(S06E39) Last season's third place finisher Elliot Yamin showed up to perform on tonight's American Idol. He sounded truly grateful and sincere as he gave words of encouragement to the Final 3 contestants. And he served as a fitting reminder that finishing third on American Idol isn't such a bad thing. Someone has to go home tonight -- but it's not an ending for that finalist. It's really only the beginning of a career.
This time next year, I fully expect tonight's third place finisher to be on this same stage singing and promoting a CD and upcoming tour.
I just didn't expect the results to go the way they did tonight. And I never thought that this year's third place finisher would be...
MELINDA DOOLITTLE?!?!
Wow, what a shock. I couldn't believe it when Ryan told her it was the "end of the road." Ever since Sanjaya went home, most of the eliminations have been fairly predictable. But I really thought that Melinda was heading to the finale -- especially after last night. Simon thought so too. And so did most of our commenters.
According to the poll on last night's recap, an overwhelming majority (64%) of you thought that Blake was going to get the FEWEST votes. Melinda seemed to be super-safe. Which only tells me one thing: Blaker Girls aren't the ones reading my recap or taking part in online polls. They're too busy voting for their guy, Blake.
So it's JORDIN SPARKS vs. BLAKE LEWIS in the finale.
The odds makers were right. They did predict a Jordin/Blake finale. Will they also be right about Jordin winning this year's American Idol title? Yesterday, I thought Jordin was a sure thing, but now I just don't know. Will Jordin pick up Melinda's votes? Just how committed are Blake's fans? Could a beatboxer actually win this thing?
I guess we'll find out next week during the two-part season finale.
While I was truly sad to see Melinda go, I thought it was classy of Ryan to refer to her as "one of our best singers ever." And of course the judges had nothing but nice things to say about Melinda. Randy: "You were the most consistent all season, so be proud." Paula: "You have already made it." And Simon actually took time to congratulate the other two, but commiserated with Melinda, whom he called "one heck of a singer."
I'm pretty sure this is not the last we've seen or heard of Melinda Doolittle.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:
- Tonight's show started with an intro by Homer Simpson instead of Ryan Seacrest. I was sure this meant we were going to be in for another promo for The Simpsons Movie. It did not.
- THE TRIPS HOME -- Each finalist went home last week and were bestowed with many honors (parades, interviews, streets named after them). It looked like a pretty intense and grueling schedule for each of them, but they seemed to enjoy the attention and accolades. Up until now they've been kept in a bubble, so I'm sure it was overwhelming to see how much of an impact they've had back home. I really liked the "Seattle Rocks -- Simon Was Wrong" sign that Blake's fans brought to the celebration.
- ELLIOTT YAMIN -- He was sporting lots and lots of curls, and showing off those brand new sparkly teeth. He was also wearing a sweater vest. Have sweater vests come back into style? He sang "Wait for You" and sounded better than most of the other "legendary" mentors who have performed this year. And the judges gave him comments just for the heck of it. Randy said, "it was hot...welcome home." Paula was speechless, she was "so proud of him" she couldn't stand it. Simon said, "not great, I'm kidding, it was great."
- ELLIOT'S ADVICE -- He told the finalists "you've come so far...and this is only the beginning of great things to come." Elliot also thanked everyone. No, really, EVERYONE. Which prompted Ryan to ask if he wanted to thank Coca Cola or Ford. Elliot thanked Porsche, which caused Ryan to quip, "That's a no-no on this show."
- MAROON 5 -- They sang "Makes Me Wonder" and I'm sort of surprised the Idol producers let them sing a song with the lyrics: "And it really makes me wonder If I ever gave a f**k about you." Sure they didn't actually say the f-word, but still, it's not the most appropriate song for a "family show." Luckily, my kids were too bored by the results show to watch. However, I imagine other 10-year-old kids might want to download the song tomorrow, and their parents are going to be in for quite a shock.
- FORD COMMERCIAL -- Tonight's video featured the song "Everybody Wants You" and showed Blake, Melinda, and Jordin as children singing in their rooms. Okay, it wasn't really them as children. But there were three really cute kids who were perfectly cast as their younger counterparts.
OTHER TIDBITS:
- Tickets for The Idols Live Tour go on sale the weekend of May 19th.
- American Idol is looking for the best undiscovered band.
- Was that Jackie Collins in the audience?
- Blake's father is awesome. Too bad Ryan kicked him off the stage.
- Melinda is really, really gone. Bummer.
Next Wednesday: Season Finale Part 2 (8-10 PM ET)

