(S03E01) If the May sweeps are over and a new American Idol has been crowned, it must mean it's time for another season of So You Think You Can Dance. Given its heritage, I usually think of the show as American Idol's younger sibling. It is never going to get Idol numbers, but it works hard to try and live up to the example that its big brother has set. The show also gains a lot in being able to build on what is already a successful format. Unfortunately, the show also suffers from some of the problems that Idol has, as was evidenced in this first episode of season three. The Idol audition episodes always make me wonder if people really do tune in to see the horrible performers. Would the ratings be any less if the focus was switched more to the people with an actual shot in the competition? Or perhaps, would they possibly be even better? After the New York auditions, I'm left wondering that same things about SYTYCD.
Kicking off in New York, the familiar faces are back. Cat Deeley is handling hosting duties. Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy resume their posts at the judges table. And Dan Karaty is along as the third judge in the opening round. They had quite a turnout, with performers from a variety of disciplines, with a wide array of abilities. Let's break the episode down in three parts, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
The Good
With 59 people getting tickets to the next round in Las Vegas, there were certainly some good performances to be had. There were also some good personal stories to go along with it. I think my favorite of those was Heather Zampier. Coming back from two hip surgeries to fix a bone spur, the tattooed Heather is easy to root for. She's cute, and very likable, and really showed some talent in her audition. Dan said that there was a fire as soon as she hit the stage.
A close second in the human interest category was Hannah Lee. We got to see video from a wedding she attended in Israel where the floor collapsed and a roomful of people fell some three stories. It was shocking footage, and Hannah has had to battle back from a lot of injuries as a result. Her performance wasn't great, but it showed potential. She didn't get a ticket to the next round right away, but was invited back for the choreography segment of the audition. There, she passed, and will be moving on.
It was a close call, trying to decide what was my favorite dance performance of the night. In the end I'm giving the nod to Faina Savich. Her brother Stanislav, from season two, was on hand to dance with her and they put on quite a show. Faina has the total package and could be an early contender.
Also in the running for best of the night were Pasha Kovalev and Anya Farnis. Another ballroom pair that really shined. Very intricate, and very polished. After their performance Nigel said, "That was hot." I completely agree. They will be joined in Las Vegas by a different kind of pair, student and teacher. Katherine Watts and Ashley Keegan have a cute story. Katherine has been Ashley's teacher for the past six years. I liked Katherine right away when she told the camera that Ashley was actually better than she was.
She was right, Ashley was better. Her audition was excellent. Nigel remarked that she has all of the qualities they are looking for in a dancer. Katherine still did alright for herself though. With a performance that the judges praised for great technique she joined her student on the list of contestants moving on to the next round.
The Bad
It was pretty clear that we were going to get a number of bad performances right from the get go when we saw Jessica Diaz. I was completely confused by her dance, and more so by her explanation. It had something to do with her being Jesus, who had lost his crown. Nigel was also flummoxed by it and asked, "What planet are you from?" Her response, "New York."
Jenna Dejosia had a tough time with the judges as well. She talked about the various kinds of dance she does in the interview, but the audition didn't live up to it. Dan didn't think she had been taught the proper way to break. Mary said she didn't have the endurance for the competition. And Nigel, he got sidetracked by Jenna saying that she teaches dance to children. He didn't like that at all. You kind of had to feel bad for her as she left in tears, right up to the moment where she started swearing at the camera. Like big brother Idol, there's one every year.
Carmen Lugo and Joel Bernabel were very similar to Jenna in their performance. Coming in you thought that maybe they would surprise you. There was just enough shown in the interview segments to think there might really be something there. When they did audition, it just wasn't up to the standard that had been set. Joel came across rather oddly in the interviews I thought, and it seems like a good think that the two are not dating any more.
I'm putting Jamal Weaver and Earnest Phillips in the bad section for two different reasons. Earnest gets lumped in here because he didn't make it through to the next round. I did think his performance was very entertaining though. I suspect that he just didn't measure up when he was moved to the choreography round, although they never really told us why he was passed over. Jamal on the other hand, did make it through to Las Vegas, but I still haven't figured out why. Entertaining, maybe, but he's really not a good dancer.
Speaking of not a good dancer, we have Dancing Derrick. This was another one where the interview segments showed just enough that it looked like he might have a shot. The actual performance though, was chaotic. It was like an epileptic seizure with rhythm. The judges weren't impressed and sent him home. That is, after he saw the paramedics and got some oxygen. How weird was that, after his performance? He was dripping sweat and couldn't talk. Very strange all around.
The Ugly
Sex is back, and if you are like me, you have to be asking, "Why?" I didn't think this whole bit was that funny once, so I don't really see the reason to do it again. You know the drill, very weird, maybe even creepy, guy that can't dance takes up a big chunk of the show. They even got his mother in on the act as she took Nigel to task for trying to crush David's dream.
And that gets to what was the really ugly part of the show. Nigel called David out, telling him that he was being rude to all of the good dancers by being up there, insinuating that he could be one of them. That sound you heard was all the glass shattering as Nigel threw his stones. If you want to look at it that way, he's the producer that is relegating talented dancers to a 30 second spot counting off various dance moves, while giving huge segments of the show to Dancing Derrick, Jamal, and Sex. Fans of the show are already talking about Jaimie Goodwin and Danny Tidwell, but the vast majority of people don't even know that they are in the competition yet.
I really do like the show. It's perfect television for the summer season, and I'm very much looking forward to the actual competition once we get through the auditions. But at this point in the game, the show is held back by what I think is a misguided notion that people would rather see the joke contestants just showing up on a lark instead of getting an early look at some of the contenders. A rough start to the season, but the great performances of those that made it into the good section of the post are evidence that there are plenty of good episodes to come.

