(S03E23) I have to admit, I swore at the end of this episode/season Edie was going to end up getting pregnant. I was so not expecting this. If you haven't watched tonight's episode yet, I suggest you stop reading now and NOT click on the link for the rest of the post.Gaby
Let's go ahead and start with Gaby since today was her big day. Her little hissy fit that Bree was late certainly took on new meaning after seeing her fight with Victor from the night before. Wow, how many excuses is she going to make for him? It's not too late to get the wedding annulled, or is it? He and his father seem to have a lot of power, and I am not convinced she could get out of the marriage at this point. I think they would do what they could to stop her, regardless of what that might entail.
Was anybody else distracted by the fact that Victor's father was played by Mike Farrell (B.J. from M*A*S*H)? I didn't think he looked or seemed old enough to play Victor's father and that threw me off. Other than the age though, I thought he did a really great job because his delivery is just so, "I'm a really nice guy," even when he is saying completely creepy things. I didn't love Gaby starting an affair with Carlos right after her marriage to Victor. That wasn't because I thought it was immoral or that Victor deserved better - I'm afraid Carlos is going to get whacked!
Edie
Speaking of whacked, I wasn't expecting Edit to kill herself. Whoa. Now. We all know that chances are that Edie isn't actually dead. This is television after all. But I didn't think she would be distraught enough for a suicide attempt. I really thought she would end up pregnant at the end of this episode, and that she and Carlos would continue to be an item. I think somebody (probably Carlos) will come in and save Edie, but I wonder what will happen next. Carlos definitely seems like the kind of guy to get back together with her (look at me continuing to assume she's still alive!) because he doesn't want her to hurt herself again. But what does that mean for him and Gaby? Sticky...messy...can't wait for Season 4!
Bree
It was so great to see Bree again! I forgot how much I've missed Marcia Cross's delivery. I love the fact that she is pretending to be pregnant so she can raise Danielle's child, and I love the fact that she has stuck Danielle in a convent. I predicted that she was faking the pregnancy even before Orson pulled off her velcro uterus. Did you? Or did you think Orson was just being super understanding about the fact that Bree slept with someone else? What a great way to explain any baby weight Marcia Cross may still have from her own real-life pregnancy (not that I noticed any), and what a typically Bree way to handle Danielle's pregnancy. How long before she gets caught?
Lynnette
There was already so much going in with this episode, but the Lynnette storyline could have been an entire show in and of itself. We got so many facts about Lynnette's life (and also why she is such a control freak, though not in Bree's genteel control freak way) from the barbs she tossed off about her mother. But I love how her mother dug her heels in, manipulated the kids, shamed and guilted Lynnette, and then finally brought home the real point of her visit: Lynnette can't take care of cancer on her own. She can't fight her mother and the cancer both. And, despite her bitterness, despite her stubbornness, perhaps it is more important to fight the cancer.
Susan
The conclusion with Susan and Mike getting married, paired with the Edie shocker are why I am giving this episode such a high rating. I thought Susan and Mike's wedding was romantic and perfect. And maybe that is because when I got married two years ago, I got married outside with only two close friends and my son present. So, I loved it. Good for Susan for figuring out that this is exactly the kind of wedding she and Mike needed, and good for her, for once, for not trying to keep up with the Jones Gaby.
This was a stand-out episode. This season has been wobbly and uneven, and at times downright painful to watch, but they have brought the show back magnificently. Nicely done. I am giving this episode the highest rating because this is how season finales should be done:

