So You Think You Can Dance: Week 1 Results

Jessi & Pasha - So You Think You Can Dance

(S03E07) With their results show, I think So You Think You Can Dance has more in common with Dancing With The Stars than American Idol. I've always found the Idol results show to be a little tedious. Both of the dancing shows add a lot of value to the shows with the amount of performance that they put into them. The group dance put together by Wade Robson that kicked off the show was another great example of that. It was a very fun performance to a great song, "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See" by Busta Rhymes.

With that in the books, they got right to the results of the fan voting. It seems that things ran right along the lines of the TV Squad readers votes as the poll results for Wednesday's show correctly predicted the bottom three couples. Sabra & Dominic, Ashlee & Ricky, and Faina & Cedric are the week one bottom three.

There was a break before the dancers would get the chance to "dance for their lives" as Nigel is so fond of saying. Season two winner, Benji Schwimmer, came out to chat with Cat before adding a performance of his own. It was very good and the crowd absolutely loved it. He ended things by dropping his pants to reveal his American flag underwear.

One by one each of the bottom six dancers came out for their solo performance. As a group, it was a very impressive display. They made a good case for just how tough the competition is going to be this season as there wasn't anyone that clearly stood out as the one that should go home. I thought Sabra's solo was the best of the bunch, with Ashlee being the weakest of the girls. There just wasn't a whole lot there.

The guys were actually pretty even. My one concern watching Dominic is that his solo performances are starting to feel very familiar. It seems like we have seen him do that a lot at this point. Part of that could be that he was featured more than a lot of the other contestants on the audition shows. Or it could just be that he is going back to the same tricks too often and needs to change things up if he should land in the bottom three again.

Fortunately for him, he'll have that chance. Nigel did mention that same concern about his tricks getting stale, but complimented his personality. And in what was a bit of a surprise given how the season was set up, Ricky is the first of the guys to be eliminated.

Ashlee was eliminated from the girls side, and I didn't think that was much of a surprise. She's clearly a talented dancer, but coming off of what was a sub-par tango on performance night, she really needed to shine in her solo. This just wasn't her night. Because Ashlee and Ricky were a couple, there will be no changes to the lineup for next week.

So what did you think? Did the judges get it right? Personally, I would have voted off Ashlee and Dominic. This caps off what I think was a terrific beginning to the season three competition. I really thought we would have to get through a couple eliminations before things would become so tight. They'll do it all again for two hours next Wednesday.

Did the judges get it right?