I'll watch, but I have lots of questions about who they let go thru. I know a guy who tried out in Atlanta and he did not get selected to go to Vegas. He has been senior Dancer of the Year for Joe Tremaine and won in major dance competitions. He is a very technical dancer and yet was not allowed to go thru. Very strange.

They don't give a shit if you can dance, they care if you can learn how to dance in different ways. You can win all the awards you like but they are looknig for something and it's not how many awards or ribbons you have won.
Last night the big guy and his little friend danced. They then told the big guy to dance some swing. At the end of the day the little better dancer didn't make it but the bad big guy did. That's because the big guy had personality and showed he could learn the moves.

Yea, I definitely want to some more of Jamal (the big guy). That was my biggest laugh all week when he performed his swing dance with his buddy. Nothing is going to top that for me this week.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!!!! I'm BEGGING you, Brett!!! I cannot, simply cannot bear another reality show in which a favored contestant is referred to as "THE TOTAL PACKAGE."
We heard this ad nauseum with Jordin Sparks on American Idol, and now, with just one show, Faina Savich has been anointed "the total package." I can't go through another season hearing this phrase again or I'll go mad.
I can't go on!!!!!

I started watching this last season and was immediately hooked. Of course that had alot to do with who was chosen to be in the Top 24. I could tell as soon as Ashley danced last night that she will be in the Top 24. She reminded me of the dancers last season and she has the "look" they go for on this show.
I'm not big on the audition shows for Idol or SYTYCD. This is when I'm glad I have a Tivo and when they get to the bad dancers I can fast forward. I did think it was funny that Nigel actually tried not to be mean only to have that last maybe a day. I did adore Jamal and the swing dance. He was so funny when he said he was waiting for the "duh duh duh duh duh" part of the song. Considering he had just the day to find a partner and come up with a routine, he did a great job and showed promise. Not sure he deserves Las Vegas but he was better than his buddy. He's someone people will tune back in to see so that's what the producers want.
I hope they give us an update on last years contestants.... besides sex that is.

Who else is sooo happy that AI is over and SYTYCD is on? Don't get me wrong, I like AI, but this season was a let down for a number of reasons...
Anyway, I would like to first say that Blake should have won the first season of SYTYCD, he was better than Nick, but Nick was nicer. I think people were just put out by Blake's attitude, but hey he had moves behind his confidence and Dan Karaty IS a butthead and Blake IS better than him, and Dan probably WAS jealous!!
Travis totally should have won over Benji last season, because he was a better dancer, however, I don't know how many of you out there have been watching since the beginning, but the first season they said they were on the search for 'America's best dancer" but after Nick won and Blake didn't, they changed it the next season to the search for 'America's favorite dancer.' They learned real quick that it's a popularity contest!
It was also smart of them to change the format from the first season so they could save the strongest dancers as long as possible. There will be no AI Jasmine Triases or any Sanjayas on this show! I am not hating on Benji, he was so sweet and it was cute that he had a crush on Donyelle, although I wonder if his parents would mind that she wasn't white if he brought her home.
I can't wait for the audition process to be over. They put too much focus on the bad people and not the good. I would rather the perfomance show part of the show be longer. Plus, I don't know why they let us see people who are good, just for them to not make it. It is so annoying when they go to people homeotwns and stuff, and then still they don't make it. Why do they do that? People are watching the show because they want to see people dance. All the emotional stuff they are trying to evoke by getting us interested inpeople and then booting them off is unnecessary. Give us more time to form emotional bonds with the people that do get through! Man, I feel like shouting that from the roof tops!! They are trying to be like AI, but golly, that part of AI sucks too!!!
Still, I am sooo excited. I always tape the shows and watch them again. In fact I always make it a mission to bring new viewers to the show because I can't stand the thought of anyone missing out on all that great dancing. This week I was reviewing some tapes from the first season with a new friend of mine who knew nothing about the show. She is now going to start DVRing it when she is at work. FOX should pay me.
This show is really inspiring. One of these days I really am going to take some lessons, especially in the Argentine Tango!!

Hey, does anyone know what song was used on the Las Vegas show this past Wednesday (June 6) for the Shane Sparks hip-hop coreography? One of the lyrics seemed to say "don't let it get me down" or "won't let it get me down," or something to that effect.
Thanks so much in advance for your help - I haven't been able to get it out of my head - I must find it!
