It's official: Isaiah Washington isn't coming back to Grey's Anatomy.According to E! Online (who confirmed the story with ABC Television Studios), Washington, who portrayed Dr. Preston Burke, was informed yesterday that his contract will not be renewed. The actor's statement was succinct: "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore."
Recall that Washington caused an uproar around the Grey's set and in the entertainment industry when he called co-star T.R. Knight a "faggot" late last year. Knight publicly came out of the closet after the incident, and Washington had to spend the rest of the season in damage control, going to "rehab" and meeting with representatives from GLAAD, among other forms of restitution. Apparently that incident, combined with an overall difficult attitude, sealed Washington's fate.

Grey's Anatomy has just as much drama behind the camera as it does it front of it.

They just sealed it for me. I will not be returning to GA this fall. The season finale left me flat and I didn't care to see any of the cliffhangers resolved. Now they fire the best character left on the program (Addison was the best). Good riddance.

So all you people who got all upset because the man made a mistake... I hope you are feel a lot better now.
This would have been a lot better IF they did it when it first came down, not now.
Talk about people being closed minded. Sheesh!

First let me just say that I consider myself to be a very thick-skinned individual and I don't believe in censorship.
That being said, I don't think it was necessary for you to type out the insult. I believe the reason and emotion behind words are more important than the words themselves, and in this case I think it's obvious that you included it as part of an objective report. At the same time, it's still a little jarring to read.
I understand that what I'm saying may not make sense, but I guess what I'm really trying to get across is the point that even when people use that word in a non-hateful manner, it still causes a brief reflex of defenisveness and anger.
Should that word be banned? No, of course not. No words should. But I think that it could have avoided and saved me a couple fleeting milli-seconds of grief.

This really sucks, I loved Burke's character and I thought he played a very central role to the show. Now that Isiah and Kate Walsh are gone, Grey's has taken two pretty major hits.
I agree that the finale of this season was really not too good, and didn't keep me salivating as much as last yr's Denny/McDreamy v McVet finale. But I still trust this show to be snappy, witty and unique, and even without Isiah, I think Shonda Rhimes can get it done.
Now if she would only drop the whole Gizzie thing, then we'd be rolling...

A "mistake" - using racist or homophobic or sexist words to express someone's beliefs are hardly a "mistake" - people don't express thoughts/words if there isn't some basis for them - this "mistake" stuff is bizarre.
I believe he is undoubtedly a homophobe who couldn't contain himself and revealed that side of him - all the apologizing blather and PSA that followed by him was only his effort to keep his job and at the behest of the show.
People say what they believe - and there are consequences when you hurt someone and/or create a hostile work environment. I'm guessing they waited until now to boot him out so they wouldn't have to face a lawsuit by firing him when he was still on contract.
Not renewing his contract is their choice and probably won't now face a lawsuit from him.
Good riddance.

First off, Kate Walsh did a fine job on her new pilot, so I'm looking forward to that spinoff. (there's plenty of great characters on GA to still be attracted to it.) Second of all, I don't understand how mainstream America can live their double-standard lives: i.e. condemning stars for having flaws and making mistakes, all the while living like trailer trash in their own lives.

So I guess he won't be back part time like what I heard on the radio the other day.

Now I can be sure to return to Grey's next season. Regardless of all the stuff going on in the set, his character never set right with me, and the last season Shonda and the writing staff did nothing to change my mind. I absolutely hated Burke consumed by all that marriage nonsense.
WTF, "mad as hell"? Anger management, anyone?

I'd miss the character of Burke, but for me, it was about the word he used, that was no reason for it.
And if someone had called him the N word he would have asked for that they be fired from the show, and Al Shaprton would have agreed and fought for it all over the TV. No matter if it was Patrick Dempsey or Kate Walsh that did it.
This is the world we live in, you can't use hateful words like that when you're a public firgure and not expect fall out, no matter who you are, it would have been a double standard if he was allowed to return to the show.
And again it's a shame that he has to leave the show, but there are consquences, no matter how severe others think they are.

I'm mad as hell too. I agree with Dave and RedStarRevolution about Burke being one of the best characters they had. I'll probably stick around for Bailey and Cristina, but even the latter I'm not sure I'll enjoy as much without Burke.

I bet they bring in Brook Smith, aka Dr Hahn, the other heart specialist from the rival hospital. She'd really turn that place upside down.

Note to all: Burke was a character, and the person who played him is not Burke. The character never showed any such flaw, and I enjoyed his portrayal as done by Isiah Washington. The thing about acting is that we are not supposed to be watching the person who stars in the role, but the part they are being payed to play.
Tom Cruise drives me nuts and I wouldn't want to be his friend, but I love watching his movies. I guess I'm one of the few left who can separate fiction from reality. Go me!!

Isiah Washington should be mad, he continued to do a great job while people like TR Knight and Katherine Heigl are slacking.

Isiah's comment is a a famous line from the movie "Network." He was trying to be funny...I think.

I don't think you can call it a mistake when he intially tried to joke it off and even denied it happened, then repeated it. And I don't think he was let go because of the insult per se, it was the dissension with the rest of the cast.
As I recall, the initial comment was not directed at Knight; he was having words with Dempsey and then said something like, "I'm not your bitch, like that f----t." Then they had to be physically restrained when Dempsey went for him. Initially it wasn't even clear to whom he was referring.
But the comments made by other cast members indicate that relations were strained after that, expecially because his attitude wasn't very conciliatory. He has a right to his opinions, but there's a need for civility in the workplace.
