Sure, Simon threatened to quit American Idol if Sanjaya won, but that seemed unlikely to ever happen. Look, even if Sanj did win by some miracle, Simon would have had to fulfill his contract with the show for the next three years. So Simon was never going anywhere. But that doesn't mean he won't quit -- eventually. In fact, Simon recently announced that after his contract is up he will be moving on from the show that helped make him a super-rich celebrity.
He told Extra that he'll be leaving after the show's 10th season because, "I'll have done 10 series and your time's up. It's time then to do something new. I think it's time to bring in new people ... Ten years is a long time."
When asked who he'd choose to replace him, Simon said, "Donald Trump."
I personally dislike Trump and will never watch the show again if Trump becomes one of the celebrity judges. Sure Simon is nasty, but Trump is nasty-looking. Plus, underneath his facade, I get the impression that Simon really is a good guy who is just "acting a part" for TV. However, I think Donald Trump really is as nasty as he appears to be. And what the heck does Trump know about music?
Let's be honest, by year 10, American Idol is going to be well past its prime and I doubt bringing an aging grumpy Trump into the mix is going to seriously reinvigorate the show. Besides, American Idol would not be the same without Simon Cowell.
Would you watch American Idol without Simon? I wouldn't.

It wouldnt be the same without Simon. The trio on the show is what we watch for and without the constant Simon and Ryna beef going on, there wouldnt be anything to continue to keep us hooked beyond the singing aspect of the show.

Do you really think American Idol will survive 3 more years? I am not so sure. Good move by Simon I think, to leave the boat before it's completely sunk.

Being on the show has made Simon Cowell the highest paid performer on broadcast TV. Plus he makes even more as a producer for all these talentless people on the show.

They should have quit after the first year when Kelly won on real talent. The rest of them have won because of groups like Vote For The Worst.
The talent gets worse every year -- or, they are putting through the worst so the rating drop and FOX cancels it before his contract is up.

Simon is the only reason to watch. He leaves; the show tanks.

Remember when Seinfeld started the "going out on top" and it (for awhile) was a standard of sorts. Riding out a contract is a risk for going out on top or even going out when the show is still interesting.
This year it seemed like Simon, Paula and Randy were just going through the motions. Simon was the only one with commentary that made sense and was not gimmicky. Randy needs to retire the repeating of names - shortening names - nicknames as well as the dawg. Pitchy is over used - Paula needs to find real comments and not superficial cheerleading.
As for Trump - I, agree with those that feel it was Simon joking around.
And yes, Simon should leave as well as the others. In a perfect world of tv - the show as well should leave on a good note with good memories.

The show's credibility has fallen badly enough after what happened to Melinda. Simon's departure would make it even duller.

No one will give a shit about Melinda by next year. EVERY year someone a lot of people think should be in the finale isn't, it's how the show is.
And why wouldn't the show be around in 3 years? Plus I heard he wanted the 10th season to be the last... so that's 4 years. Anyways the ratings this season dropped maybe 3 million. it could drop 3 million for the next 3-4 years and still be the numbe rone show. Next year is a new year and we will see what happens.

I wouldn't watch the show anymore if Simon quite. I do wish that after they get down to the last 4 contestents that the judges would have at least 50%, or more, of the voting ability to pick the winner. Looks is dictating the winner this year because they had the most talented two girls voted out in the last weeks of the competition and if you follow the internet it was because of their looks. It is a shame that America has to Idolize looks.

Maybe they should do an new kind of idol after the contract is up. Something to showcase some older people who never got thier shot.....They are missing out on alot of talent by limiting the age.....

The show wouldn't be the same without Simon. I do agree that Kelly Clarkson was definitely the best in season 1, but there have been great singers every year. If the best person won every year, Clay would have won in season 2, Fantasia definitely wouldn't have won, Bo Bice or Constantine would have won season 4, Daughtry would have wiped the floor with everybody last year, and the final this year would be Blake and Melinda, because they are the best. They are very evenly matched in singing, but I think Blake would win because he takes risks and puts on a great show, while Melinda plays it safe, and is kind of boring. The judges stopped being objective after a while about Melinda, because she was very consistent, and that led people to believe that she was better than she actually is. She is a very talented singer, but she isn't as good as everybody makes her out to be. She will have an ok career, but Blake will sell way more records than she will, and so will Jordin for that matter.

When Daughtry got voted off last season....I just lost interest. Chris Daughtry was not only the best singer but writes his own songs....and look what a success he is today. I just feel the show lost a lot of its appeal when that happened. It simply should not have happened and many lost faith in the voting system.
I definitely wouldn't watch without Simon.

They need to start charging 25 cents per call to stop the hillbillies from sitting around all night hitting the redial button.
