Even though the Season 3 finale of the Sci Fi hit show Stargate Atlantis airs only in two weeks, cast and crew are already preparing Season 4. Writers have almost half the season written up, episodes are getting shot, and casting directors are working around the clock to find guest stars for the new season. Actually, the latter even found a new show regular in the person of Firefly's Jewel Staite.Spoilers about Staite's character and Season 4 after the jump.
Sci Fi Wire reports that Jewel Staite will play doctor Jennifer Keller, who is rumored to maybe get involved with one of the men and is said to become best buds with Samantha Carter. (For those who didn't know, SG-1's Amanda Tapping is joining Altantis.)
The article gives us a few spoilers about the upcoming season:
- Samantha Carter's move from SG-1 to Atlantis will not be easy. Fans may remember that Carter and McKay have a past. Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi tells Sci Fi Wire that there will be friction between the two characters but that they will try to be adults about it.
- McKay's interest in Carter will be dealt with in the beginning of the season.
- When Carter arrives expect her to go in military mode, especially since she'll outrank Lt. Col. Sheppard. [Edited to add: Carter will be full Col. when she joins Atlantis.]
- Mallozzi reveals that "each of the characters will have a story in the front half." He also adds that the series will be exploring more of the Replicators and that fans will learn more about the Wraith.

Does Carter actually out rank Shepard? I thought she was still a Lt. Col? I will freely admit I may have forgotten a promotion. I thought she still was the same rank as Cameron thus their shared command of SG-1.

In the article is says Carter will be a Colonel when she join Atlantis. And no she does not get promoted again on the show. I'm more interested in how that affects the two movies. but I have to admit I haven't been following up on it since I don't want to get too spoiled.

Totally read that article this morning and missed that line. Shame on me! Thank you Rita.
Ive seen all of both shows so the following is considered spoiler:
I think the first Stargate movie will take place between SG-1s finale and Atlantis premiere. IIRC, since the end of Atlantis we did not have any mention of when specifically it was taking place compared to the events in SG1 I think it is safe to assume that. Logically it works out:
1. Final episode of SG-1
2. SG-1 Movie (which looks to complete the Ori storyline)
3. Shortly thereafter the events at the end of Atlantis Season 3 occur.
4. Carter fresh off of helping defeat the Ori heads to help Atlantis in their time of need and ends up taking command of the station due to the fact that a more military presence will be needed.

also remember seniority is determined by rank AND time of service. So if shes been around longer even if the held the same rank she would still outrank her. Granted the fact that she comes in as a colonel has already been addressed but just a little fyi :P

Even if Carter and Sheppard are both Lt. Col. Carter has more time in rank so she would out rank him. My bet is they bump her to full Col. though.
SG and ranks are always a little weird. Take Jack's character. He was Col. for years then went from 1 to 2 stars in about a year.

Ahh, the 4th season. The one that is currently airing in other parts of the world and can be readily downloaded.
Stupid TV execs.
I have held off downloading Atlantis, but I will if I have to wait until Dec/Jan to watch it.

Adam, I think you mean the 3rd season (which is about to end in the US)
The 4th season is still in production and hasn't aired anywhere yet.

I think Sam get's a promotion after saving the Earth two more times in the movies.
So I would guess the movies take place before Atlantis.
Sam will also be running Atlantis if you watch the video. Which confuses me because I thought she was gonig to have her own ship. And her haircut sucks.
And it will be interesting to see if they make more SG-1 movies about how they handle things.

let's just hope that the movies have plot lines for the movies that start and end there and the seasons carry through with thematic storytellign, not one offs to pissant villages with {insert new evil dudes} suddenly taking over and {insert old evil dudes} reoccuring somewhere on Earth.

Glad to see Jewel picked up as a regular. I was wondering if that would happen since she'd only been announced as a guest star up to now.
Apparently Beckett's return is supposed to pave the way for a possible full-time return for the character down the road.

I wish they'd stay away from the shipperin', pairing off the new cast memeber with someone as soon as she's arrived. The fun thing about Atlantis is that they flirt with relationships but they keep the subjects pretty much out of any kind of major personal drama.

KEVIN GIBBS: Sci Fi hasn't set the premiere date yet. It'll more than likely be early Winter 2008 but can be late Fall 2007.
