Isaiah Washington didn't wait long to spill his guts about how pissed off he is over being fired from Grey's Anatomy. He gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly where he blamed "the media" for blowing things out of proportion. In case you need a recap: Washington nearly got into a fistfight on set last year with Patrick Dempsey when he (Washington) referred to homosexual co-star T.R. Knight in a derogatory way. Not too much was made of the incident, but then Washington made things worse when he went on to deny he said it and then he repeated the F-word at the Golden Globes. Here's what he says to EW about "the media" taking him down:"I can only apologize so many times. I can only accept so much responsibility. All the players involved have taken care of what we needed to take care of in-house - and the media took it in a different direction. I hope that everyone is happy for the outcome for Isaiah, but Isaiah will go on and do what I love to do. And I have to go about the business of letting people know what's written about me is not the truth."
I have to say... after reading the interview with Washington, I still found him to be smug and to not comprehend that HE. WAS. WRONG. He says he's made apologies to everyone and he has done everything the network has asked. But, does he realize that he is intolerant? I see no remorse.
One more note: He says that the actors from Grey's have not contacted him about getting fired. Hmmmm.
*UPDATE: The Associated Press has more insight on Washington's firing in this article, which calls ABC's decision "cool and calculated" based on both his derogatory remarks toward T.R. Knight, but also his poor behavior in general on the set. Sounds like he was a real prima donna.

He's definitely not the best actor in the world, so no big lose for Grey's - he's knows it and that's why he's crying!

Hate our PC world. So he called some a name. Get over it. Not worth firing someone over THAT.

bgdc,
I added a link to the bottom of the story to an AP article that says Washington had other behavior issues than just his use of derogatory terms.

I agree with him, they should have not fired him.
They should have made his charater gay so then he would have quit. :)
Does anyone actually think he will get another huge job? He will most likely get some small shit jobs for the next few years.
And talknig in the third is annoying and shows you are crazy.

Yeah, David. I'd say his career is kaput.
And, yes, I'm with you guys about talking in the third person. What's really annoying about it is he goes from first- to third- person in the same freakin' sentence!

Name aside, he physically assaulted a co-worker and that will get you fired almost anywhere. That's added to the fact that he clearly doesn't know when to drop it ("The Media is making a big deal out of this and it has nothing to do with the fact that I bring it up every change I get")
I'm not a fan of the word and I don't think people should use it but if that was it I wouldn't think it justified firing either. But at this point Isaiah has gone so far beyond just using the word once in anger that I don't even think that's the issue anymore.

I blame the media for not telling us what Adolf Hitler did earlier, if the US got into the war right away who knows how many people could've lived.
I also blame the media for my lack of dates with supermodels. All the bad press they get make them really shy and every new years eve I have to renew my resolution to date more supermodels.
Oh and "kaputt" is written with two t here in Germany I was wondering where "kaput" is usually used and if that's how I should write it when I am in the english part of the Internet :-)

Reading the AP article is enormously disturbing to me. Am I reading this right that a gay friend of Washington accuses the "white gay mafia"?
Jesus. How on earth can you play the race card in this situation? And even IF the gay mafia did it I go with Chris Rock when I say "If the nation of islam would have happened to get their hands across OJ's bloody glove, OF COURSE they would've used it against him".
How stupid can you be IF and I say IF there is actually a gay driven campaign against Washington, NOT to use his outburst of total idiocy? How on earth can you call somebody a fa**** on national TV and expect to actually be allowed to return back to work? He should've been glad his ass wasn't thrown to the street right afterwards. ABC decided to cleanly cut him from the show when the time was right and that's it. He should be glad he got the money for the rest of the season. How can you be so idiotic?
But honestly, in part, I can understand some people who try to defend him. I thought about it a bit longer and with people who are my friends I often use slurs that can not hurt them when they blatantly don't fit - for instance I use the german term for f**** with my brother all the time to nag him. But the way Washington used it... man... it seemed he used it all his life to label gay men.
I understand that people might say he things about gay men like I do - honestly not that much. I don't really care about them as long as they don't try to get into my pants ^^;
But again the way he said it... to me it was disturbing because nobody was talking to him and nobody asked him about it. Everybody tried to forget about it because they were giving him the benefit of the doubt. But after that - sorry - no chance. It's like taking a cookie out of the cookie jar, getting a stern warning and then going right back, take it and eat some more cookies in front of the whole family.

Looks like they censored my post. The F-word is related to For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. The F word is not a synonym with gay. Faggot is a term for a pile of sticks ( http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?sourceid=Mozilla-search&va=faggot ). It has a negative connotation but it is not and never will be on the level of the F-word. I really hate how the PC policy have made common words into unmentionables. They did the same with a nasty synonym for black people and now it's called the "n-word." Strangely, it wasn't until the OJ trial that ANYONE ever said something as ridiculous as "n-word."

Faggot in the USA is considered a gay slur. And once again if someone on the set called him a niggar, which he is, and started to fight with him he would have been fired months ago!
If you fight at work anywhere and call someone a slur you will most likely bee fired. What part of that don't you understand bgdc?
It was either fire him or fire everyone else as it seems clean no one was on his side. Would you have fired everyone else besides Washington, bgdc?

David, for a slur would I fire someone? No. I've worked in biotech labs and many tech companies from tiny 12 person places to 500 employees. I've heard all manner of insults; not a single person was ever fired for it. It's part of life. Shrug.

Did any of them use the slur and start fights? You are now just picking and choosing facts to make you look less... ignorant.
"Famous" people can't say niggar and they shouldn't be able to say faggot. No one anywhere should start fights. The cast doesn't like him and makes the workplace bitter, on a TV show that is bad.

Honestly, I'm not bothered by his actions behind the scenes. He could have made the workplace environment pure hell as far as I'm concerned, but since I don't see it, I only care about what happens on screen. And since I enjoyed his character, I'm more than willing to forgive the actor for everything, regardless of whether he honestly feels sorry or not.

What Mr. Washington said was inexcusable and assaulting anyone, anywhere is also inexcusable. What Patrick Dempsey's participation in the incident was his only recourse. But unfortuntely for me, somewhere I wish, deep down he had beaten the crap out of him. Those kind of people only understand that kind of lesson.
What Mr. Washington said at the Golden Globes was so shocking to me my mouth dropped - along with his cast members. Any seasoned member of the entertainment business knows a company is going to quietly wait for a contract to expire. No one could expect to be renewed after that firestorm no matter what remedies were taken -his words were not an act of bad or poor judgement - they were a moral judgement that would reflect on ABC. This wasn't a "mistake" or an "error in judgement." This is an attitude toward a persuasion of society that requires as much acceptance as a race or ethnic background or nationality.

The truth is, I'm glad he's gone. There was too much stuff about him in the press that it kind of ruined his character for me. When I was supposed to be looking at Preston Burke, I was seeing Isiah Washington and his stupid comment and his dislike of the gay community. Media's fault? Probably. His own fault for saying what he said in the first place? Absolutely.
Either way, I feel sorry for him that he lost his job because of this, but I'm glad he's gone.

bgdc you are friggin funny :-)
I looked up "douchebag" in the dictionary too. That's not a slur either, it's the name of a product.
Or "cracker". That's some kind of salted cookie I understand.
And honestly - the f-word is used about 60 different ways in the english language (you can google "the many uses of the f-word" and listen to that bit) you honestly think that when you hit your hand with a hammer and uttering "f***" it's the same as being named a fa**** when that's clearly a demeaning description of a gay man?
Sure. Right.
