Not too long ago, Anna told you that former Spice Girl and wife of soccer star David Beckham, Victoria Beckham, would be starring in a reality series on NBC that would follow her and her husband as they make their move to the United States.
Well, the series is still happening, except it won't be a series, it'll be a primetime special. All of this is merely speculation at this point, and NBC hasn't made any comment one way or the other. However, like Anna, I haven't quite figured out what it is about this series/special that's supposed to attract people, especially Americans. I think whatever mainstream infatuation we had with Posh Spice has long since gone away, and while David Beckham is no doubt a superstar in his own right, soccer just isn't that popular here. That's not a slight against the sport itself, I'm merely pointing out that it's unclear exactly who this series/special is trying to attract.
Of course, surprises are always nice, so maybe after this hits TV screens I'll be coming back on this blog and telling everyone how great it is.

Soccer is a lame sport, the fighting beffore and after each game is much more exciting.
And I guess the 5 people in America that like soccer will watch it. And that's higher ratings than NBC normally gets.

Wow an enlightened opinion there, never mind the fact that football(soccer) is the most watched sport in the world. But hey anything that isnt big in the USA is just completley irrelevant anyway. Excuse me while i go back to watching large overpaid men in huge amounts of protetcive gear stand around so i can watch some commercials every 5 minutes.

anyway, there's something that intrigues a lot of people about soccer. it's the new sport that the parents don't get.. sort of like skateboarding was a while back.
Soccer is a sport on the rise, with many more than 5 fans in the US who are looking for more quality and tv coverage of their sport here, and if NBC actually plays it right a lot of people beyond these fans could tune in to watch.
perhaps now that it's a special, the producers will actually go into more depth and not just create another superficial reality-tv-esque overview of the Beckhams' social lives. there are deeper issues than that involved here. Foremost, there's the enigma of a world-class player slumming it in the MLS that, if probed, could make it a genuinely interesting program beyond it's soccer-related context.
if NBC is looking for an angle to hook non-soccer fans (the majority audience in this case ) then they should play on this. give the promotional campaign (NBC does remember what those are, right?) a sort of voyeuristic quality: what's this huge sport and it's most famous player's arrival here all about?
