As we all know, Jericho will live on next season, thanks to a concerted lobbying effort by the show's fans. According to CBS, seven episodes will be created, with the assumption that those episodes will tie up loose ends and conclude the series. But as far as Carol Barbee, one the show's executive producers, fans shouldn't be making that assumption. "We are not closing this story out. We have a story to tell. It's a really rich story, and we've got it mapped out for quite a while." she told Broadcasting & Cable magazine. "The network suggested doing a two-hour movie to wrap up this story. We weren't in any way interested in closing it down."
The reason why they're only doing seven episodes, then? According to Barbee, CBS only had enough free sound stage time for a limited number of episodes. Interesting. So, if the fans of the show put their money where their nuts and e-mails are and actually watch the show, we may see it beyond those seven second-season episodes. That's a big "if", of course...

Did someone forget to tell Barbee that the networks always win these things? cf. David Milch v. HBO (re: Deadwood).

I agree, i think they should have held out for 13 episodes and just ended it. 13 episodes is longer than a 2 hour movie. Plus it will end, again, with questions needing answers and it won't be picked up for more seasons. This seems really dumb to me. if they end it with another cliffhanger that's even worse.

OK, lets be honest, Jericho is still dead it just got a brief reprieve because CBS is nervous about their fall schedule. The reality is that the “Nuts!” campaign showed that Jericho has about 16,000 really dedicated fans but given the show got cancelled while averaging 9.5 million viewers I don’t think those 16,000 people are going to be much help.
Also, face facts, Jericho is going to come back to lower ratings than it had when it left. How do I know this? Because hiatus is what killed Jericho the last time. Its really wishful thinking to accept that the first hiatus knocked 2 million viewers of Jericho’s total but that this new hiatus, which is at least twice as long (remember the show isn’t scheduled to return until early 2008), is going to help the show.
Yes, the nuts were great publicity but most people are going to have forgotten all about that 7 months from now. If CBS really wanted to save the show they’d premiering it with the regular season but the fact that they’re not shows that the show is still dead in CBS' eyes. Which in turn means they'll pull it at the drop of a hat.
Heck, I’d be surprised if the show manages to air all of the 7 promised episodes when all is said and done.

i'm still sort of in shock that anybody really cared about this show. yes, the premise was great, and would have opened up billions of interesting stories about how a reduced society would react to a situation like this. but let's face it: the storytelling was boring, the characters we lifeless, the writing lackluster, and they even gave up 90% of the mystery around episode 16 and didn't even care to get back to that story by the end of the season, replacing it with the stupid town-against-town storyline. compared to stunning, partially groundbreaking shows like lost, sopranos, carnivŕle, deadwood or dexter, this was mediocre at best...

That's BS. So the fans got CBS to agree to give a chance to producers/writers of Jericho to actually get it to an end, to please & thanks those fans who actually loved & watched the show...
..and now producers want to say those same fans "fuck you, you won't get no ending or answers"! Way to go, morons.

I'm willing to hold a little faith that the show might have a longer run.
CBS never really explained why they cancelled this in the first place, in spite of its solid ratings. Is it not possible they realized they made a mistake and are correcting that?
I agree it's long odds, but i think it's possible

Jericho is not dead. CBS' mistakes in understanding the way viewers were watching, lack of promotion and as well, 3 month hiatus hurt the series.
We are working hard to make sure people know about it.

To those of you who didn't like the show, different strokes. There are plenty of us who adored this show, and if the network had paid attention to the fans they had, right on their very own website, they may not have cancelled it in the first place.
It is a new world when it comes to television viewers, and hopefully this is the first step in making the networks begin to budge. ABC brought back Friday Night Lights, which had about 2 million less viewers than Jericho did. We are just asking for our fair shot.
Will we get our show back longer than the 7 episodes? There is no way to know, but there is a large group of us that are working hard to keep it around. We love this show, and have had a bunch of new fans join us because of the campaign and the ability to see the shows online.

Just because a program takes a hiatus does not automatically mean it will lose viewers. A loyal viewer will wait, will watch re-runs, will view online etc. When up against another popular show, as Jericho was with American Idol, doesn't mean viewers have to choose one or the other. Jericho was still viewed by fans via other means, TIVO, online, taped VHS, purchased through itunes. Those choices were not considered when determining the fan base numbers. The fans never left, they simply were not counted.

