(S01E05) We get a new guest star this week when Greta's dad (Kyle Secor) pops into town, not only does he know something about Greta's mysterious past (does anyone in town not know about this by now?), but he's a bit of a bastard as well. Suffice it to say, if you find yourself guest-starring on Hidden Palms, your character is probably going to have problems. You'll either be a substance abuser, have something to do with Eddie's murder / suicide, or you'll be part of Johnny's past ... or some combination of the three.
There's some big-time secrets about Eddie's death revealed in this episode. That is, if the source is to be believed. I won't spoil it for you here, but both the source of the info, and the person searching for the info haven't been the most honest of players in our little trendy Hidden Palms enclave.
Is Johnny's stepdad the nicest guy in all of Palm Springs (maybe besides Jesse Jo) or what? I swear, you could punch the guy in the crotch and he'd still take you out for dinner and drinks afterwards. Plus, he keeps reaching and dropping all sorts of dough on Johnny. Wise up, kid! You don't have to like the guy, but you could fake it and take a free ride. Jeez, kids these days. I feel for the guy.
It's been great to see Liza finally breaking out of the background wallflower role and actually doing something, even though her ninja breaking and entering skills are a bit off. The "evidence" reveal was slightly corny, but I'm willing to be forgiving. She's sort of like Nancy Drew's older sister ... with a penchant for blowing stuff up. Idea! Throw her and Kristen Bell into a show together about two blonde sisters who solve crimes. It writes itself, right? CW, I'm available for story meetings and pitch sessions.
Nitpick alert: who does the music for this show? The hard rock when Greta and Cliff start making out? The wacky golfing music? That sorta killed it for me. The music has been up and down with this show, from the awkward theme song, to the offbeat choices. It feels like they nailed it in the pilot, but drifted off-target since then.
PS - I have to take back what I said about Cliff in the last episode review. Boy, was I wrong or what? That last scene was a bit of a shocker as well. Holy robbing the cradle, Batman!

Cliff just a little bit off-kilter isn't he? I mean what vices have he not tried out yet?
Definitely feel for Johnny's stepdad. I'm shocked he has been this awesome. I expected a dark past or a hidden mean streak, but he really does seem to care about Johnny and his mother. Go figure.
Then again maybe later we'll find out HE killed Eddie. Odder things have happened. Heh.
