According to the film site, IESB, the cast and crew of Battlestar Galactica would really like to do a movie. Only, it's not up to them. It's not even up to NBC/Universal. The permission for doing a movie must first come from the original series creator, Glen Larson. He's the guy who created the series in the 1970s.IESB says Larson hasn't been thrilled with the current adaptation of Battlestar Galactica, so getting his permission to make a movie might be really, really difficult. Apparently he has already made things slightly difficult for the current run of BSG. Since he holds the movie rights to the series, SciFi's plan to create a stand-alone movie about the Pegasus had to be altered a bit. Instead of going straight to DVD, the two-episode feature will have to air on television first.
In interviews with the website, BSG producer David Eick mentions that he has "extended an olive branch" to Larson and actor Jamie Bamber flat-out begs Larson to let them do a big screen flick.
Would you like a BSG movie? I surely would. I know I'll miss these characters terribly once the series is over.

If the series has an honest-to-goodness ending -- say, more than a cut to black -- what would the movie be about? Would it have to be placed somewhere between episodes in the timeline?

Depends on how the show ends. If what RDM stated last week is true, then the end of the show will be the end of the story and there won't be any room for movies.
Interesting how Glen Larson has rumored issues with the show yet he still cashes his check and gets his "creative consultant" credit up on every episode.

I'm happy w/a made for TV movie. The special effects and quality of the show has been incredible. I don't want to pay $10/person to go see in a theater what I could see on TV.

Whatever happened to the Caprica spinoff series that they were going to make? I thought that was a done deal.

It would be relatively easy to make a movie because ti does not have to cotinue the story. It could go back b4 the beginning of the current series.
I certainly agree that Larson should take the money and move on. Sure he created the original series and gets paid for every new ep, buyt therein the association ends creatively. He should allow fans of BSG to enjoy the current version.

Lately I have been watching original Battlestar Galactica episodes on Ion. I have been enjoying them plenty.
When I can catch them that is. The idiots schedule the show from six to eight pm on Sunday.
I say Glen Larson has the right to do what he wants with all this, and haters can go screw.

RadioScott, the Caprica prequel is effectively shelved at the moment. Season 3 ratings didn't quite show that a second series could be effective. SciFi still has the option to produce it but at this point I do not see it happening. Current rumor states that some backplots from Caprica will make its way into flashbacks during the 2 hour Pegasus movie in the fall.

As much as I enjoy this series, would there be a enough profitability in making a Battlestar movie. Look at the experience of Firefly/Serenity; another great series enjoyed by a small audience, turned into a rather good movie, which tanked at the box office (less than $40 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo). Battlestar draws what, a couple million viewers a week (on a good week)? Firefly probably drew two to three times that and still was a failure (although it could have made more money on DVD, I don't really know). I would much rather have the series end on a good note than leave me hanging waiting for the possibility -- the possibility! -- the moneychangers at NBC/Universal will make a movie. Granted there cold be some interesting ideas for a movie, not the least of which is how this group integrates into Earth society, what will happen with the Cylons, and will they attempt to do to Earth what they did to the colonies. On a side note: Cylons would probably find a welcome home among the religous fanatics of our planet. Still, I would much rather see the series end with some sort of closure on the Earth issue than leave me hanging on the hopes there might be a movie.

The movie is a terrible idea and will probably make less money than Serenity.
And where did this talk of a movie come from? Last week it was "The ending will be the ending" and now they want a movie.
If anything a miniseries should end the show, not a movie. Bad idea.

A movie sounds neat. I'm not assuming it will have anything to do with the current storyline though. I have faith that it will end after the next season and need no real tidying up.
Since Pegasus survived, a BSG movie might be "Galactica in name only" and focus on other ships in the BSG universe. Or even focus on the original human-cyclon war. I just want more of it!

I remember back during the original run when my Mormon friends told me all about the show's inferences to certain doctrines in their religion since Larson was Mormon. Is he not happy with the direction in the show that way?

A BSG movie would do much better than Serenity... Serenity was so obscure that most people haven't heard of it... BSG is marketed cross-network, in magazines, hell, on Yahoo's front page itself. Couple that with shots of Six and you've got the sex appeal for the broader audience.
BSG would do a lot better if NBC put it on their network instead of pigeonholing it on SciFi, a network that most people think of as a network filled with Star Trek, Sliders and Twilight Zone.
All I know is, I can't get enough of Bear McCreary's soundtracks. Anything that gets some more BSG music love is good for me!

You know, instead of a movie, why not negotiate with digital theaters in large markets to show the entire series on a weekly basis, like the old days of the cinema? You don't need another product. I would pay money to go see the entire run on the big screen, and it would be a ton of fun.

Apparently the people who visit this site don't read the original post or the previous post that it was linked to. The movie that is being referred to is the Pegasus movie. The original plan was release the movie to DVD in the Fall of 2007. However, due to rights the "movie" will air on Sci-Fi first before heading to DVD (making it part of the television series versus being a standalone movie). Additionally, people who actually watch the show realize that the Pegasus was destroyed in episode 3.04, thus the plot line would ultimately have to be a flashback regardless of whether it airs this Fall or after the series is over. The two hour episode airs in November: http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=2&id=41709

A movie after the series has ended with the Galectica reaching Earth? Hmmm...
I thinking an "Alien Nation" remake with Cylon's instead of the aliens from that Movie/TV series. Eh, they could probably pull it off.

Bradley, you apparently didn't read all of the the article that was linked to. Yes, the proof of this rights issue with Larson is apparent because of the upcoming DVD release but the article speculates on a future cinematic film as well.

Bradley: Apparently someone else can't read the OP either,
"In interviews with the website, BSG producer David Eick mentions that he has "extended an olive branch" to Larson and actor Jamie Bamber flat-out begs Larson to let them do a big screen flick."
This post is specifically talking about a feature movie possiblity, while discussing the Pegasus project.
Just sayin'...
Chris: I agree with you in that BSG probably today has more mainstream buzz than Firefly did. However, still probably not enough to justify a movie.
Jimmy: Thanks for being the first to bring up Firefly, opening the door for Akbar to level that movie (once again).
David: I think its more the fans and the media tha continue to bring up movie possiblities than it is the cast/crew trying to generate buzz.
Akbar: I'm with you... I think RDM and Eick want to end the show on a final note, but they continue to get hounded about a movie. If they haven't gotten the deal (for a movie) done by the end of the run, then by god give us a satisfying ending.
Oh yeah, and Larson is a doucebag. For what its worth. I can see taking the paychecks, but can you tell me in what way he doesn't like the direction of the show? Yeah, Adam West's Batman has its place in pop culture history, but Christian Bale's is so much more relevant in today's climate.

Dorv, You know I totally almost did bring up a few points to counter Jimmy's mentioning of Serenity but I figured you guys have seen me bitch about that enough ;)
However that does lead me to one point. Why is it that so many people feel that shows need to jump to a different medium to continue? And especially the TV to Cinema jump? Why can't an effective story be told in one medium and stick to it?
