(S06E39) Last season's third place finisher Elliot Yamin showed up to perform on tonight's American Idol. He sounded truly grateful and sincere as he gave words of encouragement to the Final 3 contestants. And he served as a fitting reminder that finishing third on American Idol isn't such a bad thing. Someone has to go home tonight -- but it's not an ending for that finalist. It's really only the beginning of a career.
This time next year, I fully expect tonight's third place finisher to be on this same stage singing and promoting a CD and upcoming tour.
I just didn't expect the results to go the way they did tonight. And I never thought that this year's third place finisher would be...
MELINDA DOOLITTLE?!?!
Wow, what a shock. I couldn't believe it when Ryan told her it was the "end of the road." Ever since Sanjaya went home, most of the eliminations have been fairly predictable. But I really thought that Melinda was heading to the finale -- especially after last night. Simon thought so too. And so did most of our commenters.
According to the poll on last night's recap, an overwhelming majority (64%) of you thought that Blake was going to get the FEWEST votes. Melinda seemed to be super-safe. Which only tells me one thing: Blaker Girls aren't the ones reading my recap or taking part in online polls. They're too busy voting for their guy, Blake.
So it's JORDIN SPARKS vs. BLAKE LEWIS in the finale.
The odds makers were right. They did predict a Jordin/Blake finale. Will they also be right about Jordin winning this year's American Idol title? Yesterday, I thought Jordin was a sure thing, but now I just don't know. Will Jordin pick up Melinda's votes? Just how committed are Blake's fans? Could a beatboxer actually win this thing?
I guess we'll find out next week during the two-part season finale.
While I was truly sad to see Melinda go, I thought it was classy of Ryan to refer to her as "one of our best singers ever." And of course the judges had nothing but nice things to say about Melinda. Randy: "You were the most consistent all season, so be proud." Paula: "You have already made it." And Simon actually took time to congratulate the other two, but commiserated with Melinda, whom he called "one heck of a singer."
I'm pretty sure this is not the last we've seen or heard of Melinda Doolittle.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:
- Tonight's show started with an intro by Homer Simpson instead of Ryan Seacrest. I was sure this meant we were going to be in for another promo for The Simpsons Movie. It did not.
- THE TRIPS HOME -- Each finalist went home last week and were bestowed with many honors (parades, interviews, streets named after them). It looked like a pretty intense and grueling schedule for each of them, but they seemed to enjoy the attention and accolades. Up until now they've been kept in a bubble, so I'm sure it was overwhelming to see how much of an impact they've had back home. I really liked the "Seattle Rocks -- Simon Was Wrong" sign that Blake's fans brought to the celebration.
- ELLIOTT YAMIN -- He was sporting lots and lots of curls, and showing off those brand new sparkly teeth. He was also wearing a sweater vest. Have sweater vests come back into style? He sang "Wait for You" and sounded better than most of the other "legendary" mentors who have performed this year. And the judges gave him comments just for the heck of it. Randy said, "it was hot...welcome home." Paula was speechless, she was "so proud of him" she couldn't stand it. Simon said, "not great, I'm kidding, it was great."
- ELLIOT'S ADVICE -- He told the finalists "you've come so far...and this is only the beginning of great things to come." Elliot also thanked everyone. No, really, EVERYONE. Which prompted Ryan to ask if he wanted to thank Coca Cola or Ford. Elliot thanked Porsche, which caused Ryan to quip, "That's a no-no on this show."
- MAROON 5 -- They sang "Makes Me Wonder" and I'm sort of surprised the Idol producers let them sing a song with the lyrics: "And it really makes me wonder If I ever gave a f**k about you." Sure they didn't actually say the f-word, but still, it's not the most appropriate song for a "family show." Luckily, my kids were too bored by the results show to watch. However, I imagine other 10-year-old kids might want to download the song tomorrow, and their parents are going to be in for quite a shock.
- FORD COMMERCIAL -- Tonight's video featured the song "Everybody Wants You" and showed Blake, Melinda, and Jordin as children singing in their rooms. Okay, it wasn't really them as children. But there were three really cute kids who were perfectly cast as their younger counterparts.
OTHER TIDBITS:
- Tickets for The Idols Live Tour go on sale the weekend of May 19th.
- American Idol is looking for the best undiscovered band.
- Was that Jackie Collins in the audience?
- Blake's father is awesome. Too bad Ryan kicked him off the stage.
- Melinda is really, really gone. Bummer.

