Well, it was fun while it lasted.
According to UK tabloid The Sun the newest incarnation of Doctor Who, which has been a hit both in the UK and here in North America, will be ending its run after the fourth series finishes up next year. The decision to end it didn't come from executives over at BBC1. Rather, it came from Executive Producer Russell T. Davies, the man who relaunched the adventures of the good Doctor back in 2006.
According to The Sun article Davies wants to concentrate on other projects. So, he's decided to end the show while it's still on top in the ratings (the show is watched by 8 million viewers in the UK each week). David Tennant, who has portrayed the Doctor since the second series, has signed on to continue playing the role through the end of the series.

Oh come on. At check your source. It's THE SUN, for crying out loud. The same tabloid that the BBC just denounced with the latest rumor about Martha, calling it "absolute rubbish".

The BBC owns Who, not Davies.
If nothing else, relabel this as a rumor and reference the MediaGuardian report that attempts to refute it.

The Sun occasionally gets things right, but mostly they talk complete and utter bollocks. Dr Who has been around long before Davis and will last long after him too, so even if he does leave then (which seems possibly the only legitimate part of the story), it will just get new blood in. By it's very nature Who survives changes, be it cast or crew... it'll keep going as long as people want to watch it (hell, it managed a good 20-odd years first time round before it the drop in quality, lack of ideas, and a head of entertainment who hated it got it cancelled).
Like Brian said, the BBC own Dr Who and currently, thanks to Who, they own Saturday night. I suspect their POV on this is "We like Saturday night, in fact we like it so much, we think we'll keep it". By it's very nature Who survives changes, be it cast or crew... it'll keep going as long as people want to watch it (hell, it managed a good 20-odd years first time round before it the drop in quality, lack of ideas, and a head of entertainment who hated it got it cancelled).

Yeah what the other two people, it's not his show, he can leave and the BBC will obviously continue it.
That said they have to find one hell of a person because the Doctor Who now is amazing and the planning and arcs of each season are wonderful.

RTD leaving the show after season 4? Sure, I can buy that. He has been mentioning that as a possibility for some time now.
The BBC allowing who to finish? Highly doubt it. Like Blackgem mentioned, the BBC owns saturday night with Doctor Who. Getting rid of it would be suicide.

This is the same paper that said that Freema was getting sacked, but everyone came out and said that wasn't true.
From Outpost Gallifrey, YESTERDAY:
"MediaGuardian.co.uk, the media news-focused section of The Guardian newspaper's website, has today run a story (subscription link) by reporter Ben Dowell speculating about the possible future of Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies.
The piece, in reponse to a story published in this morning's edition of the tabloid newspaper The Sun, contains a quote from an unnamed "BBC drama spokeswoman", stating that: "Discussions have not begun so we cannot say if Russell will be involved or not" with Doctor Who beyond the end of the fourth series in 2008.
However, the report specifically denies The Sun's story that Davies and other staff on the show have a plan to end the programme at the conclusion of the fourth series. MediaGuardian quotes another source, a similarly unnamed "senior BBC Wales drama source", as telling them that:
"Russell has always said that he wouldn't be with the show forever and he has made no secret that the hours are quite exhausting... But there isn't any way it would be axed even if he left. He loves the show and he does feel that maybe it would benefit from some new blood."
The MediaGuardian states that "if Mr Davies does leave Doctor Who, the BBC will want to keep such a popular show going by bringing in a new executive producer to take over his creative responsibilities.""

Consider the source. The Sun probably has a track record of being right about 5% of the time. At least have the decency to put a question mark in the title of the post. This is pure speculation on the part of a tabloid designed to sell papers, nothing more.

Along with what #'s 1,3 and 5, I think you really need to do a correction to this story, even Slashdot scooped you and subsequently retracted their mistake: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/05/31/1314230
Also, as long as you're printing Tabloid stories, I have this great article on Batboy from the Weekly World News if you're interested. ;)

No way Who would end just because Russell T Davis leaves! Like the other posters have said, BBC owns the series. It was around before him and no doubt will last beyond him. The series is a hit, here and in the UK, there's no way BBC would end the show.

OMG you cannot be serious! This is the stupidest comment/rumour i have ever heard! Why would Doctor Who, the longest running sci-fi series EVER, end just because their director leaves! RTD is an awesome director and all but if he wants to leave for good and bring the entire series that has been running for about 64 years, I think that we can easily find a better director.

This isn't true. In no way shape or form. Not even Davies has said this. At the end of Season 3, he said, "We wanted to leave the Master storyline open so future production teams can use him if they want." He said the same about Rose. If future production teams want to bring her back, they have the ability because of how they've left it. RTD has acknowledged he won't be around forever, but the show will continue after him with other teams.
I wonder why so many people want to leave though. They'll have to be careful. Three more regenerations and the Doctor is dead. Only three more actors left, and David Tennant is rumoured to be on the way out after the next series.

Amen to that. Heck they can all leave if they want to. Get a new doctor, get new companions. Hell I love David Tennant, but I wouldn't let the show changing keep me from watching it. I am a die hard Who fan. When most girls my age were lusting after Tom Cruise, I wanted Tom Baker! so RAWR! and Long live The Doctor! (Well, Ok I'd be seriously sad, David IS the best Doctor I think so far, and I would be ecstatic to see him and his "Rose" reunited, but Who should live on regardless. As long as the writing is good, there will always be Who fans.

This is complete BS.
Doctor Who is getting a full 2008 series, with christmas special. then as RT is "Scaling Down" his Doctor Who involvement there are only going to be 3 x 1 hour specials in 2009 + a christmas ep, then back to a full series of 13 episodes for 2010.

Dr Who is a fantastic money spinner. Just think of the revenue from merchandising and exports.
Of course they wont give it up...... be daft to!

I always wonder where these folks get their information from. The BBC production is committed to keeping their flagship TV program on the air in 2010 and beyond that mark. It's the same about rumors leading the notion taht David Tennant is leaving the show, no thanks to his co-worker who should check her brain first. Tennant has dimissed the rumors of leaving the show after his fourth year and will be around for a while. Those are his own words. People need to make sure to get their information correct before getting it out to the public. Verify the facts. That's the #1 rule in something like the newspaper business.

Here in my house we all love Dr.Who and miss him on what we call here in the USA "Sci-Fi Friday". They keep cancelling shows or airing very few episodes with huge gaps of nothing. My question is.....When in 2008 will we see Dr.Who again??, here, on the Sci-Fi Channel??

I Heard (A While Back In 2007) They Would Air 2008 Then Take A Year Off (2009) & Be Back In 2010 With Season 5. Is This Still Accurate?
