I'm going to do my best to try and avoid using the words "gnarly" and "cowabunga," but I can't promise anything. You should be excited though because John From Cincinnati is going to be good. The new "surf noir" drama from David Milch has finally been scheduled and it's set to premiere at 10PM following The Sopranos series finale on Sunday, June 10. So far we here at TV Squad have been pretty high on this show. Can you blame us? Besides the fact that it's coming from the mastermind behind Deadwood, we're talking about a show about surfing and people who levitate. Yes, levitate. Last time I checked, that means "float." Crazy, huh? Add to that a cast that includes Bruce Greenwood, Rebecca De Mornay, Luis Guzman, and Ed O'Neill and it looks like HBO may have its next hit. Sounds like they know it too. It's been given a full 10 episode first season and I doubt very much that airing after The Sopranos series finale is a time-slot that's just given to any ol' show. Make a note though because the show moves to its regular time-slot at 9PM the following week. Gnarly, huh?

I've been wondering what this show is exactly about, and I still don't know, guess i'll have to wait until it starts in June.

I've no interest in this show. No idea what it's about and only seen the billboards, which don't elicit any interest. Why would HBO think people would watch this?

I'm one of those people who are pissed about the fact that Deadwood was canceled. So tell me again why I should watch this when HBO just dropped Deadwood? I know Milch is great, so I might catch it on DVD (rent it and burn the copies) but why should I even tune in!?

So if this will premiere after the Sopranos, what happens to Entourage? Will this "season" be over by then already!??

I think Entourage takes a two week hiatus and comes back with the new season while this show starts?
I think.

What the hell? A show you've never seen is OVER? A show someone knows NOTHING about means no one will watch it? There are lots of shows I knew nothing about at some point that became favorites.
I doubt "John From Cincinnati" will be as good as Deadwood and was furious when it was axed (Btw, HBO's Albrecht resigned in disgrace this week) but if you like Milch's writing you HAVE to be a little curious, don't you?
At any rate, how could it NOT be better than the last few seasons of The Sopranos?

The show is not set in Cincinnati, it is set in the surfing community of Imperial Beach, CA. I for one am interested in seeing it.

Since I am (a) John from Cincinnati, I will be looking for authenticity from shots around the city (and here,we do mean shots) bang, bang.

I disagree. Rather than reviewing a show while its still on, (which means you are currently missing key plot points) I actually waited for it to be over.
The first episode was great. No, you don't have a clue what's going on with the levitation, the dead bird coming back to life, or the 'john' character seeming to have the ability to pull money from nowhere, but something tells me these will be explained.
The characters are fascinating. The Vietnam vet who ferries illegals from the beach in his van for profit, the drugged out surfer who was lead down the wrong path by fame and its trappings, the wise and scarred surfer patriarch, and the young prodigy who seems to be oblivious to the chaos around him.
I like the fact that they are all obviously very poor, but don't seem to mind. For once a show where all the characters don't drive BMW's and Cadillacs.
I loved the last scene of the show, where they are all doing the one thing that unites them, surfing.
This show is different from anything I've ever seen on TV, and I loved it.

This show is absolutely horrible. Whomever greenlighted this should be fired. Poor story arcs and plot, poor casting, and average acting at best. I can't believe the head of programming at HBO would think that this show was better than Deadwood and/or Carnivale. Don't waste your time this show is worthless. I'd give it 1/2 out of 4 stars.

For a show to be successful, it should have broader mass appeal....just don't see this happening here unless something happens FAST. (But just how many people will tune in even the second time to find out???) Great cast, but story line just not appealing enough for the long haul. Just a little too "quirky" to be a hit.

Give the show a chance. Milch is brilliant, right? so let's see where he takes this one. I like the idea that this family is an organism- interdependent, and the magic realism stuff doesn't bother me either. Milch is a visionary in my book and I'm willing to go with this one for a while without judgement. Sure I want Deadwood back. I also want my youth back, my first boyfriend back, etc. but change is what we need to stay open to, right?

I watch the first two episodes and the series looks OK. but im pretty sure its going to turn up to be a great series. Look at Carnivale that show took awhile to start up and it's an amazing show that's a must bring back, anything to finish it.

I must say I was very dissappointed with the first two shows. The acting is awful!! Especially the shawny kid. It's choppy. The characters are bland and stereotypical. How could they cancel Deadwood for this crap? This show blows.
