We haven't been reviewing America's Got Talent here at TV Squad this season. However, after watching last night's episode during which they selected the Top 20, I felt compelled to write about it. Why? Because I'm really disappointed. Actually, when I watched the show (especially near the very end), I had about the same facial reaction the "3 Redneck Tenors" had when they were told they wouldn't advance. So far this season, I didn't mind judges making questionable decisions at times since it didn't mean those contestants would be on the Top 20. However, last night, I expected them to make good decisions as the selected ones would have a 1 out of 20 chance to win a million. I get that the show wanted a wide variety of acts in the Top 20 and that it meant not all our favorites would be in the Top 20. I also understand that they needed a few acts that would have people talking. But the judges clearly lost it last night (well, in reality, a few weeks ago), when selecting the Top 20. I need someone give me answers these two questions as I have no idea what a good answer is for either:
- Is Boy Shakira really worth a million?
- Is Kashif really a good Bollywood dancer and entertainer? Because if he is in the Top 20, he must be right?
Actually, I wish that all AGT fans do watch and vote in the coming weeks. Boy Shakira and Kashif need to be booted off asap and it's only by not voting for them that we can show how disappointed we are in the judges decision. But then again, us watching and voting will give NBC ratings... it's a double-edge sword.
Edited on July 13 to add: The network just sent out a press release with the Top 20 contestant list.

I TOTALLY agree with you.. I was innocently watching the show and working out a tthe same time... .. I watched the tenors get nixed and at the very moment I thought " they better f'ing not allow boy shakira then either " ... So, when boy shakira came up, I figured he didn't have a chance in hell either if they weren't letting the tenors thru....
HOW can they allow an overweight transvestite with minimal talent thru when the 3 tenors are obviously in a totally different league of talent..
Okay..I can't figure it out either... I would sign a petition.. that was ridiculous.
I remember thinking " oh man those 3 are going to flip out if boy shakira goes thru" would have loved to be a fly on the wall when they heard that one..

dan: I agree with you about wanting to be a fly on the wall to see the others' reactions. When Boy Shakira came to the stage to hear his fate, I was thinking that it would be a great addition if the show had shown footage of the other contestants' reactions to the announcement. Same for when Leonide and Rashif went on stage.

I have a Pakistani background and I am familiar with Bollywood movies (I hate them...to put it mildly).
Needless to say I am shocked that Kashif has gone through to the last 20...the guy's dancing absolutely sucks...if you have ever seen a Bollywood movie you would see that they are more high-octane and dynamic than what Kashif does.
I don't recommend watching one though.

Hi Isabelle..
So I wasn't the only who sat up and said "OMG, what were the reactions of the rejected contestants doing the moment they heard about boy shakira".
I put down the barbells and hit rewind on the dvr and replayed it for a moment..because I "thought" i heard them say you are thru to the top 20... and I thought ..you haved GOT to be kidding me... this makes me believe that the whole thing is about controversy and ratings, and not actual talent. It was like they voted thru their very own 'sanjaya'...
As for the Bollywood - I did think ...hmm "we" might think he is good..but what would someone who grew up in that culture think... "Great" to us , might be " god awful" to them.
Oh..and Isabelle thank yo ufor the follow up comment. I read about only 6 blogs a day, but no one ever comments back - this is the first time I've commented on here..and it was a pleasant surprise to hear back from the chief blogger in charge ..
You should know this comes from someone who grew up on all the ABCS of television - from the Flintsones to the Jetsons and Bugs Bunny to the Simpsons - a solid foundation, I am sure you would agree ...now if they would only take off saturday morning golf and bible preaching and put Wild E Coyote and the Runrunner Hour back on... life would be serene again...LOL

dan: I try to comment when I can and when I think I have a comment that'll be useful. Of course, I can't (nor can the other bloggers) respond to everyone.
Now that you mention it, I do recall my brain going "Sanjaya all over again" when seeing Boy Shakira and Rashif move on. For sure, they wanted to create a stir and controversy. I wonder if the people behind the show ordered the judges to let them go through... Then again, Shannon and Pierce have been rooting for those two from the start... Who knows?

I guess when it all boils down ..it is a business like anything else. I think we all forget sometimes while we're watching the flickering box or our high def non flickering box.... that this is all a business.
Okay, so I guess we need some non-profit reality shows so that the "actual" talent comes forward...then the only controversy we'll hear about is which judges got paid off....LOL
tu parles francais, aussi ?

See, my biggest problem is that Piers himself said, on the premiere IIRC, that too many mediocre acts are going through. Yet Boy Shakira and Sharif are in the semifinals. (I tried to give Sharif's dancing a chance, but I couldn't even force myself to say it was any good.)
That, and Boy Shakira needs serious professional help. I once knew someone who had that kind of delusional fantasy. I'd be humiliated if I were even remotely related to him.
So I left a nasty comment on the show's page, not expecting anyone in charge to read it.

I agree with what you have written Isabelle. Some good acts didn't in get over some very questionable novelty acts. Being the best didn't seem to have anything to do with being in the TOP 20.
By the way anybody notice the fine print at the end of the show that the Million Dollar Prize is an annunity paid out over 40 years. Hmmm!