Thank you for reporting on Carol Barbee's comments.
Yes, CBS said 7 episodes as a mid-season replacement (which may possibly happen in October) with more to follow if the viewers are there. As noted, the viewers were there until the show went into hiatus. At that time, viewers came to CBS on Wednesday night and found no show and then again and then again. I was one of those who made the assumption "Well, another one bit the dust without a word." Then it's return was not publicized. I found it by accident while trying to escape the IDOL crap.
The NUTS campaign had an underlying message of "Yeah, we want Jericho back BUT we also want ALL viewers to be counted -- not just those 25,000 Neilsen boxes." We're tired of being jerked around and won't take it! So you guys just sit on your butts and pat each other on the back and tell each other "What can you do about it?"
KUDOS to CBS for stepping up and saying, "OK, we made a mistake. Let's try again!"
For people who like mindless drivel - no you won't like the show; you have to pay attention and think. If you are looking for one special effect after another connected by a couple of sex scenes - don't think you'll like it.
However, if you are someone that likes to connect with the characters and/or the situation while trying to guess what the secrets and/or mysteries are -- this is the show for you.
But that's why there's chocolate AND vanilla.
Thank you CBS.

Jericho is one of the most well written, well acted shows I have seen in a long time. CBS was wise to give it a second chance. In today's world we would not have M*A*S*H since it took a second season to come into its own. With the support of its fans and promotion by CBS I predict Jericho will be on for years. If you haven't seen it check it out you won't be disapppointed.

As others have said before, Jericho is a show that makes you think. I can watch and discuss Jericho with my mother, who is 93, and with my grandson, who is 17, and my youngest daughter, who is 21. We need more shows like this instead of all the reality shows. I believe CBS did a great deed by reversing their decision to cancel Jericho. All of the fans are out promoting this show and request everyone to watch the encore on CBS on July 6 at 9 eastern time!

July 6th Friday 9eastern 8central. Jericho is a wonderful show that appeals to all age groups. It is so different from all the other cookie cutter shows around right now. How many survivor shows can you watch, how tired of you of seeing people with little or no talent trying to get their 15 minutes of fame singing off key or skating like a klutz or what ever. We sure don't need any more cop shows, or lawyer shows. Since Jericho fans have worked so hard to save their show, you can bet we will work twice as hard to keep it on the air. I wouldn't count it out yet. CBS is smart enough to know they are in a win-win situation, a great show that fans fight for.

FYI, CBS will be running the last 11 episodes of Jericho's first season starting July 9. You folks didn't think they'd be running new episodes already...? Jeez, they just announced the renewal a couple of weeks ago... it'll be weeks before they're even ready to shoot the first new episode.

CBS ARE RERUNNING SEASON ONE BEGINNING FROM JULY 6TH. JULY 6TH. JULY 6TH. NOT July 9th. IT IS JULY 6TH. At 9/8c on CBS. CBS will air the pilot on July 6th, then the week after air a recap episode recapping episodes 1 to 11 at 8, then air episode 12 (which is a flashback episode to the day before the bombs). CBS are not rerunning the entire first season due to the lack of time.
Jericho, hands down, the best show on television. The premise is refreshing and original, and there's absolutely no way we need more CSI's or medical dramas on our screen. Jericho approaches us with a very significant "what if?" premise. This show gets you to think. This show gets to you to emphathise and sympathise with the characters. This show asks you questions. This show keeps you yearning for more. And more, and more.
I suggest EVERYONE gives this show a try. You are missing out if you don't.

You're an idiot. That's exactly what the show did. The town against town battle towards the end of the season was the high point of the series and DID demonstrate how a reduced society would react to a situation like this. What the hell do you want?

Ok, let's be honest, Jericho got brought back because of the overwhelmingly large, organised and dedicated campaign. A show doesn't come back from the dead every day. CBS actually stupidly seem confident about their fall schedule.

Best show on television *snicker* To each his own but honestly... best show on television. Compared to "Lost"? "Heroes"? Every "CSI" there is?
I'll accept your enthousiasm but please don't say things that... oh wait. I understand. You know I thought Jericho looked cheap because of the obvious sets which reminded me of some of the best A-Team stories. But compared to that show "Jericho" tries to sell a serious story. And if you buy how they deliver their story then I can understand that you think it's the "best show on TV".
Now about that invisible icecone here. How about it? Five bucks? *lick* It tastes great, trust me. *hmmm*

Thank you for the article, and thank you to Carol Barbee. I am a Jericho fan. I was very upset that the show was cancelled by CBS without closure, and having the fans blamed for it to boot. I stepped way out of my box to help save this show, and to talk to people about watching the show. very unlike me.
I'm glad that the producers are planning to write these next 7 episodes to allow for a future for Jericho. Anything else would be admitting defeat before we even get started on the new season