This episode cemented the reasons why I'm not watching next season.
Killing off Edie was obvious. Bree's back so Edie's character isn't needed any more. She was only stepped up to fill a void left by Bree, anyway. What does this show do when they want to get rid of someone? Kill 'em. It's easy that way.
It's getting increasingly hard to care for Gaby. She's going to get what she deserves. When she was called a "stupid woman", she should have stuck her chin up, tits out, and walked away. Appearances mean too much to her.
Bree is predictable. I hope Danielle throws a wrench into the whole plan. Nothing more to say.
Lynette, I'd actually want to see suffer a bit. She's a cold, hard, bitch who needs to relax a bit. I have no sympathy for her.
Shouldn't the Susan/Mike story have been dragged on until the series ended, like the whole Ross/Rachel thing? Susan is going to screw this one up somehow.
Mike needs to be slapped for going through with the wedding. She may have wanted Mike, but, she chose Ian. She obviously didn't want him that badly. She just doesn't want to be alone. (Yes, I followed the show until this point.)
Carlos is the only likeable character. He's not pussywhipped like Tom. He's thinking clearly, unlike Mike. He's not creepy like Orson. He knows what he wants and he's going to get it.
He'll feel guility about Edie, even if she's not dead. He's going to try and do the right thing, whatever that may be. He'll be Gaby's Knight in Shining Armor.
I won't miss this show next year. I'll find something on The History Channel to keep me entertained.

Oh my god jaymez, way to watch a show the most pesimistic way possible!
This is a tv show for God's sake, you "really" need to go history channel rather than these shows if you're gonna try and live it.
About the episode, a very suprising ending! Season 4 will be great to watch most specifically because of lynette's situation. And now that Susan is married, well, there's not one thing left interesting about her plot. But we'll see, they'll come up with a "mystery" for her to discover in her own clumsy way.

I *knew* Victor's dad looked familiar but I guess I haven't seen enough of M*A*S*H* to place him as BJ. It was a little odd to see that both men had white hair and one of them is supposed to be the father. They're not in their 60s and 80s, or whatever the math is supposed to be.
I thought Susan's wedding being so understated was lovely. For once, she wasn't doing a freak-out and making a mess of things.
As for Bree (yay, she came back!), the last time anyone saw Bree or Orson, they said that they'd send Danielle to live somewhere in Europe, let her have the baby there, and find a nice family for it to stay with while using the 'spending a year at boarding school' excuse. At the time, I thought that if she pretended to be pregnant, it would be the "Bree-ist" way of doing it. That wasn't surprising in the least bit. On the other hand, Edie's suicide (attempt) was a shocker though. She doesn't seem to care about most men in her life, and all of a sudden, one guy manages to steal her heart? I guess it's probably for once the guy doesn't like her and the girl wants to have what she can't have.
I'm looking forward to seeing the Bree, Edie, and Lynette storylines play out. I can't believe the writers gave Lynette's mother the name "Stella" with the last name "Wingfield." HA!

Um, Mike Farrell was born in 1939 and John Slattery in 1963, so he would have been 23 or 24...Perfect age. And just because you have grey hair doesn't make you 60! Yes, I had to look it up because Mr Farrell did seem a bit young, but apparently he has taken it easy since the Korean War...
And wow, I was thouroghly shocked by Edie's (possible) suicide. Just goes to show you that when they don't give you EVERYTHING in the previews/new just how good a show can be (yes, this site could be a bit better about hiding spoilers after the jump!) I have pretty much had to stop surfing entertainment sites to avoid learning of things like this and that Lost situation from a few weeks ago (nod nod wink wink)

Oh my gosh, Jen! Youre review is EXACTLY how I feel.
I would definitely give this ep a 7 out of 7, it was fantastic. And that ending...4 hours later and I am still in literal shock. I haven't been this thrown by a TV show in years. Wow.
Can't wait for season 4!

I have to disagree with Jen a little bit. There is no way this show was a 7 out of 7. I'd give it a 5. Of course, everything is relative...and, as the shows, have gone this season, it was one of the best. But it doesn't hold a candle to any of the episodes of the first season. The thing that bothered me about this episode was that two major characters did something that was totally OUT of character....First of all, there is no way that the Edie we know would try and kill herself over a man. Ain't gonna happen. Maybe if this season had focused a little more on Edie's desperation and lonliness and a little less on her manipulations, I would have bought it. Also, there is no way Gaby would have married this guy after he called her a "stupid woman." That would have been the end of it. Period. Of course, Bree is doing the Bree thing and faking pregnancy to raise her unwed daughter's baby. And Lynette is stoically fighting her cancer. At least these two characters remain constant. As for Susan, I'm just tired of her. Also, final note...I will agree that the casting of Mike Farrell was as Victor's dad was a little strange. They look more like brothers. I know Farrell is over 20 years older than Slattery but he doesn't look it.

