The most frustrating thing about watching Last Comic Standing has got to be the misrepresentation of stand up comedy as a form of entertainment and a way to make a living. However a close second is the way the producers edit the show to leave out certain things.
In a recent episode of the show, comedian Doug Benson auditioned in Minnesota and the audience learned that he had previously auditioned in Los Angeles but wasn't asked back. According to the episode that aired, the reason that Doug didn't make the cut was because Ant thought Doug wasn't exciting enough onstage, but that is only half the story.
Ask yourself this...why was Doug sent away from the competition just because Ant didn't like him? What about Kathleen and Alonzo? If they voted for him then it doesn't matter what Ant thought, right? Well, here's what you didn't see:
At the daytime auditions, Ant's judge status had clearly gone straight to his head and when Doug auditioned Ant was so drunk with power he decided that he didn't want to hear from Doug and insisted that he not be put through to the next round.
Before Doug even got out of the club, he was told that he had an appointment to re-audition in Minneapolis. It seemed that Ant had been "abusing his power" all day and treating many of the comedians with extreme disrespect.
So, as we saw, Doug auditioned again in Minneapolis and made it to the next round. The ironic part of the story is that the producers did the same thing with Ant in season two. The producers felt they had made a mistake not letting Ant into the final group in season one, so they asked him to audition again and were happy to give him way too much screen time.
The good news is that, from what I understand, there is no comedian house this season, just performances and hopefully none of them will be from Ant.

I've seen this guy on VH1's Best Week Ever and the like.
How is he able to do that when he's going through this show, in terms of contractually. It seems like he's already quite successful.

I like Doug Benson, but, that's because I already know him--I thought this show was for unknowns? I felt bad for the people he steamrolled in Minnesota.

Doug is very funny. He had a podcast a while back that Bill Dryer use to be on also sometimes. I hate Ant though. His hairpiece looks so idiotic. He is the worst part of this new season. A Season that has so far been pretty good.
Just get rid of Ant!!!!

This show isn't exclusively for people who are complete unknowns. Kathleen Madigan had a great stand-up special on Comedy Central before appearing on LCS and had a role on "That 80s Show" Others had a Comedy Central special as well- Todd Glass, Gabrielle Iglesias.
And to have Ant determine who is funny is a joke in and off itself. The only time his routine is funny is when he steals jokes from other comics.

I think Ant is a bit overexposed, especially since he just hosted a season of Celebrity Fit Club. I think some of the decisions he makes are biased.
As far as Last Comic Standing being for unknowns -- that's really not the case. Bill Dwyer is well established and like Doug Benson is a regular on VH1. Mark Price (Skippy from Family Ties) audition and got rejected a couple of seasons ago. They're not the only well recognized personalities that have been on the show either.

I find it funny that Arj Barker made it through and he's got a recurring part in Flight of the Concords that airs *right* after the Sunday showing of LCS.

i was wondering about doug benson too, he's very famous. but i guess anyone can be on LCS. i'm rooting for him, he's absolutely hilarious on Vh1 although i have no comment on the marijuana logues. as excited as i was for the marijuana logues, it's nothing but cliche jokes that aren't even the case for true smokers - not cool. but doug is very funny and ant isn't. his job is to host celebrity fit club where no one would ever know he was a comedian, i didn't know until i started watching LCS.

Isn't it kind of unfair then to give a comic who is well-known and probably pretty well off $250,000, and NBC Universal Contract, AND a Bravo special?

Truly "unknown" comics would suck it up. As said before (on here I think), it's not like singing, where you can really practice your craft on your own or in community/school/church choirs and then go and surprise a group of people in an audition.
In order to be a competent stand-up, one that would be worthy of a development deal and a Bravo special (yet alone craft a set well and perform as much material as LCS contestants will need to perform), you really have to be at least somewhat experienced and established.
I'm not sure what the official rules are (for instance, I don't think a stand-up superstar like Jerry Seinfeld would qualify :P) but as an example, I certainly recognized and knew the comedy of a large portion of the Canadian comics who auditioned.

.9 --> unless you've got a sitcom deal or doing what the blue collar retards are doing, i don't think comedians are well off even when you see them a lot on stuff like vh1.

I mean well off in terms of popularity, having a substantial fan base, which you can build off from. That's much easier to do for comedians that we've already seen than comedians we have just heard about from this show.

i know a number of 'well known' comics from my too many years in LA - (including bill dwyer - he's hit it somewhat big on the game show network, and i say good for him and his family!), and honestly, while some may be known to a fairly large audience through appearances on tv (like comedy central or talk shows), the money is negligible. it is a very, very tough racket. unless you get a sitcom lead or get a good writing gig, it is extremely difficult to make a living. i could list at least a dozen brilliant comedic minds who are just scraping by - despite having decent recognition from tv appearances.

I say kudos to whoever wins the money and bravo special. In this ridiculous world where we pay obscene amounts of money to talentless sycophants (Ant- and any amount of money you pay him is too much) we should reward people with true talent. Being a good stand up comedian has got to be harder than say an athlete, who may have talent, but does the same this over and over.

Ant only ever got onto the show because Barry Katz, the show'sexecutive producer, also happened to be his agent:

...I doubt there's a reality show that has a more rigged audition and finalist selection process out there.

Did everyone forget that there is no such thing as a true reality show? I'm sure the results are pre-determined but the comics who made it through are there deservedly so (especially Doug) and I'm looking forward to seeing more of their stuff (kudos to NBC for losing the house.) Maybe they keep Ant around to maintain some balance between talent and sheer hackery? I just hope the comics from the UK, Austraila and Canada get a little more time than they did during the audition episodes.

I'd just prefer it if somone would kindly remove that dead animal from the top of Ant's head. They could feature him on What Not to Wear and start with that brown thing. 1985 called, and they want their Flowbee back.

What a disappointment... I thought the best part of the first season was the, ahem, interaction (read: zingy-one liners and practical jokes) between the comics in the house. I'll miss you, house.
