Big Brother 8: Episode 4

Amber and Carol in the hotseat.

(S08E04) Carol, the walking Ambien prescription, always seemed like a strange candidate to be on a reality show. Especially a show like Big Brother that is so dependent on interesting personalities to keep the viewing audience engaged

Four full episodes have aired, and I can't think of a single memorable thing she did the entire time she was there. I've seen cloud formations that have captured my attention more effectively, and that's taking into account the fact that Carol was one of the more attractive girls in the house.

I can't think of a single time she showed any real passion for being on the show, and her attempts at campaigning to not be voted off seemed halfhearted at best.

Which is why I was glad that practically the entire house decided it was time for her to leave.

The vote ended up being split 10 to 1 and judging by the chatter leading up to the elimination, Jeneric was probably the only person who cast a vote in Carol's favor.

I was actually pretty surprised it played out this way. As one of the house guests pointed out, Carol seemed like a much weaker player than Amber which makes her a better candidate to keep around in these early days of the competition.

I think Amber is dangerous for three reasons:

For starters, she's by far the most sympathetic tenant in the house. She's a single mother who takes care of 5-6 people in her home, and she's doing this all on a waitresses wages. That's a tough story to beat on its own.

Secondly, it seems as though she's already aligned herself with Dustin who appears to be one of the stronger players in the house. Carol didn't have a single strategic alliance that I can recall.

Most importantly, there's no telling what types of exotic animals Amber is harboring in that mountain of hair on top of her head. It could be a cobra, it could be a turtledove with avian flu. Either way, it will probably equate to death. Why risk your chance at half a million dollars? Why risk your life? They should have gotten rid of her when they had the chance.

Leading up to the eventual vote-off and the awkward interview of Carol by the Chenanator, we got to learn what the real issue is between Daniele and her dad.

The real reason for the drama between Daniele and Evil Dick, as explained by Dick's son, stemmed from the fact that Daniele borrowed some money from Dick and was unable to pay it back. Dick's son also pointed out that Dick didn't exactly handle the situation as well as he should have, so he equally at fault for the falling out.

Daniele's grandmother (Evil's mom) also let us know that Dick had Daniele when he was 22-years-old and that he didn't adjust to the life of a father all that well.

Through both of these stories, I failed to catch whatever happened to Dick's wife / Daniele's mom. I can only assume she's not in either of their lives any longer.

Julie Chen also grilled the three pairs of house guests who have unfinished business with one another, and we discovered that:

Dick is just plain happy to be talking to his daughter again even if it's on a purely superficial level. Daniele just finds it awkward to be doing all of this in front of strangers.

Joe likes Dustin's smile and Dustin thinks Joe has a winning personality. Basically, this is code speak for "we still want to claw each others eyes out and destroy one another's baby t-shirt collection."

Carol and Jessica pretended to be completely over whatever spat they had in 8th grade, but we understand they are still petty, catty, immature twenty-somethings with the conflict resolution skills of Rosie O'Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

Prior to the HOH competition we got a mini-expose on the life of America's player. Eric has been a student of the game for eight solid years which was probably going to make him a great tactician in the Big Brother house.

That's why his parents and friend let out an enormous moan of disbelief when they realized he was going to be America's player. They seem to be under the assumption that this will completely ruin his strategy that was eight years in the making.

I'm under the impression that Eric does not have to comply with all of America's collective suggestions since he gets $10,000 for every five tasks that he completes. Doesn't that mean he can opt out of America's choice if he doesn't think it aids his chances of moving forward in the game? I'm going to need to see the Big Brother rule book on this one.

Tonight, America is voting on who Eric campaigns for to have removed from the house.

HOH Competition - Majority Rules

This weeks HOH competition was of the question asking variety. The contestants were asked a question and they had to try and make their answer match what the majority of the other players chose as their answer.

This was probably one of the strangest and most poorly executed HOH competitions I've watched on the show. Julie Chen had to keep reminding the contestants to reveal their answers and there was a whole mess of awkward pauses and confusion on the part of the players.

The questions were:

  • In the butter me up comp who did the majority in the house want to rub the butter off of? Daniele or Jen? Majority said Daniele.
  • Who does the majority of the house say they'd not let their daughter go on a date with. Nick or Mike?
    Majority said Nick.
  • Who does the majority of the house say would cheat on a significant other? Dustin or Joe? Everyone picked Joe.
  • Who does the majority of the house say would hold a grudge the longest? Nick or Daniele? Majority said Daniele.
  • Who does the majority of the house say is the best person to cheer them up when they are depressed? Eric or Jessica? Majority said Eric.
  • Who is most likedly to turn $500 thousand into $500 million? Kail or Zach? Majority chose Zach.
  • Who would help an old lady cross the street? Jameka or Amber? Majority chose Amber.
The final question, which was stupidly tricky, came down to Dustin, Eric, Jen, and Joe. The question was:

How many gallons of water fit in this teacup?
  • How many gallons of water does the spinning teacup in the backyard hold?
Dustin guessed 200, Eric guessed 220, Jen guessed 41, and Joe guessed 136. The answer was nine thanks to the teacup's gaping entrance.

Any normal person would assume the question was referring to a fully intact teacup. At least I did, but maybe that makes me abnormal. I'm seriously doubting Jen took the entrance into consideration when she answered, but regardless, she ended up winning this week's HOH.

That actually works out splendidly for me because she will probably do something stupid which should make for some good writing material. I'm also interested in seeing how they dress up her HOH room.

My guess is it will be filled wall to wall with pictures of her face, which is no doubt her favorite thing on the planet.

At least that's what I'm hoping for because I'd love to see her on the floor in the fetal position, crying and screaming, "These pictures of me are so ugly! Is that a pimple?! Whyyyyyyyyyy?!?," and then stab herself with one of those Big Brother house keys. Preferably, Nick's key for dramatic effect.

Just the prospect of this happening has me giddy with excitement. I can't wait until Sunday.
