What I'm watching this summer: Annie's list

Flight of the Conchords

I usually loathe the summer television season because everyday is like Sunday: there's nothing good on. Actually, I believe that's what Morrissey meant when he wrote "Everyday Is Like Sunday". Save for a few shows, my summer programming is erratic and I don't follow anything religiously. Sometimes I'm so bored by summer shows, I'll -- dare I say it -- turn off the television. Then I sit around and daydream about the new Harry Potter book or something. Yes. Summer TV is that bad. However, there are a few things that I'm currently looking forward to -- and not all of them are re-runs.

Flight of the Conchords: A few months ago I watched The Mighty Boosh for the first time and although I greatly enjoyed the random musical moments, there was something that didn't quite click with me. Then, I saw Flight of the Conchords' premiere online and I was immediately hooked. That's the way random musical moments should be done. They have managed to maintain a beautiful balance of comedy and song in their show, creating something that is both hysterically funny and tremendously catchy. I'm also a sucker for slightly geeky comedy folk rock (see: Jonathan Coulton), so this is right up my alley. Fun Fact: The scrawnier half of the Conchords duo is Figwit from the Lord of the Rings films. Figwit, I say!

Doctor Who: It wasn't until a few weeks ago that I realized that I've been subconsciously raiding the tenth Doctor's closet... My recently acquired brown pinstriped blazer, new cream-colored Converse Chuck Taylors, long trenchcoat, and multiple 3-D glasses are all straight from the TARDIS. I even got a new tie from the thrift store for no reason at all, I swear. After all that, it wouldn't be right for me not to continue watching the show. It's the least I can do after cramping the Doctor's style.

Mad Men: The manipulation and sneakiness involved in advertisements has always been a source of fascination for me. Following these same dark themes to the men and women behind the ads sounds promising and I'm looking forward to following the story. AMC's Hustle has never failed to be smart, slick and stylish, so I'm hoping that the channel will be able maintain that top quality with this series... without the help of the BBC.

Psych: This program still isn't as great as it could be, but I still find it entertaining enough to follow, especially during this period of "Well, what else am I going to watch?"

What Not to Wear (the noon re-runs, mind you): This is Summer. Summer means that my day starts around noon. I wake up, brush my teeth, grab some breakfast and watch Stacy London and Clinton Kelly bitch at poorly-dressed women. It's like my substitute for coffee. Sometimes if I wake up earlier than noon (heaven forfend), I watch The Price Is Right before switching over to What Not to Wear. And then I wonder what Stacy and Clinton would say about the Showcase Showdown granny with the "I HEART BOB" puff paint shirt.

Planet Earth: I didn't get around to watching this when it first aired, but I recently caught the first few episodes. One word: stunning. And breath-taking. Okay, so that's two words. I often like to keep my sketchbook open when I'm watching television, and I was amazed by how many pages I filled while watching Planet Earth. Each and every image is absolutely beautiful. I love well-shot documentaries, so I'm excited to go through the rest of this series.

The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and Late Night with Conan O'Brien: Bless their pretty little hearts for running year-round. No matter how crappy other shows may be during the day, I rest assured that I'll get at least a few laughs from Stewart, Colbert, or O'Brien.
