Fresh from The CW's post-upfront press conference this afternoon comes some sad news: Veronica Mars will not live on for a new season. The CW has kept us on the edge of our seats for months now, not really making much of a peep about the fate of one of my favorite shows. This season definitely had its hits and misses, but I felt another season with the reported possible retooling would bring it back to first-season-like greatness.
Unfortunately for all of us this means we'll be left with a rather lackluster series ender next week, as everyone involved with the show seemed to think it was premature to write an episode that worked as a series ender. Even if the season finale could "work" as a series ender, I'll be surprised if it'll cut it.
Then again, maybe a miracle will happen and the show will move to another network in the future. Ah who am I kidding.

I now hate the CW. Unless they pull another buffy-esque witty drama out of their ass, they're dead to me.

Where did you hear that it was officially axed? I've read that they're giving Thomas until June 15th to submit a full script of his revamp and if they like it it'll be a mid-season replacement.

@schwegler: Reaper looks promising.
@Dante: It was mentioned at the press conference that the show is dead, though it "might come back in some other form" but that "it's doubtful." I don't think I'm going out on a limb assuming 'Veronica Mars' is done. If it "comes back," then it will be a new show, not VMars.

Dawn Ostroff seems determind to run The CW into the ground.
I've been through this fight for the last 3 years, with the uncertainty of it being renewed, and am just gutted that its gone.
Reading what she was said to Ausiello over on his blog, she doesn't really seem to know what shes talking about being so conflicting and uncertain.
I know its only a TV show, but there is no way i'm going to watch any other CW shows this fall, and i'm sure i'm not the only one who thinks like that.
How many more years do we think the CW is gunna survive? Its fall lineup certainly doesn't look good.

Well, it may have been a mercy killing.
The show had not been its old noir-ish self for some time, and these recent stand-alone episodes, 2/3 of which (so far) have read like PSAs (the last one complete with cast in "cause" t-shirts giving web addresses, like they were freakin' "7th Heaven" or something), have been simply abysmal.
Sometimes it's just time to pull the plug-although I seriously doubt that's why Dawn Ostroff pulled it. All I'm sayin' is, it was time.

I'm shocked VM got 3 seasons. That said I'm shocked they canceled it considering how bad the channel is. I guess it's cheaper and "hipper" to do "reality' shows.

Finally. This show needed to go. Not only was no one watching (look at the numbers), but the show it is now doesn't even resemble the show I fell in love with season 1.

I loved VMars, but ever since the first season (which was pretty much perfect) ended, I found myself constantly disappointed with it. There was just no where to go really once that first huge Lily-murder-plot was wrapped up. It survived this long basically on the awesome of the character, and not the plot... in my opinion anyway.
So it's sad to see it go, but it was time. Hopefully they renew Supernatural (their only other good show) though...

dawn ostroff is a moron...so VM is dead but she is talking to kristin and rob about something else that probably won't happen. they have done nothing but dick rob thomas around. everyone who says the show isn't itself, that's because WB and now CW was constantly asking for changes to the show. when are networks going to learn that sometimes it takes a little time for a show to find its feet? oh never, unless that network is NBC which really seems to know what it is doing these days. it's just like every other corporation that has no faith in teh people it hires. i'd like to see dawn ostroff write something even close to teh brilliance of veronica mars. eff her.

My girlfriend drug me kicking and screaming into Veronica Mars but over the 3 seasons its become one of my favorite shows. Is it as great as it once was? No, but people saying it has reached the point they should pull the plug... that's insane, that show is still better than 90% of the total crap that is shoved down our throats. I see this cancelation as the furthering of the lowest common denominator agenda... God doesn't want us to think he wants us to pick a case and hope we get lots of money. Thinking is for the weak!
I won't stop watching the CW... I like supernatural and Everybody hates chris a lot and Reaper may be interesting (Ok so I barely watch the CW as is). But I'm guessing by next year Supernatural will be gone and replaced by some show about rich white kids being rich white kids.

yeah, i was just going to post the ausiello link. there may be a Veronica Mars show but it looks like "Veronica Mars" the TV show is dead. as long as thomas is there and bell is the lead, i'll watch it.
season 3 is the death of all great/poorly watched shows - arrested development is the first and best that comes to mind.

I am very disappointed in the CW. The WB started off as a channel that though catered to the younger demographic, did not dumb down its content. As someone who started watching the WB when it premired and has continued ever since, I am very disappointed to see that is has retained shows like "The Pussycat Dolls" which caters to the braindead. Smart shows are few and far between and now with the cancellation of "Veronica Mars" and "Gilmore Girls" the CW has lost another viewer. On the plus side for them this has opened up another hour of prime time that they can show some scantily clad teenybopper gyrating to music and demeaning themselves. Good choice.

I'm just so frustrated with watching television. I understand that these decisions are made based on finances, but it still sucks. Some networks don't give shows a chance to develop a following (Drive, Black Donnelleys, the Nine, Daybreak), some networks interfere with a show (Firefly), and some don't even give showrunners an opportunity to finish their shows properly (Mars, Gilmore Girls, Angel). Some are decisions that I don't really understand (Jericho, just the simple fact that How I Met Your Mother was a bubble show,
But, to be honest, I'm less pissed at network executives, and more pissed at people who watch Pussycat Dolls, America's Top Model, American Idol (to an extent), and the like, and ruin good television for the rest of us.
The Unit is a good show. I watch it every week, without fail. Is it better than Mars? Nope. Is Smallville? Shark? October Road? Las Vegas (with half the cast)?
I won't be watching the CW anymore. I haven't been into Smallville for a long time, and if Allison Mack isn't around, I'd have no reason to try anymore. I'll only watch Fox for 24. Reaper is the only offering between the two networks that looks anywhere near interesting to me.

Well, dawn ostroff has given VM three seasons, when it most likely wouldn't have gotten more than one season on any other network, and (unless I'm remembering wrong) the ratings has been very low the whiole time, and combining UPN and WB didn't seem to bring more viewers to the show, so I think that we should all be grateful to have gotten that much instead of bashing DO, that seems to have given a lot of support to VM.
