Let me take a look at my trusty calendar. Okay, tomorrow I take the kids to the doctor. On Thursday I get that bikini wax. Friday? Well, I do the same think as I do every Friday -- try to take over the world (Snarf!). Now, for next week . . .
Sweet Niblets! Next week (July 19th, to be exact) they announce the nominees for the 59th Emmy awards to honor achievements for what has gone on previously rather than what is going on now. Which is opposite of the Golden Globes or the SAG awards, which honor achievements that are going on both presently and in the past. Wait, let me read that again . . . yep, that makes sense!
So, in preparation for the television wonk's biggest night of the year I have asked the humongous staff over here at TV Squad to give me a hand in picking out who will be the likely nominees and winners in the Best Actor/Actress/Drama/Comedy categories. Of course, your opinions may differ. But, hey, what fun would it be if we picked the same things you did?
Best Actor in a Comedy Series: Steve Carell (The Office), Jeremy Piven (Entourage), James Roday (Psych), Kevin James (King of Queens), Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
Best Comedy Actor Winner: I would pick Alec Baldwin as the winner. His performances during this freshman season of 30 Rock made the show. Whenever he was on screen you were guaranteed at least a laugh or two. Heck, his scenes with Will Arnett during the "Fireworks" episode are worthy of the Emmy nod right there.
Both Steve Carell and Jeremy Piven may be strong contenders as well. However, with the rocky seasons both of their shows had the award committee may want to look for some fresh faces. If that's the case then Psych's James Roday may be the dark horse in this contest.
Best Actress in a Comedy Series: America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine), Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls), Jenna Fischer (The Office)
Best Comedy Actress Winner: Ugly Betty's America Ferrera is going to take the triple crown of television awards, She has already won a Golden Globe and a SAG award and I think she'll be a favorite to win an Emmy. Although, if the award comes down to cuteness she'll have some competition against The Office's Jenna Fischer. I wouldn't be surprised if the Office producers submitted the monologue she gave during the "Beach Games" episode for a nomination bid.
The dark horse here? Lauren Graham of the dearly departed Gilmore Girls. She has yet to be nominated but may be given the nod this time around as a sentimental favorite. I would be okay if she won.
Best Comedy Series: The Office, Entourage, Psych, Ugly Betty, Scrubs
Comedy Series Winner: A tough call here. At first glance I'd say The Office would be the winner this year but, as mentioned previously, this past season was a bit wishy-washy. Same thing goes for Scrubs; however, our favorite medical comedy does have an advantage this year if they submitted the musical episode for consideration.
Ugly Betty? I don't know. Since there are many more serious elements to the show than normal comedies I don't know if they will appreciate the program as a whole as a winner. That leaves Entourage and Psych. Even though it didn't have one of its best seasons I'd go with Entourage as the winner, with Psych as the dark horse.
Best Actor in a Drama Series: Dennis Leary (Rescue Me), Michael Chiklis (The Shield), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Eddie Izzard (The Riches), Matthew Perry (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip).
Best Drama Actor Winner: I want Matthew Perry to win, even though he won't. Sure, the show that he was on was not the greatest, but his role on Studio 60 was excellent. So much so that you sometimes forgot that he played the wacky Chandler Bing on Friends.
I have a feeling that Dexter's Michael C. Hall will win in this category. Not only was he superb in the role but the show itself was the toast of the town last year. I feel that Dennis Leary and Michael Chiklis also have good chances of being nominated and perhaps winning the Emmy. I would hope that the show that the producers of The Shield submitted was the one where Chilkis' character (Vic Mackey) broke down in the middle of a hospital waiting room as the death of his friend and partner Lem finally overcame him. It was one of the most powerful scenes of this season.
The dark horse in all of this would be Eddie Izzard of The Riches. I think he did a terrific job mixing both comedy and drama into his role on the program.
Best Actress in a Drama Series: Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy), Minnie Driver (The Riches)
Best Drama Actress Winner: Hmm. Not Sandra Oh. I think that Grey's is not the powerhouse that it was in previous seasons. That, and there have been so many good dramas, and good drama actresses, that Oh may be overshadowed this year.
I think it's going to go to Kyra Sedgwick. The Closer has been steadily rising in popularity, and Sedgwick's character has become more familiar with the public. I also think that Minnie Driver from The Riches has a strong chance of winning the award. Dark horse this time around? Connie Britton of Friday Night Lights.
Best Drama Series: The Shield, Rescue Me, Dexter, 24, The Sopranos
Drama Series Winner: I really wanted to put Battlestar Galactica down as nominee and winner. I really did! However, there were so many good dramas on last season that I found it hard to include in my list. It wouldn't matter anyway because The Sopranos will win it hands down due to the sentimentality factor. And, if all of the members of the award committee get bonked on the head and forget that The Sopranos ever existed as a show, then Dexter will probably win.
So, there you have it, the nonsensical thoughts of who and what should be nominated for Emmy's this year. Now it's your turn to tell us who should be nominated and who will win.

24 gets a nod, but Kiefer doesn't? Also, Desperate Housewives seems to get nominations consistently, so, I expected a sprinkling throughout the list. Where's Lost? Did I see Gilmore Girls? Really? Oh well.

Did I miss something or was this past season of Lost just a dream?

