(S06E01) I love the name of this episode: Heritage. With the shocking death of Walt Bannerman (the always great Chris Bruno) (I didn't see it coming, but my 13 year old son says he did), we have not only Reverend Purdy's Heritage foundation (where Bannerman died), but also the heritage he leaves to Johnny, and his son J.J. One of the primary questions that has endured for five seasons can now be explored: If Walt were not there, would Johnny and Sarah get together? Are they fated to be together? (If the previews for next week are any indication, the answer would be, "Not just yet.")I worry because Greg Stillson has persistently pursued Sarah too. I am not convinced that she sees him for the villain that we (the audience) and Johnny know him to be. Though, Stillson did tell Johnny this episode that he isn't as bad as Johnny thinks he is...
Having seen Stillson's murderous past, I don't think anything will convince us of that. However, it will be interesting to see if the show tries to sugarcoat Vice President Stillson, particularly with his evil advisor Malcolm Janus dead.
I wondered during this episode if perhaps David Ogden Stiers was leaving the show, because at one point, Johnny's visions led him to believe that Purdy was dead. However, Johnny, even realizing that anything he does to try to change one vision can lead to bad things, warned Walt that now Purdy (rather than Walt) was dead in the vision, and that warning ultimately led to Walt's demise. Or, at least Johnny thinks so.
When Walt got the contents of the envelope from the older woman, he opened it and remarked that John Smith was in for a big surprise. I was wondering what that could be about (I mean, could anything really shock Johnny at this point?), and then I realized what it must be: Look again at the name of the episode. Heritage. I bet we are going to find out that John Smith (and his oh, so laughably generic name) is actually something like John Purcell. Or maybe even John Stillson... wouldn't that be great? Can't you just see it? Johnny's mother lets the Bible salesman in, has an affair, has a child-- and boom! Johnny and Greg are brothers.
This is sheer speculation on my part, but wouldn't that be sort of delicious?
I am pretty sure Nicole de Boer (Sarah) is pregnant in real life (or has just had a child): Her face has the slight puffiness you see in pregnant women that actresses simply can't reproduce with a prosthetic uterus. So, it could be that she and J.J. will disappear for awhile to deal with their grief over Walt's death. I don't know, but it seems plausible.
I was frustrated last season because the episodes seemed to have lost their focus: Johnny's prevention of the apocalypse. They seem to be on track, and as sad as Walt's death is, it certainly provides some great material for the coming season!

When Johnny shook hands with Stillson at the funeral he didn't see the White House exploding. So doesn't that give anyone else the clue that they just resolved the apocalypse storyline with the death of Janus?
I thought the big reveal from Walt was going to be that he was Purdy's son.

First of all, I thought this whole episode was going to turn to out be one of Johnny's visions because there was a new kid playing J.J. and when it turned out that Walt died I was really disappointed. If they had to lose a character it seems like Bruce would have been a much better choice since his character is pretty much superfluous now than Johnny can walk and run just fine. Second, as for the reveal I was thinking it will turn out that J.J. is really Walt's son, especially after that scene in which Walt is helping J.J. put on a tie and he says he looks just like Walt. That would mean Sarah would have had to have sex with Walt very soon after Johnny went into the coma, which doesn't seem likely, but it would bring the series in the line with the King novel in which J.J. was not Johnny's son. I guess we'll see how the season progresses. As much as I've enjoyed this series I really believe it's about time to think about wrapping up The Dead Zone for good.

I think the show just completely changed.
Spoiler:
During the previews it showed the new sherrif and the conflict between her and Johnny.
/Spoiler
It seems like the show is going to move completely away from the old story and story lines, its like the show got a complete reboot. I think the apocalypse story line is done and over, which is sad because it made the show interesting.

This episode was very strange for me. It felt very much like they were attempting to reboot the show in a lot of ways, but I get no sense of where the show is supposed to be going now. It seemed a little too much like the show was wrapping up a lot of loose ends, and I don't know that I like what's coming next.
Just speculating, but I'd venture that we are now going to get a whole Johnny/Sarah/Stillson love triangle going, which will pull its drama from the fact that Johnny likely still thinks that Stillson is going to be responsible for Armageddon, but the more he pushes that idea, the farther he'll push Sarah away. Seems a bit like they're forcing these two together. And it seems like it's going to be really clumsy how they constantly have Vice President Stillson constantly showing up in little Cleaves Mill. They need to really bump up everything surrounding him if they want to sell the idea that he's the Vice President of the United States. Everything about him seems like he's a local city council member.
And we are apparently getting a new sheriff in town, one that will apparently be Johnny's new love interest. Yawn.
I liked the show better when the Armageddon storyline was front and center and the mythology was being advanced.
I don't know... We'll see I guess.

