When I heard Speed Racer was coming to Nicktoons, I figured it was the original cartoon, but no such luck. Instead, a newer version is being created to (not) coincide with the upcoming live-action film version from the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix), although having both debuting around the same time will definitely result in the kind of synergy studios crave.
The new Speed Racer 'toon is being produced through Lionsgate and Animation Collective, the studio behind Kappa Mikey, an anime-inspired comedy that also airs on Nicktoons.
The new Speed Racer series will actual focus on the son of the original Speed Racer, who finds out who his father is after joining a racing academy. Also, he drives a Mach 6 rather than a Mach 5, and Chim Chim the monkey is now a robot.
Is it just me, or did the people behind this show just take the basic plot of Speed Racer and "Mad Lib" a few changes (and rather unoriginal changes, too)? Hopefully between this new movie and new TV series, younger folks will have their curiosity piqued and want to check out the original Speed Racer.

Is this a totally new Speed Racer cartoon, or just "new to America" cartoon? There was a Speed Racer released in Japan around 2000 that had a plotline similar to what you describe.... I wonder if this might either be the same thing, or an adaptation of that?
