Former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather has some harsh words for the show and Katie Couric.
Rather was on MSNBC, talking to Joe Scarborough (he's in Imus' spot in the morning right now) via phone. Although he said that Couric is a nice person, he also said that the show has been "dumbing it down, tarting it up," and that they're really focusing too much on celebrity coverage now.
One can only assume that by "tarting it up" Rather is talking about ...Couric's legs? I mean, it's not like they have supermodels come out holding up big cards telling viewers what story is coming out next, so it must be that. As for dumbing it down, is it really dumbed down? I've watched the show and it seems to cover the big stories up front in a serious way, and it also covers the lighter stuff (as do Charles Gibson and Brian Williams on the other networks). Of course celeb coverage is excessive and that needs to be changed, but it's an across-the-board problem not just on CBS.
Is it because she's a woman and just doesn't have that problem? Hmmm ...Diane Sawyer is a woman and has anchored ABC World News several times. Is it because Couric is from a morning show and has no "gravitas?" Hmmm ...Charles Gibson is from Good Morning America. Is it a combo of the two? Or is it simply the fact that no matter what CBS does, because of the big lead that ABC and NBC have had for a while and the slow demise of network news in general, the ratings will never go up and this is how it will be from now on?
Update: CBS head Les Moonves calls Rather's remarks "sexist."

I've tried to watch Couric but I feel she'll break out into a lullabye song at any moment. I swear she speaks at a slower rate, (maybe what Rather alludes to in "dumbing it down").
I figured she was in trouble when she asked viewers "what should I sign off with" in her first week.

Do not misinterpret this post as a defense of CBS or its Evening News, but really ... who gives a f*** what Dan Rather thinks?

CBS is the most watched network in primetime and has been for many years now but are still last in the morning news shows, the evening news and late night shows. The opposite is for NBC. So the viewers clearly like something that the others don't have.

I'm gonig with Jim, Dan Rather is a dumbass that would still have the job if he didn't make up a news story. He worked for CBS and not Fox and CBS won't allow it.

I think Couric is too friendly for a news report. I want my news from someone who "tells it like it is" rather than somebody trying to comfort me. I feel like after every story Couric is going to pat my hand and tell me everything is going to be okay. Rather, Brokaw, Jennings, even Sawyer tell the news and thats the way its going to be, whether you like it or not. That's how I want the news.

I do agree with Dan Rather on the CBS Evening News bringing The Today Show infotainment mentality to evening news. I do like variety in my news but I don't want my intelligence insulted either. I am not a fan of Katie Couric either and wasn't crazy about her on The Today show. I liked when Bob Schiffer was doing the evening news and wish he would come back.

I dont watch the CBS Evening News because right when it turns on you gotta hear that guy saying "Cbs Evening News with Katie Couric" I swear when he says that whole line it sounds like hes sitting on a toilet constipated its quite disturbing. It would be nice if people would stop kissing network news butt and just start watching cable news which is 100x better and more informative of each and every story in the news....

I liked Bob Schiffer too. Wish they would bring him back. Don't care for Couric at all. For some reason, she annoys me?

I knew that CBS evening news would be a disaster when Couric took over the anchor position. Just another boring bleeding heart liberal who doesn't know how to present the news or what it's all about anyhow. It's not only her, all the news networks are biased, generally hate the US and in a word suck. Newsmax is the closest network to presenting unbiased and truthful reporting. R.L.F.

They are all dumbing down with the possible exception of News Hour with Jim Lehrer (PBS) and I am worried about them as they get more and more corporate sponsors. Even Keith Olbermann (MSNBC), for crying out loud, is doing more Paris Hilton and less brilliant editorials. Sad!

Couric is out of touch and she doesn't know how to report news. She should be working at Macys shoe dept.
I haven't watch CBS since Bob Schieffer left.

I used to like Dan Rather, but wasn't it his big mouth that got him into trouble in the first place? I do think a double standard is being applied to Katie Couric no matter what she does. People need to lighten up and just listen for the news stories.

I don't know where the other posters on this board have been the last 10 years, but NO ONE watches the news from the 3 ( big?) networks, let alone CBS.
I personally can't stand Dan Rather, but he is right on the money with his comments this time. Their audience shares are made up out of thin air just to get advertising dollars. The majority of people turn on the tv and go to fox or cnn, or msnbc when something is happening and you all know it.

Dan Rather dis-credited himself when he altered and took creative license to create "rather" that to "report" He violated the code ... he needs to bow out and remain silent and live a quite and peaceful life ... Katie will come into her own, the network needs to let her do her job and be Katie -she has the trust, talent, knowledge, courage, respect and honor.

Hard news on network TV? Doesn't exist anymore... So why pick on Katie? At least CBS isn't owned by a right-wing outfit like Fox or ABC (becoming Fox-Lite). Leave it to AOL to do a shallow piece on a huge problem - tarting up the news so the speak. (using "tart" figuratively as whores who sell out)

I don't like Katie Couric, didn't like her on the Today show either. I didn't like Dan Rather more. Katie, to me, shows her bias all too well, but at least she is somewhat honest. Dan Rather is dishonest, has been for many years. Of the three networks, I like Charlie Gibson the most, although I don't watch network news much. I prefer FOX and CNN. I don't think many people watch network news anymore, unless they don't have cable. Dan Rather sounds like a bitter man, but he took himself down, no one did it for him.