Am going to miss Walt, but a Sarah/Greg relationship would be very interesting. I have no interest in seeing Sarah and Johnny a couple again. I also like the idea of a new storyline other than the armageddon storyline. Greg and Johnny being brothers would be an interesting arc in the story. Rating for this episode? 8/10

Yeah, this episode pissed me off. From what I can gather, they sent Bruce "away" for an opportunity in another state (aka off the show), killed Walt (very much off the show), AND killed Janus, not only removing the actor from the show, but killing the apocalypse/heritage foundation-as-puppet storylines. It feels to me like they've decided to start cutting costs on the show and change the direction to a non-arc format, which means cutting recurring characters/plotlines out. I point to what happened in Veronica Mars last season as an example, although they've gone to the extreme in this case. Without the apocalypse storyline, the show moves completely away from the novel; not that it hadn't diverged quite a bit in the last few years anyway, but is there anything really left? Certainly the writers weren't planning for this, because last year's season finale would have been a much better place to put all these major changes in the show. I can't help but wonder if USA wasn't forcing their hand. USA=Janus. In that context, it makes Purdy's words to Janus about his concerns with The Heritage Foundation's direction much more interesting. Ok, not really ;-)

NICE, now I don't need to watch the flipping episode because the 'event I didn't see coming' is spoiled just from browsing the front page of this site. I'm really getting tired of that guys! Get with it!

We haven't seen the last of the apocalypse, folks. Let's think about it for one moment - what did Johnny see when he shook Stillsons hand again? Washington, DC, yes, and not getting blown up by a nuclear explosion. But that doesn't mean that the apocalypse has been averted, it could very well be, that just the shape of the apocalypse has changed from nuclear to say, well, biological. Washington looked peaceful, but so do cemeteries. Wouldn't be the first time that Johnny got deceived by one of his visions...

Thanks for covering this show, I'm glad to see it's getting reviewed. I know a lot of people are complaining about the post not warning about spoliers, but come on. The post obviously recaps the episode, so if you haven't seen it yet, once you see the headline, just move on.

Thanks for the spoiler warning - a reviewer giving away a plot is like the girl cooking with the spoiled crab on Hell's Kitchen - you should be kicked off the show.

So without being a jerk about it, here is some friendly advice. When posting a review for a show, don't write anything specific or give away the episode in the early paragraphs. You want to wait to talk about the specifics until later paragraphs that users can't read until they click the "Continue reading..." link.

Hey, here's a better idea. Don't read reviews of a show that clearly indicate the title of the episode as the heading for the post if you don't want to know what happens.
C'mon people...don't piss on the reviewer because you couldn't avert your eyes.

I'm also wondering if Walt's death was do to budget cuts. I know that this season, they moved filming from Vancouver to Montreal. But, I'm not sure if that adds or cuts costs.
I really hope this isn't the end of the Stillson/apocalypse stroyline.

Geez people, the spoiler was not in the title and the picture gave away nothing. I know when a show I watch is covered here I stop at the title and scroll past it without reading further.
It really isn't hard to do. Now if the title said "So and So was killed" then you would have a point, but come on, the premier aired on Sunday. How long do you want to wait for them to cover it? The grace period was over.
I just hope they don't review the series finale of Deep Space Nine or NYPD Blue. I still haven't seen them and don't want them to spoil it for me.

Is it a coincidence that the Colby on Numbers (Dylan Bruno, Chris Bruno's brother) had a similar "you'll never see it coming" role in their season ender? What are the Bruno brothers up to.....

Those people that recall the Dead Zone movie (I didn't read the novel) can speculate on a different ending involving Johnny, Sarah and Tillson.Tillson does seem to be stalking her.
Also if JJ isn't Johnny's,and if Sarah thought this might be a possibility, don't you think by now she might have had a paternity test done ? (no, I didn't think so,either).
John and Stillson as brothers would be interesting altho at first, I thought it would be that John was Purdy's son (no longer do;who cares if that were true?)
I was stunned that they killed off Walt and I don't think it's so they Johnny and Sarah can get back together. I think those two have made their peace with what has happened between them. I also hope there is no romance with the new sheriff. If anything, there might be a lot of friction until she understands and trusts Johnny like Walt did.RIP Walt.

Hey Rob. The show aired a week ago. No spoilers in the title. Saying that they spoiled it for you is like saying your parents spoiled Christmas because YOU unwrapped your present early.

I am sorry, but I have to disagree with the majority of the voices here. I thought the apocalypse story line was the most ridiculous line I have seen in some time - it is overused. I am glad it is over, and I hope it does NOT resurface!