I just hope that Edie's suicide attempt is just that, only an attempt. In all the magazine and online articles I have read about season finales, I don't remember any of them mentioning this so I was really thrown. But, I do hope that someone finds her before it's too late and gets her down.

Two things rocked this episode to pieces:
1: Bree returned, with a storyline worthy of the series' best character.
2: Edie was offed. Got I hated that character. You just know she'll be narrating from here on.
Honorable Mention: Gaby & Carlos.

The fact that Victor's father looks only slightly older than Victor was kind of disorienting.
I wonder if the producers are setting up an Eva Peron/Hillary Clinton type season for Gabby, where the marriage is the only source of her power, she cuts a deal with Victor to play "wife" in exchange for lifestyle and freedom, and she plays it to the hilt.
Wasn't Mike's brother supposed to join the cast last night? Was that a last-minute cut or did I miss something?
Was this the first season finale that didn't launch a mystery for the following season. I mean, the Edie thing is definitely a cliffhanger, but it's not a mystery in the sense of the buried bones, the Applewhites or Orson's past.
My wife called Bree's "pregnancy" at first sight.

Thought the show was great. I was not surprised at Edie offing herself, not due to a man, but the dream with her mother. She was afraid of dying old and alone, and it seems that throughout this season, men were not as easy for her to come by anymore. What if Danielle's child is bi-racial. How much time elapsed between her being with the two guys? I think that would be a great story line. I agree Gaby got what she deserved, she seemed to have doubts but went with it anyway for position and money. Susan did the right thing, and I think Lynette will be very much humbled by her cancer experience.

I didn't think the Victor and his dad seemed like they were that alike in age. Despite his white hair, Victor doesn't seem that old to me. The actor who plays him is only 44, while Mike Farrell is 68. Seems about right to me.
I hope Edie stays dead and that her "friends" feel guilty for not knowing how truly desperate a housewife she was -- and that she joins Mary Alice as a dual narrator where Mary Alice can be the platitude spouting annoying one and Edie can be the entertaining bitch.

Was there any-one who was really surprised about Edie. Since Carlos and Gabby have split, there wasn't a question in my mind that they would get back together. Some one brought up the fact that hubby and papa have alot of power, I didn't think about that! Next season should be exciting there.....
I'm so happy for Mike and Susan! I don't usually cry at weddings. It was beautiful! If I could do my wedding again.....
Bree, it's really good to see you, even though your husband is some what shady.
Lynnette, my gosh, whaddya say...? Don't give up on her, I would be royally ticked off if the producers even thought about whacking her!
heart broken

First of all, I have family with Cancer and it is the worst experience in the world. I definetly have sympathy for Lynette. I connect with her character. I have three younger syblings and I help tame them. I understand a lot of the things she does. I kinda liked the her and rick thing. I feel Tom deserved it.
Gabby is still a good person, she was just blinded by Victors "Sweetness" he pretended to be this loving guy but I knew he was a jerk. I already knew Carlos and Gabby are going to get back together because Eva said so on the View. She also said it wouldn't be this season though.
As for Edie, she deserves everything she got. They had to kill her off, there was nothing left to do with her character. As for Carlos feeling sorry later, he will because he's not the person to just not care but I don't think he'll be that sad, I mean, he didn't love her, she lied to him and set him up. I would have done the same thing if I was him.
As for Bree, she was missed! I love her character! My sister and I guessed what she was doing for Danielle. That is a pretty awsome mom to do that for her child. I wonder if my mom would do that?
I have been waiting for susan and mike to make it official for a long time. I was not a fan of the Ian relationship. She has loved mike for three years, there's no way she loved Ian more.
Can't wait for next season!

