(S03E25) For all the negative stuff that's been said about Grey's Anatomy this season, I think they turned out a pretty solid season finale. It made sense, stories ended logically, and let's be honest - it was way better than last season's "prom in a hospital" mess. All the bases were covered. The exams, the wedding, the Meredith/McDreamy relationship status, and the race for chief. Of course the one thing on everyone's mind (the identity of Derek's flirtatious bar encounter) was revealed too. I'm not overly obsessed with what happens next. It was just a comfortable ending with some questions that I'm in no rush to get answers to. I like where that leaves us though because it means we can start fresh in the fourth season and hopefully leave behind some of the things that made this season so lackluster.
So let's analyze the questions that are up in the air. What about Chief of Surgery? Weber offered it to Derek, but Derek turned it down, instead suggesting that Weber come back and take the job in a new direction. Do it differently. So the question is will Weber come back? This whole season he's been such a proponent of family values (which is partly why I think he gave Chief Resident to Callie over Bailey), and now that he has a legit chance to make things work with Adele again? That being the case, I honestly don't see him coming back.
Which relates directly to Meredith and Derek. They're on the outs. Things aren't good and I think Derek put it best when he said that he's in it more than she is. I think he's finally starting to realize that she's been holding him back and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he changes his mind in the fall premiere and goes back to Weber, to take the job. I think most will agree it's better when Meredith and Derek aren't together and as the show has progressed, I think it's become clear that they don't really work. But like all great shows, I think we can assume they'll end up embracing in the series finale... whenever that happens.
It's gonna get more complicated with the arrival of McBar Skank a.k.a. Lexie Grey a.k.a. Meredith's half-sister. She's part of the new crop of interns. Slightly clichéd, but I think it adds a nice layer. She's all sweet and fluffy, but what are her real intentions? If she's anything like her kin, she isn't going to waste any time getting what she wants. She just lost a mother too, but I don't think she's as prone to depression as Meredith. Her attitude may be a welcome change for Derek if he chooses to pursue her. Incidentally, the actress who plays Lexie (Chyler Leigh) has been offered a 13 episode arc next season... so something is brewing.
Moving on... the wedding. Or lack thereof. I'll be brief about this one only because I've despised this storyline all season. Thank god Burke came to his senses! Cristina is selfish, self-centered, far too career driven, and completely oblivious to the feelings of those around her. Why would you want that woman to be your wife? Seeing as how Burke only packed up his trumpet, CD collection, and lucky scrub hat, I'm thinking he'll be back though.
Other stuff and a few predictions...
-
Ava/Jane Doe/Rebecca Pope ended up being a weird Denny Duquette story after all. She fell for Alex was the twist. It's almost a little Stockholm Syndrome-ish. Regardless, it bugged me and I'm glad she left. I'm disappointed that Alex went back after her though. Weird.
-
I was waiting for it all episode, but Weber finally gave us the words that officially "create" Private Practice. He told Addison that if she isn't happy, then go get a new life... or something like that. Guess what! Her new life has talking elevators and that guy from Wings!
-
George failed the intern exam and he's obviously not going to repeat the year again. So what's next? Well I doubt he's going to stay with Callie... although, she is loaded. To me this screams some kind of "need to find myself" story that will take up at least 6 episodes. When he finds himself? I bet he becomes an EMT. It's the only thing that makes sense to me that'll still keep him involved.
-
The mountain climber story turned out to be far less exciting than I was hoping.
So what does everyone else think? Is George going to admit he has feelings for Izzie too? Is Bailey going to get more involved with her young son's life? Will Weber come back? How long before Meredith realizes who Lexie is? Lots of questions, but as I said... no rush to find out the answers. Kudos to Shonda Rhimes and Co. for making it up to us. For once we can stop obsessing over the show that everyone is obsessing about. 6 out of 7.

In other words, she has the same character traits as Burke, except he's already achieved the status she still has to work for, and has the luxury of relaxing a bit.

I really disliked the finale. The reveal that the woman in the bar was Meredith's half sister was so cheap. I reviewed the show on my own blog.

