line where Mimi kept him in her apartment was one of the highpoints of the series..
Other then that sometimes i actuly see myself drinking with Barney Gumble and the rest of the gang, becaus some of the bars i go to here in Denmark could really double as Moe's if they would ever make a live-action movie! :D

this list just wouldn't be complete without the addition of
Christine Baranski's scene stealing Maryann Thorpe on Cybill.
(I hope Cybill herself doesn't see this posting)