I have a feeling Edie didn't even "attempt suicide." It doesn't sound right. I'm thinking this is another one of her incredibly crazy tricks to try to get Carlos. Like someone said, Carlos might not leave her if she thinks she would hurt herself without him...and like someone said, there has been essentially no focus on Edie being *that* upset to end her life. And, let's face it, when you don't see something like this coming with a show's major character, that's because it's generally not coming. So I doubt Edie is dead. We would have seen or heard a spoiler that she's leaving the show or something.

I'm going to throw in a zinger.......
Wasn't Danielle screwing around with her teacher. If I do recall her teacher was darker skinned although I can't remember his race exactly. Point is....what if Edie's nephew isn't the father......what if it's the teachers'.
If this happens Danielle could give birth to a baby who is mixed. How will Brie be able to explain that one! All of a sudden Brie has a baby assumably, if that's a word, with Orson.....and it's clearly a mixed race child.
This would certainly blow her cover!
What do you think????

My first thought was Bree had baby transferred into her in Switzerland, and left daughter to be brainwashed. I think my thought would've made a great storyline. Didn't see fakeout coming. Great moments in finale!

What an ending. I was so shocked to see that Edie was the one to die. The rumor was that one of the character's was to die at the end of the season but why Edie? I know it is all fantasy but who doesn't like a little fantasy in their life. I will definetly watch next season.
So good to see Brie back. She is so fun to watch. Now we have the mystery of what will happen with the baby and will her daughter throw a wrench into her plans. Oh what drama. That is what makes it a fun show. Can't wait for what comes next season.

Not a bad episode and not a bad season ending show ...but not a real nail biter either. There was no real plot twist that makes me dying for September to get here quickly.
I think season 3 was much better than season 2 -- however neither were as good as season 1. ABC better get season 4 off to a good start, or they will be Desperate Housewifes "desperate" for viewers.
A few comments:
Who hangs themselves? I agree Edie's character was only given more screen time due to Bree's disappearance, but my guess is the rope or whatever breaks come September....however it would be interesting if her character were truly dead. Maybe sleeping pills or slicing her wrists, but hanging?
Does anyone remember the old Bree's son -- has he done a 180 or what? And did they just forget the storyline of him running over Carlos' mother in a hit & run? He doesn't appear to be the old son, conniving, gay, selfish ect. person.
Why would Susan's daughter still want to be friends with Bree's daughter? Didn't she steal and have sex with her boyfriend? Plus why even in a covenant can she not email or call friends to "act" like everything is okay at the new school.
And I know they explained the old womans (Lynette's baby-sitter) reason for hiding her husband in the freezer ...but do the writers expect the police to just drop it too? Did anyone besides me think that storyline was here then gone? Way to short and what was the point?
Bree's husband? A hit and run killer one day with a mysterious past and a year later he is a loving husband. I like Bree's character but her two kids are going to be the dead of her.
Gaby -- does anyone feel sorry for her? She has always been a money hungry character, using men, thinking she is better than everyone else for the most part. Now she is being "used" by a man who only married her for political gain.
Lynette and Tom -- they needed a storyline to get them back strong as a couple because of their recent problems and this was it. Nice idea and nice writing. I have not liked the whole Pizza Restaurant story for them this year. Lynette is strong and I am curious to how this will play out over time considering they have enough kids for a basketball team, a business, and a marriage to manage.
Mike and Susan finally tied the knot, so I can't see where these two can go as a story. As popular as their characters are its hard to just say have them move away, but really where can the writers go with them now?
And what about Mike's son? Okay he is a rich kid/young adult now, but now that Mike got his memory back does he not want to get to know him? They just seemed to let that story go too.
Poor Carlos...he has no where to live and no one to love. He wants a kid real bad so maybe their wedding day "get together" gets Gaby pregnant.
The first season (and the second one tried) was a focus on a mystery -- but what was this years? Orson maybe, but that was so dumb they just wrapped it up fast to keep his character on the show. My point is they need to get back to what was successful on the show, don't make it a soapy soap opera. Season 4 needs better storylines....