George is still a doctor he just can't be a surgeon without passing his internship. He can intern in something else, oncology, dermatology or be a GP, he does not have to be an EMT.

This was quite the depressing season finale. Another miscariage? Aleast they didn't make us watch this miscariage like the one from earlier this season. There's reports that either TR or Washington will not be returning to the show in the fall and I think the writers left there storylines pretty open while things get worked out in the interim.

I knew this episode was going to be bad in a non-happy ending sort of way, the Whitney Houston song title gave it away. But seriously Can we have at least one couple on this show be a happy functional couple? I really thought Burke and Cristina were it. Alex is just damaged. He did this 'too cool' for you routine to Izzie, Addison, and now Ava/Rebecca. Next season I would like more of what makes Alex Alex. We know what every other families issues are; why not his? The worst part of the show was Callie. I'm sorry but she is the most self-obsessed, spolied, Vile, rude, ruthless brat I have ever seen on TV. (and I watched 90210 during the Brenda years) You know your marriage is a sham and your husband loves someone else but you will not just let it go and move on. If I was Izzie I would have shoved that bouquet down her smug throat after she said that her & George were trying for a baby. Kudos to Sara Ramirez for playing someone that shallow.

I'm sorry. I think you meant Izzie.
And for the reviewer calling Christina "selfish, self-centered, far too career driven, and completely oblivious to the feelings of those around her"... well BC actually put it quite nicely. In fact I think the point Burke was trying to make to here was here was this woman willing to change who she is to make him happy and since he's not willing to do that for her, he has to let her go. No one is really at fault here. Just... complications... life, etc.

Yes Diana you tell us that you have "reviewed the show on my own blog" every week. Please stop. Or at lest pay for the advertising.
Other wise I really liked this epp. until the last 15 Min. Burk and Christina should have been the one solid couple on the show. there seem to be lots of possibilities for the future. Alex should end up with Ava!

What I learned, yet again, from this episode? Never, ever, ever have surgery in this hospital. Because they allow couples to operate right before their wedding. And have a surgeon recite his emotional vows while he's in the middle of operating, and while all the women who are supposed to be assisting stand there blubbering about it. And a doctor suggests her intern pursue a relationship with his married patient, who's recovering from a serious brain injury. And where all the doctors are in a constant state of emotional stress because of their love affairs and jealous rivalries with their coworkers and supervisors. And the "chief" job is given to someone who we've hardly ever seen in a leadership role and who is immediately planning to have a baby, partly because someone more qualified turned it down for inexplicable reasons. Have I missed anything? If I'm ever in Seattle, I'm leaving town if I so much as get the sniffles.

I really don't know about this finale, it seemed wrong and forced in so many ways.
It feels like Burke and Christina were broken up just so they can get back together later and expand their storyline further. I know this is a tried and tested method, but I'm getting sick and tired of it, its so unnatural. I think Luke and Lorelai breaking up on Gilmore Girls kinda pushed me over the edge for this plot device...
And I'm sorry but Meredeth...beeeeeeeatch. Big time. Derek tells her he thinks their relationship is failing, that she puts more emphasis on her friends than him, continuously walks away from him, doesn't turn to him when times are hard, and what does she do...she walks away. And she made Christina's wedding day all about her, telling her that she needed her to get married to restore her faith in herself...WTF was that.
I hope Derek does leave the vapid, self-obsessed, selfish Mer in the dust...for her sister lol. You know they're going down this road, and it's going to make Derek look like a dog.
Really didn't like the way the Chief issue went down. We've been waiting for this all season...and still nothing, total cop out.
And George failing his exams? He had Callie, the test machine...sure Christina had the cards, but c'mon, George isn't going to be a surgeon now?
Again, feels forced, like Shonda is creating drama where there shouldn't be, not letting the story flow naturally. I've heard she has the whole plot planned out years in advance, and I think we might be seeing the deficiencies with that right now.
The one thing I did like, officially putting me on the complete opposite side of the coin from the reviewer, was the Alex-Ava/Rebecca storyline. It was a bit Denny-esque, but somehow I think we'll see a certain doctor taking a trip to a certain small town next season...just a hunch.
All in all, a pretty crappy way to end the season in my opinion. Compared to last season, which I loved...again, other side of the coin...with Denny, and everything else, this was just...meh, and that's not how the biggest show on TV should say goodbye for the summer...