I'm pretty sure I saw that Jenna Fischer, Sandra Oh, and Jeremy Piven are both in the Supporting Categories, and Gilmore Girls submitted in the Drama ones.
Besides that, I like some of your choices. I'd definitely love to see Scrubs/Office/Betty all up for Best Comedy, though 30 Rock needs to be in there as well, possibly even winning. I don't watch any of your Best Drama nominees though.
Finally, although you didn't include it here, I've gotta see Neil Patrick Harris nominated for Supporting Actor in a Comedy. It's already bad enough that HIMYM was screwed out of a Best Comedy nom, he needs to be nominated!

HOW COULD YOU leave out Kyle Chandler for Actor and Friday Night Lights for Drama!!! That would be a travesty. Best drama on tv...period!

Remember, folks, we don't know *any* of the nominees yet, so keep that in mind. We're just talking educated guesses at this point.
But, you're right. We should have included Kyle Chandler. And if Oh and Fischer are in the Supporting categories, then they're both in the wrong spots. Fischer is especially misplaced.
GG may have been submitted under drama this year to give the show a better chance of getting nominated. But I don't see how that makes sense, since there are many more quality dramas than there are comedies.

Uh, why are you nominating Lauren Graham in the "Comedy" part? Do dramadies normally get nominated as comedies or dramas? When I think of the excellent Gilmore Girls show, I don't associate it with anything like traditional sitcoms.

Oh, I see. The show can self-select? Then yeah, definitely self-select comedy, since the drama categories have way too many Emmy-worthy candidates.

I admire your wide-eyed optimism, but you have way too many cable-only nominations. It seems highly unlikely that shows like Pysch and The Riches are going to rake in multiple major category nominations. You omit Monk & Shalhoub, but they seem like a much more likely nomination pair from a USA or FX.
4 of your 5 best drama actors are from cable, yet you don't have the guaranteed slam dunk nomination of Gandolfini in the list....
Generally, the Emmys are about tradition and popularity with only a few new buzz grabbers crashing the party which seems like Heroes & Ugly Betty this year leaving behind Dexter, The Riches & Psych.

No love for Kyle Chandler or Friday Night Lights?!?
Chandler will get the nod over Matthew Perry...the crash and burn of Studio 60 will proably leave it shut out of most of the major categories.
Friday Night Lights gets the nod over Dexter in my book. And add to the fact that The Shield and Rescue Me didn't make the top ten, so they're out of the running.

I won't argue with your picks, because the Emmys are always a crapshoot anyway (both in noms and wins, hence the Mariska Hargitay wins), but I will say this: I'm pretty sure that Pinky of "Pinky & The Brain" fame said "narf," not "snarf," hence why I giggled every time they referred to Bryce Dallas Howard as a narf in "Lady in the Water."

No love for sci-fi?
Heroes has some excellent performances, I would nominate Jack Coleman and Hayden Panttierre for the actor's catagories, and put in Heroes as a whole for best drama. It's just a mindblowingly awesome show. I think it's better than Lost, and I've been a devoted Lost fan since day one.
And I know hardly anyone else watches this show, but... Supernatural. The two lead actors, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalacki, give extremely strong performances and are garunteed to break my heart at least once per episode. It's a fantastic show, and I think it really deserves some attention.

i LOVE that you put PSYCH on there for best series -- it should be nominated along with James Roday. If anyone wants to catch funny tv, they should watch the premiere on July 13th.
No Sally Field for Brothers and Sisters?

If Isaiah Washington doesn't get nominated for an EMMY, the Emmy Nominations have no credibility!

Anybody who says that Heroes should be nominated in almost any category is out of their mind. It is an fairly good show, but it is the combination of a variety of OK elements (OK directing, OK acting, OK writing, etc.) that are tied together fairly fantastically. So I guess Heroes deserves a nomination in Best Drama, but it better not win, and it really doesn't deserve a nomination in any other non-technical category.
Eddie Izzard was OK, but again, there were too many times where he just didn't pull off a particular scene that I can't really see him even nominated in a category. I was much more impressed by Minnie Driver, and I definitely think she deserves at least a nomination (but she really doesn't deserve the win).

Jasmine (#13), would that Emmy be for his performance as the aggrieved victim in what he claims is T.R. Knight's dastardly evil efforts to get him kicked off the show, and Shonda Rhimes's supposed racism? Poor, poor Isiah. Oh, wait--no one at all believes that performance.

Why do you say 'The Office' was wishy washy? I thought it was as funny as ever. That show deserves every Emmy it's nominated for!

I would like to see Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver be nominated for The Riches, as well as win. Minnie Driver has been overlooked as a great actress, and Eddie Izzard proved that he can do drama as well as comedy. I was very impressed.

Jensen Ackles is the best actor in the business. The fact that he isn't included among the nominees on this site tells me TVSquad doesn't know much about acting.

Best Actor in A Codmedy Series...The whole male cast of "The Class"! That show was great.
Best Actress in a Comedy Series..The whole female cast of "The Class"!
Best Comedy Series...You guessed it. "The Class!" Hands down best.
Best Actor in A Drama Series...Yes! Kyle Chandler lf "Friday Night Lights". Second Pick, Isaiah Washington of "Grey's". IF WASHINGTON ISN'T BACK NEXT YEAR, I DON'T WATCH GREY'S ANYMORE! HE SHOULDN'T BE FIRED 'CAUSE SOMEONE(S) DOESN'T LIKE WHAT HE SAYS!
Best Actress in a Drama Series...Connie Britton of "Friday Night Lights". She was fab.