Jeff: I noticed that fine print this week and I thought it was silly to spread it out over 40 years! As if the show doesn't bring enough money to have them pay it in a year (or 3 tops!). I wonder if contestants noticed that too.

For some reason, my wife just knew that they would let Boy Shakira and Kashif through. The judges mentioned at some point that they were unsure if the magic in the room would transfer across the TV screen. Clearly, it is did not. Hindsight, I would hope they would have made a different decision.
As an avid Idol watcher, you will often hear the judges recant something on Wednesday night after watching the broadcast. I'd like to hope that the AGT judges might also.
IMHO, we could have had more than 1 magician. The whip/lasso guy is not a million dollar talent, and the same can be said for the stilts.
The Redneck tenors were robbed, they are what the show is all about (check 'em out http://www.myspace.com/3rednecktenors | http://www.3rednecktenors.com/).
As for the million dollars, if you catch the fine print at the end of the broadcast, it is an annuity that will be worth $1 million in 40 years. I'm not the greatest mathematician, but I know that is no where near a legitimate million.

This show this year is ridiculous! I was stunned at the poor choices, most mentioned above. What the He*l are they doing??????? I get the need for variety but that Shakira guy and Bollywood...barely dancing......guy over some people who clearly deserve a shot. It's crap! This seems so stacked and biased I do not think I will be watching any further. Sharon Osborne is way to lenient on the bad performers. I am very disapointed.
On to the next show.

I can't help but remembering last season when the show picked the initial competitors at the auditions and then ten acts went on each week for five weeks and two were chosen, one by the judges and one by the viewers. That system would probably have seen the Red Neck Tenors and my personal favourite (the music teacher who had the picture of his grandmother) going through to the finals. I suppose there's a belief that Americans don't respond to classical music or anything close to it. Interestingly, in "Britain's Got Talent" in which Piers Morgan is a judge (along with Simon Cowell) the winner was a man who sang opera and auditioned singing "Nessun Dorma" from "Turandot".
The fact is that even Leonid the Magnificent has more talent in his costumes than Boy Shakira and Kashif combined, and don't even remind me of the magician who was rejected - both magicians deserved to go through. (And in my book if you leave the site of the competition before you're told whether or not you go through, you shouldn't be eligible to go through.)
The way the selections after the audition cycle have been handled this season have changed the show from something unique to another "American Idol"clone.

How is it that boy shakira and bollywood ripoff made it through when David said he wasn't going to let them through? He can't stand up to Piers and Sharon? Or were the producers involved, as I suspect, in this mess to create controversy? I can't believe those 2 made it through the 2nd round much less to the finals. What were Sharon and Piers smoking to think that was talent? Or was that sabatoge by the brits to make the American version look stupider than it was in the first place. The British version has an opera singer win. We have boy shakira. Ugh.

I have been reviewing AGT for another site and was also surprised that the Redneck Tenors and Anthony the magician didn't go through. I mean, everybody knows that these things are far, far away from any sort of reality and a singer will most likely win (for record sales, of course.)
Also, Leonid is actually quite talented. Did anyone else notice that we really didn't get to see his second act? He has performed professionally in Vegas. The producers really should have chosen him over Boy Shakira and Kashif Dynamite. Basically, I have a mad crush on Leonid. Yes, I have no life.

I was dumbfounded when I saw how the judges totally fumbled the final 20 selections. It seems that they tried to hide the fact that sax player and dancer Beal did not make it. Boy Shakira and Kasif in the finals. What a joke! You don't have enough room for me to comment on what I think of the judges. It was obvious, however that Hasslehoff totally disagreed in with some selections. In fact walked out on one of them. If I could influnece others by boycotting the show I would do it. Maybe I could Bill O'reiley on to it. I really don't think the judges are stupid, unless it is Piers. They seem to be driven by some invisible force to make the wrong selections. I feel sorry for the contestants that were dropped becaule they were not as good as Boy Shakira and Kasif. I hope that sax player Beal gets a chance to perform somewhere. I'll bet you could get him on the late or late late shows or some day time show. I was totally entertained by him.

I'm totally fine with their choices. To be honest, I have no clue what their criteria is or how they go about choosing any of them. What even happened to last years winner?
It isn't like American Idol at all where something comes of it, it just kind of ends. So the arguement that a singer will win because they can sell records makes no sense.
In fact, I don't think they should have so many singers make it to the final 20. That's what American Idol is for. I do really like the female beat-boxer and the reggae-ish guitar playing stay-at-home dad guy. The Redneck Tenors were good too.
That's another thing. Some of these acts are so good and seem so polished already why are they spending time on AGT?
I'm babbling so it's best I just shut-up at this point.

Boy Shakira and Kashif must have already been millionaires, and spent it all on buying the votes of the judges. That's the only possible way they could even have made it to the prelims. The judges would have to be complete idiots to have picked them for nothing. The only other possible answer is, they are relations of the judges, or the judges are being blackmailed. It has to be something. Nobody could be that stupid.