The meta analysis of the show from my point of view is this: The show has proven that Meri-death has "failed to thrive" - she tried killing herself by not swimming, but got saved by the man she loves, she tried killing her internship by purposefully not answering the questions, but got saved by her caring Chief, she's even tried killing the best relationship she had more than a few times. So, here's my question: Which audience is the show trying to appeal to? (sorry to make this point a second time, but this show just hammered the whole thing home, didn't it?)
I can imagine that people would LIKE to root for Mer -- she is, after all, what the show is named after -- but it's so hard to root for someone I just wouldn't want to be around. That's okay, I'm a man. Thing is, will women want to continue watching a show whose lead character doesn't even want to be where she is?
I suspect the ultimate popularity of the show may have peaked this season. Those who remain loyal fans may end up like those still watching '24', trying to justify why they're still watching a show whose characters people quit caring about.

I came away from it relieved. Relieved in the sense I had no expectations prior to watching, just a few hopes, which at least one came true. The part that the bar hussy was indeed Mer's half sister Lexie. I have read in a few places prior to watching the episode about how the finale sucked, people hated it, it wasn't as good as last year, etc. I enjoyed it, plain and simple. I enjoy the characters. I realize they don't have to be put in incredible situations for me to keep watching. I am not going to say bad things about my favorite show, because then it won't be my favorite show anymore. Lots of things are left up in the air right now. Where did Burke go? What will happen with Derek and Meredith? How will Bailey handle not being chief resident? How will Callie handle the fact George failed the exam? Will Alex find Rebecca/Ava again? What will Christina do now? Will Richard and Adele reconcile for good?

Horrible, horrible, season finale! This season of Grey’s was like Season 2 of Desperate Housewives. Now DH is good again, and Grey’s is very lackluster just as the reviewer commented. There was no cliffhanger that made me excited for next season. Also, I hated what happened with all of the couples. It just seemed so fake. I hated how Meredith wouldn’t respond to Derek’s declaration of love. It just didn’t seem real and was just written to cause drama.
Next season they need to focus on making the show funny again. And they need to create story lines that are interesting and just don’t involve everyone hooking up w/ everyone possible. Gizzie, anyone? Yuck! Can’t anyone be friends on this show w/out having sex?
Overall I give this finale a 1. Nothing interesting happened, nothing funny said, and nothing that makes me excited for next season.

Also, what's w/ them making the main character so unlikable? I mean I don't like Ellen in real life, but I try to put what I know about her in real life aside and just focus on the character, Meredith. But I can't seem to like Meredith either. Shonda makes her so unstable and just generally so unlikable and b*tchy. Shouldn't the audience root for Meredith? But Shonda makes it nearly impossible to root for her when she is just so unfriendly, impersonal?

Chyler Leigh will be headlining the new Grey's Anatomy next season.
I liked the finale I suppose, we won't see the same dynamics anymore in terms of career choices now that George is no longer going to be scrubbing in and the rest aren't interns anymore.

i didnt like it one bit it didnt flow a season finale should be full of shocks and have a good cliffhanger. i would have been more shocked if burke and christina had got married. and if the chief can let Meredith retake her exam why cant he let George retake his. and why would callie want to have a baby with him last week she thought he was in love with someone else. As for mcdreamy Meredith he should dump her because all she does is whine and moan about how bad her life is he deseves a lot better it will intresting to see where it goes with her sister. and i liked that alex was in love ava i thought was the only good thing in a very boring finale

What I got from the finale was that they decided to let BOTH Preston and George go from the show since they couldn't reach an agreement, but I suppose you're right about the open-ended storylines giving them time during the summer to work it out.
This is a little off-topic in regards to the finale, but this has been sort of bothering me for quite a while: How old are the interns supposed to be? In real life, Ellen Pompeo is 39. The same age as Kate Walsh and McDrizzle. Katherine Heigle and Sarah Ramierez are the youngest, at like, 28 and 30, or something like that. I know it takes awhile to get to your residency, and you can go to college at any time in your life, but sometimes there are shots where it looks like Meredeth is Izzy's haggard mom. And Callie just looks too young to be Chief Resident.
Also, this new batch of interns look like they just graduated from High School Musical.
Anyone else have any thoughts on their ages, or the ages they're playing?

