Don't do it Rainn.
Fox News' Roger Friedman reports that NBC is actually thinking about giving the Dwight Schrute character his own spin-off show. Friedman is often wrong but this time it was confirmed (sorta) by Wilson himself. Friedman met Wilson at a party after the Tony Awards the other night and Wilson is the one who brought it up.
Hmmm...I don't know about this. Sure, Frasier was a hit and a quality show, but for every Frasier there are three After M*A*S*H or Hawk (the spin-off of Spenser: For Hire) spin-offs. And it's way too early to talk about this anyway. The Office still has several years to go, so we'll see how things stand then. But I hate it when secondary characters get their own show, because we like this characters in the context of how they act in the original show. You make them the star, the focal point, and you suddenly have to make them multi-dimensional, and they have to carry the show themselves.

love dwight schrute and rainn. hate the idea of taking him off the office. the great thing about the office is that it is an ensemble show. it's not the michael scott show.

The reason Dwight is funny is because of the Office and all the characters together. It's a bad idea to spin him off! It would harm the office and it would hurt Rainn's career in the long run.
Back in the day during Three's Company run, the Ropers were given their own spin off and it failed. They weren't allowed to come back to Three's Company ands the rest is history!

You wanna try it? Go ahead, but wait for the end of the office. That way, if it's a disaster, then at least we won't have lost a key element of the original show.

I would like to see Rainn Wilson do more with characters that are similar to his character Arthur on Six Feet Under (and not in a spin-off).

Meh... I'm pretty cold to the idea overall. Seems a shade too close to that much-maligned friends spin-off Joey. I could see it working as a between-seasons micro or mini-series, like what Galactica is going to air in November. A sort of side story to whet your appetite and keep you interested in that wasteland after a season ends but before the next one begins. 1 or two one hour specials. The Schrute Chronicles, maybe? Could even be referenced on the next season.

Frasier only started AFTER Cheers was over, and Frasier was really a secondary character. They really could make his life broader with his own show. What can they possibly do with Dwight that could be funny and interesting for a half hour?

Terrible, terrible idea. I'd watch it and love it, but TV comedies almost never succeed without a likable main character. Self centered (Jerry Seinfeld), snobbish (Frasier Crane), moronic (Homer Simpson) are fine, as long as they're someone you might enjoy hanging out with. And Dwight is not someone like that at all.

They should try it out first with an Office Special, or just an episode devoted to Dwight. Something like everyone goes on a trip and Dwight is the only one around to film, so it's a day in the life of Dwight.
At least give him a small start, instead of blowing off a whole series; test it out first.

#10 - brilliant. A day in the life of Dwight when he's alone. That's freaking genius.

I hope its not several years for The Office. All I want to see arr two more seasons, otherwise it will peak and the core fans who love the show will find a new comedy to enjoy. Gervais and Merchant ended the original Office for a few reasons and I wouldn't want to see this show dragged out like so many network shows and eventually have to end because the ratings have fallen.

I'm all for a "Dwight, After Dark" or "Dwight Schrute: PI" mini-series. Or maybe a few webisodes. Taking Dwight away from Dunder-Mifflin though would be a huge mistake.
