(S06E39) Last season's third place finisher Elliot Yamin showed up to perform on tonight's American Idol. He sounded truly grateful and sincere as he gave words of encouragement to the Final 3 contestants. And he served as a fitting reminder that finishing third on American Idol isn't such a bad thing. Someone has to go home tonight -- but it's not an ending for that finalist. It's really only the beginning of a career.
This time next year, I fully expect tonight's third place finisher to be on this same stage singing and promoting a CD and upcoming tour.
I just didn't expect the results to go the way they did tonight. And I never thought that this year's third place finisher would be...
MELINDA DOOLITTLE?!?!
Wow, what a shock. I couldn't believe it when Ryan told her it was the "end of the road." Ever since Sanjaya went home, most of the eliminations have been fairly predictable. But I really thought that Melinda was heading to the finale -- especially after last night. Simon thought so too. And so did most of our commenters.
According to the poll on last night's recap, an overwhelming majority (64%) of you thought that Blake was going to get the FEWEST votes. Melinda seemed to be super-safe. Which only tells me one thing: Blaker Girls aren't the ones reading my recap or taking part in online polls. They're too busy voting for their guy, Blake.
So it's JORDIN SPARKS vs. BLAKE LEWIS in the finale.
The odds makers were right. They did predict a Jordin/Blake finale. Will they also be right about Jordin winning this year's American Idol title? Yesterday, I thought Jordin was a sure thing, but now I just don't know. Will Jordin pick up Melinda's votes? Just how committed are Blake's fans? Could a beatboxer actually win this thing?
I guess we'll find out next week during the two-part season finale.
While I was truly sad to see Melinda go, I thought it was classy of Ryan to refer to her as "one of our best singers ever." And of course the judges had nothing but nice things to say about Melinda. Randy: "You were the most consistent all season, so be proud." Paula: "You have already made it." And Simon actually took time to congratulate the other two, but commiserated with Melinda, whom he called "one heck of a singer."
I'm pretty sure this is not the last we've seen or heard of Melinda Doolittle.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:
- Tonight's show started with an intro by Homer Simpson instead of Ryan Seacrest. I was sure this meant we were going to be in for another promo for The Simpsons Movie. It did not.
- THE TRIPS HOME -- Each finalist went home last week and were bestowed with many honors (parades, interviews, streets named after them). It looked like a pretty intense and grueling schedule for each of them, but they seemed to enjoy the attention and accolades. Up until now they've been kept in a bubble, so I'm sure it was overwhelming to see how much of an impact they've had back home. I really liked the "Seattle Rocks -- Simon Was Wrong" sign that Blake's fans brought to the celebration.
- ELLIOTT YAMIN -- He was sporting lots and lots of curls, and showing off those brand new sparkly teeth. He was also wearing a sweater vest. Have sweater vests come back into style? He sang "Wait for You" and sounded better than most of the other "legendary" mentors who have performed this year. And the judges gave him comments just for the heck of it. Randy said, "it was hot...welcome home." Paula was speechless, she was "so proud of him" she couldn't stand it. Simon said, "not great, I'm kidding, it was great."
- ELLIOT'S ADVICE -- He told the finalists "you've come so far...and this is only the beginning of great things to come." Elliot also thanked everyone. No, really, EVERYONE. Which prompted Ryan to ask if he wanted to thank Coca Cola or Ford. Elliot thanked Porsche, which caused Ryan to quip, "That's a no-no on this show."
- MAROON 5 -- They sang "Makes Me Wonder" and I'm sort of surprised the Idol producers let them sing a song with the lyrics: "And it really makes me wonder If I ever gave a f**k about you." Sure they didn't actually say the f-word, but still, it's not the most appropriate song for a "family show." Luckily, my kids were too bored by the results show to watch. However, I imagine other 10-year-old kids might want to download the song tomorrow, and their parents are going to be in for quite a shock.
- FORD COMMERCIAL -- Tonight's video featured the song "Everybody Wants You" and showed Blake, Melinda, and Jordin as children singing in their rooms. Okay, it wasn't really them as children. But there were three really cute kids who were perfectly cast as their younger counterparts.
OTHER TIDBITS:
- Tickets for The Idols Live Tour go on sale the weekend of May 19th.
- American Idol is looking for the best undiscovered band.
- Was that Jackie Collins in the audience?
- Blake's father is awesome. Too bad Ryan kicked him off the stage.
- Melinda is really, really gone. Bummer.
Next Wednesday: Season Finale Part 2 (8-10 PM ET)

Melinda is talented, no doubt. Melinda was also a professional singer to begin with. Just because she sang backup, does not negate the fact that she is a pro.
American Idol is about undiscovered talent. Jordin fits the bill like a glove. She is Idol material. Young, fresh, hip and pretty. She has the look of an Idol to me.

That is a bummer, I voted for her, after it taking me 20 minutes to get through to vote once, I didn't expect her to go home, that's a shock, but the good thing is, JASLENE is America's Next Top Model!!

i totally agree with you.
and yes! i saw the gaff that ryan made about 'melinda going home'.!
whoaaaaaa.
but after seeing the angry, pinched face of simon from the beginning of the hour?
hmmmm......uh oh. it's true..........
simon already knows who's going home, of course! the best IDOL has ever had!
yes, i too have to say that i won't be watching the IDOL finale. neither jordin or blake have any originality. each one mimics 2 or 3 other ORIGINAL artists. and there's very little feeling or emotion when they attempt that.
what's left ?
2 kids being kept onstage only by other kids. the music?
2 dry hamburgers on stale buns.
yes, i too think the voting system needs serious renovation!

