ABC Family doesn't get the kind of press that some of their edgier neighbors on the cable box enjoy, but I do appreciate that they make their own original programming, especially their penchant for casting Charisma Carpenter. They could have gone the easy route and given us endless reruns of Reba and Home Improvement. Tonight they kick off their latest entry, Greek. The dramedy (their description) is set at the fictitious Cyprus-Rhodes University and is said to follow the social minefield of the greek system.
I'm guessing a mix of those National Lampoon movies that go straight to DVD, minus the boobs, with a little Falcon Beach style drama added in for angst. It has potential. The show is produced by some ABC Family veterans that are also responsible for Wildfire, Kyle XY, The Division, and The Dead Zone.
If your summer viewing schedule has an opening and you are curious, more info is available at the show site, or the premiere episode is available for free on iTunes. Greek premieres tonight at 9PM.

Okay, pre-emptive disclaimer: what I'm criticizing here is the logical inconsistency, NOT the content of the show. No prude here. But...
This is a show whose "poster" shows a bunch of undergrads (most of whom wouldn't be drinking age) in a cup of beer. The trailer features lots of apparent drunkenness, a woman with her top off, a bar fight, and a man slamming another in the face with a wooden paddle.
And it's on what network?
ABC What now?

I think it's worth noting, as a fan of the Lonelygirl15 series, that the actress who plays the main character in that web series, Jessica Rose (http://www.lonelygirl15.com/lgpedia/index.php?title=Jessica_Lee_Rose),
will have a part on the show.
Just as I watched a TV movie put on by ABC Family partially because it featured two former Buffy cast members, I too have been interested in this show with one reason being the presence of an actress I am a big fan of.
So yeah, ABC Family is very good at appealing to my geekiness. And they even further up the geek ante by having Greek showing after Kyle XY.
I am excited.
Adios.

Yeh, I noticed this too. How can a network with the WORD "Family" in the network title produce a show that actually features a scene of sexual promiscuity (a guy wakes up in bed with some random hot girl and he forgets who she is), and more than a few portrayals of drunken behavior really be on a family network? As a college student, I can't really fathom how they're going to tone down the obviously central "greek"-related theme of inebriated guys looking for other inebriated girls (and vice-versa of course). If they can't air it on Nickelodeon, than why air it here?

I loved the show. It reminded me a LOT of college. This stuff happens everyday at just about every college in the USA. I hope the show is a hit. I know that 10 episodes were ordered.
It was a nice break from all of the crime & medical dramas and reality shows on the other channels. ABC Family is not the milk & honey, peaches & cream network that a lot of people think it is.
I'm glad the network decided to show something other than the mind numbing reruns of "7th Heaven" and "Full House" because those shows have been aired to death.

I agree...I think it's a great, fun show.
I mean, sure it deals with the many stereo-types of sororities and fraternities...but we can't deny that a lot of these things "semi-toplessness," "underclassmen experimentation with drinking," and "fights" DON'T happen!!?! They most certainly did at my university and almost everyone else's that I know...
I also find it refreshing, that although the network does have the word "family" in it, they've chosen to not completely censor/sugar coat the collegiate greek experience...
Whether we like it or not, this is now part of the modern "family" experience...

good points jeremy. I watched the show and was VERY impressed with it. I did not expect much, maybe that's why i thought it was really good, but it showed a lot of originality and interesting stories. Well made, well acted, I will be watching.
Aside from GREEK, i only watch the occasional Kyle XY, and the Whose Line's they show at 10 most nights... those shows aren't exactly G rated either... I like what they are doing on ABC family and think they have the right idea of what 'family' is here and now

I watched the replay last night on ABC Family ... I didn't watch it on the main ABC station last night ...
They EDITED the show from how it was on Monday night ...
The scene where Rusty goes into the sorority house was shortened ... as well as the scene Casey surprises the pledge in the bathroom stall ... Those were the two most noticable edits ...
Yeah, I know that they had to edit it to make room for the extra commercials ...

What is the theme song? I don't mean the Plain White T's song, I mean the one they play over the credits at the end. It sounds like Feist, but I've looked everywhere and can't find it...Help! By the way, I love the show. Even if it's not realistic, it's entertaining, which is what TV is supposed to be. Plus, Scott Michael Foster is gorgeous. And is no one going to comment on how racy Kyle XY is for ABC Family? That guy got a boner in public, and the younger brother has Playboys hidden in a board game box.

In reference to the comments above regarding the name ABC Family...ABC purchased the network from Fox Family which hosted The 700 Club. Unfortunately The 700 Club has an important stipulation in contract that states that anyone who purchases the network will have to keep the name "Family" in their network (ultimately forever). There is more information in Wikipedia, but basically it's a huge hassle to legally change the name. Yes, the name ABC Family may seem deceiving, but I don't think it's wrong at all for them to show some racy shows. They are allowed to show what they want to improve their ratings and give users decent programming. Unfortunately they can't change the name ABC Family otherwise it would be called something else and in my opinion their strategy of showing teen to young adult programming is better than duplicating effort from the Disney Channel (which ABC owns by the way).

. I think "GREEK" i something that a sister and brother can watch together while watching their dad nod in certain places cause he remembered doing that. Beer pong for instance? I hope more people watch Greek so it can be like the new Grey's Anatomy and everybody watches it. p.s Cappie, you are my hero!
