So now we're talking about people who refuse to talk about Paris Hilton.MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski came really close to flipping out on air the other day when her producers kept placing the Paris Hilton story as her lead during the Morning Joe show. She was egged on/patronized by Joe Scarborough and his preppy-looking sidekick.
As you'll see in the video I placed after the jump, Mika starts out really pissed off and then starts to stage a coup on air.
Each time Joe goes to her for the morning headlines, she makes a stink about the top story being about Paris Hilton and then she refuses to read it. She throws the script, attempts to burn it, and shreds it... all the while fuming about her producers' insistence that it is the lead story.
Do you find this on air display refreshing or ridiculous?

Awesome. The rest of the media should stop doing it too. But unfortunately, the media panders to the groundlings and groundlings want celebrity stories instead of real news.

Way to go Mika! Mika used to be a reporter for the CBS affiliate here in Hartford, CT. She's great.

She should start her own cable news channel, I'll watch. She can report on news, something the other "news" stations no longer do. Is there still 150,000 troops in Iraq? I forgot because the whore Paris Hilton got out of jail.

Refreshing.
Sure it looked silly but how stupid is anything pertaining to Hilton to begin with?

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting her once by chance while visiting a relative who worked across the hall from her when she was doing Up to the Minute for CBS. I was a fan then, and am still today, now more than ever. This is why.

While I thought Mika actually "made" the story important by going on and on about it and not merely letting it drop after refusing to lead with it, I applaud her decision to ignore the irritating socialite. If she could repeat that action with less pomp & circumstance, actually giving the story airtime by refusing to give it airtime, that would be even better.

Who can blame her? That what the people watching want to do to the headline. Finally someone in the media who realizes that rich ***** isn't news.

There is the slight possibility that this was staged - but I don't think so. Brzezinski really seemed to revold on the air against what she thought was simply not newsworthy. And I totally agree. If only everybody in the world of news media would do so.
The problem is that this is coming after a 40 day Paris Hilton news bombardment. It feels like it's too little too late. She's out of prison and the revolt against it comes the day after. It's sad that only after something has been ridden to death it still takes a courageous someone like Brzezinski to point out how ridiculous it is to lead-in a news show with a twentysomething alcoholic getting out of jail, showing off as if she just achieved something when the other newsitems on hand are covering a war that's been fought to keep a country safe.
How can it be that Howard Dean is defending the war effort with saying that the soldiers think that their fight is just and for the good of their country when the country is interested in people who drive drunk and endanger others? Is THAT worth fighting for? The freedom to act like there's nothing more important than a spoiled brat?
Paris has become something like a false idol. A golden god everyone seems to worship.
I somehow understand that religious countries consider the american way something dangerous. The loss of values.
THIS is what 24-hour-news networks consider news and not only that: they consider it to be the newsworthiest item of the day. I honestly can not take it anymore. I consider myself an atheist (or better: agnostic) but even I know that this is so much like the old testament it hurts.
Kudos to Mika Brzezinski. At least it kind of feels like somebody took a stand.

What other religious countries? Brazil? Exactly what religious countries are out there that have any kinda of substance to be able to consider America as anything other then something to get stuff from and try not to be killed by?
I'd say it's the non-religious countries a.k.a the UK that consider America dangerous and rightfully so. We are dangerous, really dangerous and not because of "false idols" but because we put people in charge that are either too damn stupid, or are so machiavellian that they pull the strings in their favor and **** anyone else. You know what the lowest common denominator for most of those people who screw over our country? Religion. The opiate of the masses, and that which is the easiest to control them with. Wave a Bible, quote a scripture and of course you must be a good politician, doesn't matter if the other guy actually cares what happens to his fellow man while we are all still alive.
I'm an atheist and it shows, but I don't begrudge kids their invisible friends and I show the same courtesy to adults. Have your religion all you want, but don't blame the problems of an entire society on the fact that people are straying from your belief system. I don't blame it all on religion, I simple recognize the fact that some people are idiots and move on.
@ #15
When did Fox News start taking news anchors with journalistic integrity?
@ #9
She kept on with it because her producers didn't want to let her drop it so they wouldn't update the prompter with any real news, that's why she had to keep fighting.
@ Mika
You rock! Keep it up.

By the way - I don't have any religion :-)
I was just saying that I can understand that religious countries (pick any one you like where a bomb exploded in the past couple of years) consider this way of life a threat because it is so absolutely contrary to a structured, organized lifestyle (which religion often usually implies - even the Hindi in India don't hurt cows - I now that doesn't necessary mean they would start bombing people but I guess they would regard the western lifestyle dangerous to their values).
I understand what you mean, Joseph, but you are honestly not talking against my point. You kind of add to it. Because in a country that is supposed to be THIS religious with a leader who says he feels he was sent by god it is absolutely irritating how much people seem to value the bible and in the end worship something so totally different. But maybe that's the part of society that's atheist like me and you? *scratches head* I guess not when you take into account how many religious leaders were caught "in the act", commiting a sin in the last couple of years.