I was totally surprised by tonight's results. I pegged Melinda to take it all. Guess there's no accounting for taste.
The only consolation is that she's will be a success either way.

And I did think that Ryan was particulary rude to Blake's dad.

Wow I am shocked. But I am sort of not shocked. Melinda is a great singer. The best on the show...but she sings older songs and has an older style. I believe the shows demographic skews younger and that's where the also very talented Jordin and Blake come in. Melinda will have a great career. Of that there is no doubt.
Who will win? My guess is Jordin, but I think Blake will have a better selling album.

I was really hoping for a finale with Melinda and Jordin. Bummer.
I think Jordin's got it now. I can't see Melinda's fans heading toward Blake's corner.
Hopefully, Blake will get the opportunity to put out his own music and he can stop messing up everyone else's songs with that obnoxious beat-boxing. So 1980's.
I like both Melinda and Jordin, they're gonna go on to do great things.

I am sooooo not surprised Melinda went home tonight. I mean I was honestly annoyed by her. I just couldn't listen to her half of the time. Her falsetto is what did her in and made her boring to watch. I maybe the only one not upset but it's life. She will have a great career in gospel but not as an American Idol. If she would have won I think we would see another Ruben, Fantasia, and Taylor... they won but struggling to get an audience like Kelly or Carrie.

Maybe they'll be like other shows in the reality television genre and introduce a new twist... and Sanjaya will win it all!
Heehee.
I personally think the voting was possibly skewed by the judges' comments last night. Randy predicted all-girl finals and Simon wanted Melinda there. So that right there would get Blake fans voting heavily.

This competition has lost any shred of credibility with tonight's result, and it has also lost me as a viewer for the final week. Melinda was the best singer in the competition by several miles, with more talent than the remaining two contestants combined. She accepted her loss with grace and without self-pity, which is more than can be said for some of the others. And yes, I feel certain she has a bright future ahead of her.

I am in complete and utter shock! I thought for sure Melinda would be crowned this year's winner, but then again I thought the same last year of Chris Daughtry. Like Daughtry, Melinda was the predicted winner all along and she was eliminated when we least expected it, again just like Daughtry. I had a feeling there was going to be a shocker tonight, but I thought it might have been Jordin who was leaving. Oh well, I am still happy with the top two that are left. Both Jordin and Blake are good and either one will make a good idol. And like Liz noted here, finishing third can still guarantee success for Melinda, just like it did for Elliot Yamin. Heck, finishing fourth place can also guarantee success. Just look at Chris Daughtry. He didn't win last year's Idol, but so far he has blown Taylor Hicks and Katherine McPhee out of the water in record sales. So no worries, Melinda. You WILL have an album out next year and you WILL be more successful than Taylor and Ruben Studdard. I'm sure of it.

Okay, big confirmation for me that this show and the way the results are obtained are a joke. They've lost this viewer and a few others I know. Until Simon and the powers that be revamp the whole system---it's a waste of time. This is not a talent show...it's how many teeny boppers can make the most calls. You need more than one American Idol show, Simon--those who really have taste in music and those that vote popularity and "cuteness". Good riddance.

I'm a Melinda and Blake's fan and there are tonnes like me out there. Jordin doesn't do anything for me and I find her vocal generic and boring. Heck, you don't even need to look far...she sounded like Kat!
It's really upsetting because I was gunning for Melinda vs. Blake with Melinda taking it all (because Blake would do fantastic with or without the Idol title). But maybe Melinda will do well without the title too..maybe we'll see her take home 10 Grammys next year.

It's too bad. I voted for "mindy doo" too. It just proves that youth has the biggest impact on the show. Blake has 10 different fan sites including the blaker girls. And jordin is a 17 yr old getting the youth votes too. I'm still getting over lakisha getting voted off. I'm sorry but it should have been melinda vs lakisha. At this point I hope blake wins. Your cute and what not jordin, but when you go for the high notes you tend to scream a little. But I have love for all these people, and besides they all sing better then I could ever imagine too. Ps maroon 5....i'm sorry but that is not music. All of their songs have the same guitar and piano rifts, and his voice is way too high.