With so many comments in support of Melinda all of you who believe she deserved to go home should see that you are few!!!!!!!
We all love Melinda. She was great every single week. Jordin had one good week...Broken Wing. And Blake had one or two good weeks. Melinda was the best by far so stop lying to yourselves.
Just say you voted for Blake and/or Jordin 1000 times because you knew that's what you had to do to get them in the final two. Melinda's fans will not be disappointed. She will be successful.
I hope you all are still here next year so we can discuss album sales! All of the "old" people who like Melinda are the ones who can afford to buy her cd's!!! She will sale more, I promise. The only people who will buy Blake cd are 7-15 yr old girls...and a few guys. I don't think he will have more than one good song. He may not even have that. I refuse to discuss Jordin.

okay... so the worst thing that ever happens is this melinda chick is third... she was ALREADY living HER DREAM... let someone else have one... I like it that those two kids are getting a chance..... I am glad to see the America dream being granted on Amreican Idol... and those kids taking avantage of their freedom and liberty and making the most of what is offered... Melinda... good job... your education has already paid off... step aside and let another batter up to the plate... yup you got some talent... but you were consistent... you really never GREW... did you?

i really think it should've been melinda and lakisha in the final 2. blake's a cutie, but i don't think he measures up to the league melinda & lakisha are in.
i'm not a huge fan of jordin, but i think her size is fine the way it is. (camrin)
i still think haley should've made it to the finale. lol

In response to "Ryan" who posted that Seacrest said that Melinda was going home after the commercial break and gave away the outcome: Hey Ryan he was talking about the video of Melindas trip to her home town not the outcome of the voting, Thats why you think nobody else noticed it. It is really because every body else understood what he meant.

american idol blew it out the box. melinda doolittle is the best singer and performer that has graced that stage. the show needs to give simon the power to overide a decision on voting someone out. it is clearly evident that the show doesnt want a talent but a idol. that is why the show is incorrect, in the name. the correct name is american teen idol. has anybody ever thought of how many votes are coming from the same text messages over and over. listen to simon cowl. he knows talent. barry from alabama

All Melinda fans:
Please vote for Blake. Jordin is arrogant. If we all vote for Blake, there is no way that snotty-gal can win. I don't like Blake, but he is more deserving than Jordin.

Alot of people are correct. Melinda does not have the Idol qualities and Jordin does. (Meaning...Melinda will not be a one hit wonder and Jordin most likely will!!) I see Melinda selling many records. I also see Blake doing very well, because he isn't afraid to be unique! IF I continue to watch the show, I will be voting for Blake

I was in total shock that Melinda got voted off last nights show....that is until I remembered that she was pre-idol a back-up singer for many stars. I remember long ago wondering how she even got on the show, as she did not come into this with raw talent like everyone else, and has always had an edge up because of it.

Speaking from experience -- I won a major national music competition before American Idol appeared -- I can assure everyone in this blog that Melinda will not only be a smashing success, she will eclipse whoever wins this year, much as Clay Aiken did with Ruben Studdard. Does anyone really doubt that the results of this show were hopelessly flawed, even fraudulent? The only evidence you need are the combined televised shock of Simon Cowell and both finalists, along with every online poll you can throw a stick at showing Melinda in a runaway lead. The show's "judging" has no credibility whatsoever -- witness, if you will, the long overdue booting of Sanjaya. The telephone "voting" is a sampling system that allows 19 Entertainment (the parent company) to gage which performers would be best received by the public before releasing any product, and repeat calls from the same phones only further emboldens them because it demonstrates enthusiasm for a performer. They don't care about fairness, they care about DATA. This is a huge, well designed, subversive MARKETING scheme that has helped insure success, disguised as a TV show. That's why under-29 singers do songs appealing to an 18-60 marketplace while only merchandising to the core 18-34 market. One market gets advertisers, the other gets sales. It's a live infomercial, combining advertising, reality TV, drama, controversy, comedy, suspense and crafty marketing delivered twice weekly. Brilliant -- but definitely subversive. Just don't kid yourselves into believing that fairness is the goal, or that talent is the base requirement, anymore (as we have learned) that winning is a pre-requisite to commercial success. Aiken, Daughtry, McPhee and even Kelly Pickler have proven that and, soon, Doolittle will drive that point home. Go to win -- but don't cry if you don't. For the record -- I won a national title with a record deal, and when the label went into reorganization, I lost the deal without a CD release for reasons completely unrelated to my talent. Now -- at the age of 52 -- I'm getting another chance! Even if you DON'T appear on Idol, if you believe in yourself, DON'T GIVE UP! The record labels don't own the game anymore, in today's digital age. And to Melinda -- YOU GO, GIRL! WE'RE WAITING FOR YOU!!

Melinda should not have left Idol last night. It's too bad, she really is the one with the most talent. She will most definitely have a successful career, she is no longer just a back up singer anymore. I really don't care who takes home the American Idol title now.

Well last nite sucked! I agree. It is the kids who are voting. It would have done Melinda a lot of good to get into the bottom two so that people would have been prompted to vote more for her. I believe Blake got there once. People got lazy thinking she would win by a landslide.
I admit it. Unless I am totally blown away by a contestant I will not stay on that phone dialing over and over again and I did not do it this year. The last contestant I did that for was Carrie Underwood. But like someone here said the kids have nothing better to do.
I dont' care who wins. I don't care for either. I'm watching Dancing with the Stars and will read about who won American Idol.

Good Luck Milinda you will be a star and we will all be watching you. Simon tells it like it is and he is a great person to champion you and your singing. He never tells or says anything he does not mean and that is what I like about him. Good luck to all of the idols they are great kids and the world should be looking at these young people who are trying to make the news in a good way and we should be proud of them all.
