Julia will have her review of the new HBO series John From Cincinnati when it premieres after the Sopranos finale on June 10, but San Francisco Chronicle critic Tim Goodman has seen the first three episodes, and he's not impressed. In fact, he's depressed.
Goodman says that the heads of fans of David Milch's other show, Deadwood, will "explode" when they see this, that they would get rid of Deadwood just to air this show. He won't have his full review 'til Sunday, but on his blog, Goodman says that HBO made "a total blunder" and that the show is just "a total mess." Wow, I guess we'll have to wait for his full review to find out what he really thinks.
As I said yesterday, I'm going to give it a shot. I mean, the previews are just so bizarre that you have to check it out.

Really bad or The Comeback/Lucky Louie bad? Those shows were down right painful to watch.

Because it's HBO, you automatically have to check out everything they offer... but those days are waning with them stretching the empty spaces between shows that rule and filling them with shows that don't rule. As it is, they didn't even offer a "2nd half hour" after Entourage this past run.
Ask me, I'd take 'Arli$$' or '1st and Ten' back in a heartbeat. At least you knew what to expect and there was an occasional boob.

David Milch is one of those people whose work is so interesting and entertaining that I feel compelled to watch it. "John From Cincinnati" has a premise that sounds iffy at best, but knowing that Milch is behind it has me determined to try it, despite my doubts. That's not to say that it won't be bad -- I feel the same way about Aaron Sorkin and "Studio 60" has me cringing at its clunkiness far too often -- but I'm encouraged whenever someone with a lot of weight in the industry tries something different rather than sitting back and taking a cushy executive producer credit on the latest version of "Lawyer Cop, M.D.".

This makes me laugh... when people think the first episodes fould have a resolution. Shows like this and Deadwood are supposed to make a viewer think... but apparently some people are allerigic to thinking and push intelligent shows like these away.