I have predicted the results almost every week. I predicted Blake, Jordan, & Melinda to be the top 3 and Blake and Jordan the top 2. So, I'm not surprised~! Melinda was great and she will continue to have a career. As most of us know- She just does did not have the total idol factor.
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE BLAKE BE THE NEXT IDOL. HE WILL NOT DISAPPOINT US~!!!!!!

That was an absolute travesty. Melinda Doolittle was the best vocalist this season by a huge margin.
American Idol needs to reconsider it's voting system. Dancing With the Stars allows each phone number and each computer a limited number of votes and I think Idol should do likewise.
I am thoroughly disgusted, and it's highly unlikely I will watch this show again.

I was truly surprised. I am sorry Melinda had to experience third place. However, I am excited to see which way the USA will vote....the best female, the very hip and talented male.

It's a young demo vote and it showed. Mel was robbed. She'll get a recording deal and be playing Las Vegas before we know it, but it is very disappointing.

I think you can all agree that I called that one. With all the Blaker girls text votes and all the Jordin supporters (including me) I had no doubt that Melinda would be going home. Not to say it is fair, but, she just is not "Idol" material.
I am pleased because it appears Jordin will go on to win...she will garner Melinda's votes...
I really enjoyed Elliott's music tonight. What a refreshing change and he sure looks good and very happy!

people need to stop being surprised. i mean melinda has a much older audience. yes, she most likely belonged in the top 2. i used to be a blake fan in the first weeks, but his style got really old with me and i started paying more attention to jordin. she is the surefire winner. i WILL be shocked if he goes home with the title AMERICAN IDOL. anywho, back to melinda. she belonged in the top two but i know by the amount of votes by those ridiculous "blaker girls" that thats why he stayed in. the votes that have kept melinda in the comp. will either vote for jordin or stop there votes altogether. BUT IF YOU WANT AMERICAN IDOL TO KEEP IT'S DIGNITY, VOTE FOR JORDIN PLEASE. she has the most POTENTIAL. i can see her being the next kelly clarkson. i mean not to be rude, but if she loses some weight...
which im sure her management will force upon her so nothing i have to worry about.
she is a beautiful girl with a wonderful shape, but if she just toned a little more. but i dont want her to be super skinny. it's important to have someone a little heftier be an "idol" for girls and women.
anyways thats my rant, vote for jordin sparks, and yeah im done.
peace.

I am with everyone on being completely blown away by the results tonight. I thought that it would actually be Melinda & Blake. Jordin bit it last night, and Mindy Doo & Blake got my votes.
My best friend & I are avid watchers of the show and are at odds with my lack of enthusiam for Jordin. I find her shrieky - she hits every note with a bit of a scream that drives me crazy. I also argued that out of the 3 of them I would be more apt to buying a Blake album & a Mindy album. Blake's cause he has a Jason Mraz style to him that I just love. It's an original sound that just makes me drawn to him. Mindy Doo is just amazing & the judges hit it on the head last night with the comments about her being a new Tina Turner - which is something that is so missing in music today.
My thing with Jordin is that even though she is a great singer, she is very generic. I like the diva singers & R&B but if I want that I will wait for the next Whitney cd. I think that with a lot of training to smooth her voice out that she could do really well, but right out of the box I think that Melinda & Blake can do much more than one style of music.
If you've made it this far I appreciate you reading this. I will now step off the soapbox for someone else to hop up on. :)

I'm sad, sad, sad that Melinda is gone. She is amazing ... no other words to describe her. It's like I don't even care who wins now ... it's completely anticlimactic for me.
BTW, did anyone notice Ryan's HUGE gaffe when he was going into a commercial break and said something like "We'll be right back with Maroon 5 and Melinda goes home" ... I chalked it up to him trying to be funny, but now I don't know ...

Just goes to show us all in America that our kids need music lessons badly. They're tone deaf and don't know what music is. Sad, sad, sad. The show is over for this year.