It went quite well. I feel Jordin has the better voice and can sing anything. Hers is the only album I would bother to buy. I just cant take the screaming. It's not singing.

How could it be?!! I was totally shocked with last night's results that it "was the end of the road" for Melinda! She was in a league of her own. I do agree with others' that perhaps the comments made by the judges that the two girls would be at the end may have had an impact on how people voted. I don't think the votes for the other two contestants had anything to do with "sticking it to Simon". I think most people, although, maybe sometimes find Simon annoying in his comments - he is usually right on the money! It is all confusing to me because over half of the people polled thought Blake should have gone home, yet there he stands! Once again, I think the judges' comments inadvertantly had an impact on the voting. They probably thought there was NO WAY that Melinda was going home and that it had been predicted that it would come down to her and Jordin - therefore, people (not me) cast a lot of votes for Blake. I personally don't think her age or her song choices had anything to do with why she did not win. She most always came out with the best voice, you may have not liked her song choices, but that VOICE is amazing! This year has been a disappointment in many ways and I only hope that AI can keep some dignity by voting for Jordin in the end. I thought AI was a SINGING competition NOT a popularity contest - I think AI has lost a lot of respect due to this season. I hope Melinda goes on, as others who did not win, and come back and kick some major butt in sales! She is truly in a league of her own and not only her magnificant voice but her true kindness and lack of cockiness will be missed. I think some people have forgotten the TRUE meaning of what being an American Idol is - and for that it is ashame.

What the F*%$? I cannot believe Melinda was voted off!?!?!? She was obviously the better of the 3. I cannot stand Jordan Sparks, she reminds me of a spoiled little brat who certainly has more time to work on her singing career than Melinda did.
It makes me mad enough to purposely vote repeatedly for Blake, over and over for hours! What the hell is wrong with Americans? Do you not have any common sense, class or taste?
God.... get a damn clue!

Dear Simon,
Melinda was always TOO good a singer for this "IDOL" show. She was in a class by herself and you should have absolutely no problem marketing her. What you failed to recognize is that America is looking for youthful Idols who will RISE to stardom. Melinda was already there.
Blake is unique and deserves 2nd place now. Jordin grew into "Idol Stardom". She will continue to be a star we can watch become a great singer. And just for the record, you need to broaden your ability to judge newer music. Love that you are a truthful judge but please learn something about current music trends.

We-e-e-e-e-e-e-elllllllll, the upside to this is that Mindy-Doo can get busy recording that mega-super-smash album-to-be rather than waste her time singing against Screech and Screech-er. And as usual, Melinda's album will go on to sell millions more than the actual "winners" of Idol, just as every ___ runner-up since the show ever started has done.
YOU GO, GIRL!!!

I watched American Idol from the very beginning and every week thereafter....i truly believed that Melinda Dolittle was the WINNER from the beginning!!....I was shocked and saddened to see her go....she's a sweet person and a GREAT SINGER!!
Jordin and Blake are okay and can sing and was voted more from the younger group.....but i feel Melinda has more of a "professionalism" in her singing.....like Beyonce, Whitney Housten or Celine Dion.
I think the "majority" of people loved Melinda Dolittle and wanted her to win, but i don't think they voted.
I feel even though she came in 3rd....she will do way better than Blake or Jordin in the future....just watch and see:))

i think it's extremely rude of anyone to point out physical flaws on the idols they don't like.
commenters say Blake is gay because he always has his mouth wide open.
commenters say Jordin is fat and if she wins, hopefully her management makes her lose weight.
commenters say Melinda had no neck.
notice hardly anybody is talking about their actually singing ability. this is a popularity contest for sure, and the commenters that agree with that continue to pick at their physical flaws. why? it just shows you like/dislike them because of their appearance, not their voices.
they are all extremely different in style and positive all 3 will record an album.
but honestly, the only reason people are so harsh on these peoples looks is because that's all they CAN do. these 3 singers have better vocals than these rude commenters will ever have.

