This afternoon I listened in on a conference call with Battlestar Galactica Executive Producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, announcing news regarding the series' fourth season. Just as mentioned earlier in the month -- and as many had already figured out -- the forthcoming season of the show will be the series' last.Highlights from the call after the jump.
- The decision to end after season four needed to be a collective one, which would be why there was some disconnect with prior reports.
- The season opener will not be connected to how the third season ended, not picking up after the cliffhanger but instead going back a bit in time a season or two ago (perhaps into the second season), connecting events there with what will happen in season four.
- Another project of Eick's, Them, may be up for a mid-season show, which will feature Tricia Helfer at least in some capacity.
- The question of Caprica was brought up, which would have taken us back to the beginning of the Cylons' existence. They indicated there's definitely the interest there to make the show a reality. They also say that it will have the same sort of built-in endpoint like Battlestar has.
- Both guys feel that they will have told the story they wanted to tell once the next season concludes.
- Eick jokingly called the Lost folks "thieves in the night" for their use of the flash-forward in the season finale.
- I asked both guys about whether or not we'll see what Earth is like once Galactica arrives there, but they were understandably vague there. Moore says we'll see "a little more" of Earth next season, but since they haven't yet written the season ender, they're just not sure what we'll see.
- I also asked if we'll see Lucy Lawless at all this season, and they say there are talks there but nothing definitive.
- I also asked if Ron is planning to do any podcasts this summer, and he can only say that he's going to try.
- Ron says that The Thing movie remake is still being worked on. Damn, that's the first I'd heard of that. Cool!
- Later on in the fourth season it will be further explained why 'All Along The Watchtower' is significant. They also reveal that originally they were going to have the Simon & Garfunkel song 'America' instead.
The next (and final) season of Galactica comes in November with an episode entitled "Razor," which will be an extended two-hour episode, with the rest of the season continuing beginning in early 2008.

"Thieves in the night"
Yep. While we see the decline of one great show (Lost), we will see another show that will end when and how it should (Galactica).

Actually, when I saw the flash-forward in Lost, I thought of Alias, not BSG.

Could'nt have said it better aaron. It's better to have 4 good seasons then 7+ mixed ones. (X-Files)

Whats this about The Thing remake? How exactly is RDM involved?
I don't quite think that link to movie web is correct.

22 more episodes sounds good enough...especially when you consider the fact that the average cable show is ~12 episodes a season.

RDM is writing "The Thing," along with "I, Robot 2." That might mean less involvement from him this season on BSG.

They are making an "I, Robot 2"?!?! Dear god....
Anyways I think the biggest news is....
"Later on the fourth season it will be further explained why 'All Along The Watchtower' is significant. The also reveal that originally they were going to have the Simon & Garfunkel song 'America' instead."
So America is real in the BSG universe because they were thinking about the song. That's interesting.

I dont understand why ANY of Carpenters films need to be remade (all of the ones so far have been terrible) but The Thing? Even with RDM's awesome touch to it you can't mess with how scary and great the original was. I don't know what I will do if anyone ever thinks about trying to remake Big Trouble in Little China.
I wouldnt worry about RDM not being as involved with the show. I think his level will be about the same which is just fine as season 3. He does alot of work on the show remotely and others run the day to day stuff in the studio.
As for the thought of using "America" instead of "...Watchtower" I wouldn't read too much into that. Just chalk it up with the same "universal inspiration" reasoning that was given for using the Dylan song.

Definitely sad, as BSG has been so good. But I'll take quality over quantity and fours isn't a bad run.
BTW, Carpenter's The Thing was also a remake. The original was made in 1951 and is quite good also. I'd love to see RDMs take on it.

That should have said four years isn't a bad run.

While John Carpenters "The Thing" is a remake, it is a hell of alot closer to the original source material so I consider it the better film and stands on its own.

A little sad about the fourth season being the last but, honestly, this is a closed-end storyline. I'm glad they're not going to milk it for a few extra years, honestly, and look forward to when I'll have the whole collection on disc to watch from start to finish.
My only complaint -- and this is a sideswipe -- is that I have to wait so damn long for the Season 3 DVD set to come out. I missed pretty much the entire second half of the season and was looking forward to a late-spring DVD release to catch up.
(FWIW, I would just go and buy the whole season from the iTunes Store but being slightly hearing impaired I rely on the captions in the broadcast and on the DVDs.)
And one more moment for big kudos to Bear McCreary. The GALACTICA soundtracks (Seasons 1 and 2 only thus far; c'mon Season 3 CD) have been some of the best soundtrack music I've ever had the pleasure of hearing.

Akbar: I must agree with you there (about "The Thing" remake). It (IMO) was vastly superior to the original and was a nail-biter all the way through. I am not impling you regard it as highly as I, but as you mention, it definately stands on its own merits.

I was going to come on and leave my comments about this announcement, but I just don't think that there is any way to follow that comment with anything that will register.

Akbar: To follow up on on my earlier comment on "The Thing" remake. I think the original movie had a longer title but I'm not sure what it entailed.
This new format on the site had me a little confused briefly, for I accidently signed on with my full name last time. Got it now though. I have been reading what everyone probably knows by now that the two hour BSG movie will be a LOT about the Pegusus, flashing back to about mid-way through the second season. An important new character will be introduced. Tim-1

LOST is definitely NOT declining! the finale was rated at #6 which shows the HUGE potential of the show.
The reason the ratings do not reflect its popularity is due to the fact that this type of show is usually recorded and watched later.
ppl love to watch it without ads, and so that they can rewind to spot clues etc..
its definitely NOT declining!

thieves in the night? When did BSG do a flash forward? Did I miss something?

BSG has not really done a flash forward per se but the end of season 2 jumping forward a year is what they were referring to.
For the record, Moore and Eick were totally joking around about this whole thing.
