Jericho fans, I blame this all on you. If you weren't so successful with your campaign to renew the series none of what is going on now would have happened. Instead, we have Mars bars being sent to the head of CW programming to renew Veronica Mars, online petitions being written to keep ABC's Traveler on the air, and now KitKat bars being sent to everyone connected with American Idol to have former runner-up Katharine McPhee come back to the show next season to perform.
See what you guys and gals have done?!
It seems that McPhee's fans, known as "McPhans", are a bit miffed that Katharine was not brought back for this past season's finale of AI even when she called and expressed her interest to program executives. So, these McPhans have started Project KitKat to express their anger. American Idol and FOX network execs who dissed Katharine will be sent KitKat bars along with a strongly-worded note expressing the fans' disappointment with the show.
McPhee's fans have even created a video on the project, which can be seen after the jump. I wish them good luck because all I see happening is a bunch of network and show executives getting fatter while Hershey Foods gets richer from all of the candy that's purchased.

Yeah... because when people send me candy, I get offended.

Jericho fans were not the first fans to do something like this. They didn't spark some sort of fad. Fans have been sending networks things and sign petitions for years and years. It's nothing new.

Yeah, seriously. I don't get people who are somehow upset that this is happening. Is this really impacting you negatively?
Okay, maybe it means you as a TV blogger have more to write about. Wait, how is that a bad thing? So yeah I don't get the negativity here.

Jess you are right about Jericho not being the first, but since Jericho fans sent in the nuts, the petition thing has gotten a lot more people doing it for various shows. And these people need to try something different, other than food. Because in that sense, they are specifically copying Jericho.

I'm a Kat fan and this is a great way to let Idol executives know how much KAT was missed this season. McPhans are very upset about Kat being the only top finalist from last year who didn't perform on Idol this season. Since she was the 1st Runner Up, if anybody deserved to be there, it was Kat. It's a fun way to get the message across. The Idol franchise should strive to support all their artists and not play favorites. It doesn't sit well with the fans.

I can certainly understand why Kat fans are ticked off. She should have been included. In fact, AI upset a lot of fan bases this year. That speech by Clive on the Finale had Taylor and Kelly fans up in arms. Kat's had a very successful year and was also named one of People Magazine's Most Beautiful. I think Kat's fans are handling their disappointment with a lot of class!

Well, to be fair, the Jericho campaign has sparked a whole lot of similar campaigns *this* year. No, of course they weren't the first, but I'm quite sure that their recent success has spurred people into action who otherwise wouldn't have bothered. (especially this one - really, what's the point?)
I wish people would understand that Jericho was a fluke, and they were lucky to get their way.

Thanks TV Squad for the story! The Kit Kat Project is simply a cute way to turn a negative into a POSITIVE. Mainly because it is a way to let American Idol and the Fox Network know just how popular Kat is with the fans and how much she was missed this season. Not to mention the fact that it was clearly unfair to exclude her as the 1st Runner Up. This is an effort to send a message that hopefully will ensure her an invite in seasons to come as well as promote her album and current single "LOVE STORY" which is moving up the charts. Check it out!

I think this is a great way to let them know that not only Kat fans are upset, but a lot of fans of the show are upset with the way they treat past Idols. The candy and the notes that are going with them leave no doubt as to their intent. BTW, it's not only Kat fans who are doing this. I know a lot of Taylor fans doing it too because of the way he was treated at the finale. If nothing else, it will make them aware that we are not going to sit idly by and let them keep dissing the people who have made them successful. Thank you TV Squad for showing this. We all appreciate it.

Great Article and video! It's about time we stick up for what WE want to watch. I'm a fan of American Idol and always love what they create, but I felt they didn't do Kat justice. Regardless, the show must go on, and her new single "Love Story" is continuing to gain radio play.

It's sad that these campaigns are even needed. But TV execs are still in the dark ages when it comes to true viewership numbers and new revenue streams that these smaller but dedicated fan bases provide.

I Think its a sweet way to let the idol heads know just how much the Kat fans missed seeing her. It was not fair, should never have happened.. And I for one hope they got our sweet message.

I get upset all over again everytime I watch this video and see Kat say "I actually wasn't invited back this year" with that hurt look on her face. This project is a good way to let the big wigs see just how many fans they've upset this year and maybe they'll be more thoughtful next season. I hope to see Kat make her return during Season 7.

Here I am again...saying the same thing! Why didn't we send the EMPTY wrappers of the Kit Kat bars. That way the execs would have a mess to clean up and the message that AI without Kat this season left a lot of people feeling EMPTY!!! Then they wouldn't get fat...we would!!! LOL!

"Roswell" fans started this trend by sending Tabasco bottles into the network to save the show; Entertainment Weekly named the series' fans as changing television history.
I hope Katharine gets to perform next season on "Idol". I missed her this year.

Difference is, with Jericho the sending in things to the network thing is the first time it actually worked. Now more people are motivated to send items to the network.

Why would AI want her back. Her CD isn't selling, and she's into red carpets and photo shoots showing her McTatas and crotch shots.

I would have wanted Katharine McPhee to perform this past spring, but maybe she was busy those months promoting her album. It came out January 30th. I'm sure she would have loved to perform on American Idol. That show was so caught up onto other things this season that they didn't let other performers perform on it.
