(S18E20)
Bart: You can't send him away. He's a dog, not Grandpa.
Special hint: if you're ever lost in a giant maze (corn or otherwise) you can find your way out simply by keeping your hand on the wall and walking.
You know, if Santa's Little Helper is the main focus of an episode, chances are it's not going to be very good. I didn't laugh very much during this episode, but here's what I did like:
-
The man exposed at the cornucopia contest exposed for "stuffing his horn"
-
Homer freaking out in the maze when Marge says they should "split up" (she means they should "split up" to find their way out, Homer thinks she wants a divorce)
-
The police animal training school scene where dogs attack Eddie (in a protective suit), followed by horses and crocodiles doing the same
-
Santa's Little Helper filled out the police report himself?
-
The pet shop owner keeping the python on a wheel and selling it by the foot like twine
-
The Microsoft paper clip popping up on the computer screen as the python swallows it: "you look like you're trying to eat me. Need some help?"
The rest of the episode, though, felt really flat, and Santa's Little Helper was way out of character. The Santa's Little Helper I know is not nearly as smart as the dog in this episode. He's loyal and fun-loving, yes, but he's also rather dumb, which is part of his charm, and also the reason he works better in small doses, rather than the main focus of the entire episode.
At least the double episodes next week, "24 Minutes" and "Kent Always Say What You Want" look promising. I'll give this episode a 4 out of 7 and wait for something better next week.

The family dog joins the police because of his sensitive nose and gets too caught up in it? Now which show is copying which?

If you are stuff in a corn maze I have an easier thing to do. Just continue to watch straight in one direction until you reach the outside. :)

that's wierd - i thought this was about the best episode since maybe "bart gets fat" a few years ago.
the snake was great, the tossing lisa in the maize maze was funny, the adultish "the shield" (I guess) ripoff scenes with Lou and the dog were pretty decent, and the police academy scenes were funny.
Santa's Little Helper was a bit smarter than usual, like the climbing of the slide and actually catching the frisbee, but i think they could have remedied that by having the frisbee hit him in the head when he and Bart were playing - playing it like he's relatively smart, he's just not good at frisbee.
It had the best simpsons line in a while too -
Bart: "touch it lisa, he's not slimy, he's actually scaly"
Lisa: "eewww, he is slimy!"
Bart: "that's because I covered him in slime!!!"

That's funny. I was going to mention the fact that I grew up on a farm and that it is possible to just walk through cornstalks. :)

It's getting to where it's almost painful to watch the old shows from seasons 2 to about 8 or 9. it pains me to remember how good the show used to be in comparison to how crappy it's become.
good call on the copy. plus we already saw a member of the Simpson family become a cop so this one was a 2 for 1 copy!!!

yeah, but the episode where Marge became a cop wasn't very good, so there was room for improvement.

Helper goes into the maze trying to find Homer with the long tracking
shots and Linkin Park-esqe music?

I need to ask: Why do the people who do nothing but bitch and whine that the show is nowhere near as good as it used to be still watch? I mean, other than so they can go on a blog and complain in the comments. I repeatedly see people complain about the Simpsons, or Family Guy, or Stargate, or what have you, about how the show should be cancelled, and the reviewer should be drawn and quartered for finding it funny, and all I can think is "how sad that you have so little in your life but to watch shows you apparently hate." When I no longer find a show interesting, I stop watching it, but I guess that makes me the crazy one.
Oh, and while it is not (yet) relevant here, the same goes double for people who not only dislike the show, but read reviews by people who they think are unqualified to do so. You don't like the reviews, don't read them.
Sorry for interjecting reason and logic on the internet, where the clearly have no place.

Are you kidding me, the episode where Marge became a cop is one of the best ever. "You missed the baby, you missed the blind guy." So many great lines from that one.

Also in that episode (where Marge became a cop), another great line: "What, what, what, what... this better be about pizza!"
I quote this episode all the time.

J, I think the music was "Freak on a Leash" by a band called Korn. Not a bad musical joke, but not the Simpson's best either.

I knew it was a Korn song and I totally didn't make the corn/Korn connection. Shame on me.

I got a laugh when they brought the police dolphin to Cletus' domestic disturbance.
btw, anyone know what algorithm they said they used to get out of the maze?

i watch because i keep hoping it will get better. some part of me that is grateful for the quality show they put out for a decade or so feels i owe it to them to see if they pull out of this nosedive. maybe i'm hanging on a bit too long. probably. the show has been getting progressively worse and worse and maybe i need to just accept the show i loved is gone. it's kinda hard to accept, i've been watching the show since high school and it's always been there for laughs. now it's just there.

I still find The Simpsons funny, but I find many of the jokes very dated. Where as I get them I can see where many people wouldn't. Like "Freak on a leash" that was on Korn's 98 "Follow the leader Album.

See, for me, Santa's Little Helper being the focus of an episode is a signal it's going to be *good*. I didn't watch this ep, but I wish I had.

Actually, we've also seen an episode where the Simpson family dog (Laddie) becomes a cop.