I have never been so disappointed in a finale as I was in Grey's last night. And it WAS my favorite show. I understand the need to have cliffhangers but did it need to be so depressing. Every couple, every person on the show that we have come to care about had their lives ripped apart - come on writers, we need some happiness.......I went to bed last night mad at myself for ever having watched the show and not sure if I would ever watch it again.

I had high hopes after the first half of the episode. First, the scene with Meredith and Derek. The whole "should I be worried?" scene. The promos made it look like it was going to be this awful scene where Derek was a huge jerk, but of course, they cut out lines to make it into something it really wasn't. For me, a Mer/Der fan, that was a score. I was thinking positive.
There were funny moments, things that made me chuckle. Cristina and the eyebrows, for instance, that was funny. How Bailey was able to take her seriously with her looking like that, I have no idea, but they let her "cut someone open" to help relieve her stress.
I knew that when we were hearing Burke's vows in the OR, we weren't going to be hearing them again--it was obvious that there was no way the two of them were going to make it down the aisle. I loved Addison in that scene though... when he first started off, "I'm not optimistic, I'm not hopeful..." and her reaction, "Umm, OK..." like she wanted him to stop because he had them all wrong. And her joke at the end about marrying her instead. I also liked the scene between her and Alex at the church. I love Addison. I'm seriously going to miss her at Seattle Grace next season.
Meredith and Derek. Ugh, this made me so angry. I know I'm probably biased, because I like them together... but even trying to look at it objectively, I just don't understand how this is possible. When Derek's NOT being a jerk, Meredith is, and vice versa. With the timeline of the show, the way it moves... Meredith's drowning incident was probably a month ago. The whole time that was happening, Derek looked like if Meredith stopped breathing (permanently), he would, too. And Meredith, when she was making her visit to the "other side," she had her breakdown about how a "whiff, a brush with" Derek was not enough. They couldn't have made it more clear that these two love each other. And so what do they do now? The writers completely do a 180 and make these two insufferable. It's annoying as hell. When Derek poured his heart out to her in the locker room, I was so happy, and then I got pushed right back down. I couldn't even believe that Meredith reacted the way she did. It was so unrealistic to me. I looked at my friend and said, "she DID NOT just say that." I mean, how could someone do that after what he said to her?
And don't even get me started on these new interns, and specifically Lexie. I just don't like it. Not one bit.

I liked the scene btwn George and Bailey on the bench, when he said he failed her. It really shed light on their relationship, which hadn't been given attention as of late... she named his son after him!
It was the best 1 minute of the episode.

Just tell us by the title of the show, what to expect. I really disliked this season finale. It seemed contrived, forced, instead of evolving. Talk about wasting away into nothing. Not sure I'll be back in the fall. Meredith and Derek, getting unbelievable. Izzy and George, ridiculous from the get-go. Now he's failed his exam, while his wife basks in glory. TYPICAL. Callie and him WERE perfectly suited. Let him be an onstaff doctor, not surgeon. Burke and Christina could have tied the knot...all brides have jitters. They were GOOD together. And Alex kissing Ava,walking away, while maybe predictable, could have been dramatic, if ONLY they HAD done it. A REAL love story in the making. And they let it go, for more BORING, TYPICAL, ENDLESS, trite, sexcapades. On the other hand...the baby and Adele, very sad. LOVED the dialogue between her and Meredith. The Chief and Adele reunited, just so he can stay at hospital. Did it work the first time? For me the BEST moment came when they REVEALED Meredith's sister, and the other new interns to George. His pain, mixed with surprise worked. And that dialogue came naturally and seemed to flow, the way it should.