I am so glad to see Melinda gone. I was so sick of her and her so sure attitude;which was only compounded by Simon's comments. She was a good singer but it takes more than that to be an American Idol. I believe Simon helped her off the show by making everyone believe she was all that---Americans can think and judge for themselves. It was time for Melinda to go!

Valid comments; Melinda appeared to be best singer, along with Lakisha, but both sang the wrong type of songs for the audience. Programs might be better if they had two or three music categories with a winner in each type.
In regard to the teenies voting; make them pay for their phone votes themselves, rather than mommy and daddy and there would be far fewer votes. Am sure a few parents get some bills that are a "shock" to them sometime during the show's season.

I am surprised with the results but think it may have happened as many felt she was already a professional singer and wanted to give a litterally unknown a shot. Her "surprised" looks of false shock also was very annoying as she knew how good she was from the get go. Hello, she sang as back up singer for some name groups. You have to be good. I think thats what turned off a number of voters.

Seacrest did say " Next Melinda goes home" but the context was going home for the weekend as they showed of all 3 contestants "at home" You people are whinning about that and not getting it. AI wants ratings and cd sales. Of course their system sucks Greed usually does

I noticed the gaffe blurted by Ryan on Melinda's going home last night. I just assumed he was referring to her video of returning home for her hometown celebration. I 'd like to think he wasn't being facietious; but after his less than tactful behavior in dismissing Blake's father from the stage. I'd say let's vote for a new American Idol host. Frankly Ryan has gotten too full of himself. As for my reaction to Melinda going home, I'm just as shocked as Simon. We do need a separate Idol show. One for the screaming, over emotional teenyboppers and one for a more mature audience that can appreciate a quality vocalist such as Melinda. I will not be watching the finals along with quite a few thousand others. At this point, American Idol would be better if it to switched to a Disney channel where the kids can tune in and watch.

I am a big, big Blake fan-but was very surprised that he stayed- i figured people knew he would make it BIG anywhere-- even if he did not win and boot him- so the 2 best talents would remain. ///A soulful old soul-Melinda- and red hot young gorgeous new energetic clean fresh Jordin-- but again Jordin and Blake are appealing to a very MONEY SPENDING SCREAMING CRYING crowd or less than 20's-(year olds) so next year i hope for a JUDGES' VETO/OVERIDE power and so/that the Sanjia thing can never happen again.as it did hinder the whole show and many Excessively talented people were booted because of him. Next Year is "iffy" for me- I may not watch next year- because this year has truly been a real dragg of sorts. thanks-Tiebot10-St.Louis

Melinda only appealed to people over 50. She sings old, she looks old and her songs choices were skewed old.
Now, who votes most often on this show?
Young people...
Melinda wasn't robbed, the show isn't fixed. She just didn't appeal to the young voters. Even Taylor appealed to a younger audience than Melinda.

PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE - COME ON NOW.
MELINDA WAS EXCELLENT - BUT SAME OLD, SAME OLD STUFF - LIKE RUBIN AND WHO HEARS ABOUT HIM.
JORDIN IS AWESOME, BUT A LITTLE TOO OLD FASHIONED AT TIMES.
BLAKE IS MODERN AND HIP AND DOES BETTER MUSIC ALL AROUND.
THE BEST MAN WILL WIN!!!!!!!!!!!
PLUS, THAT WHOLE 'OMG, WAS I THAT GOOD ATTITUDE' HAS GOT TO GO. SHE NEEDS TO GET A LITTLE BIT MORE CONFIDENCE IN HERSELF TO BE AN IDOL. PLUS, I KIND OF THOUGHT THAT WAS A LITTLE BIT OF AN ACT.
