You would think that the early, painful demise of The Nine, Kidnapped, Smith, Six Degrees, and other new dramas this season that there would be more comedy pilots picked up for the 2007 season. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, that's not the case.
Except for some solid buzz from a handful of comedies, including ABC's Sam I Am, ABC's Cavemen and Miss/Guided, and several shows at CBS, it looks like more dramas will make the schedule, including NBC's Bionic Woman and Journeyman, ABC's Dirty Sexy Money and Pushing Daisies, CBS' Babylon Fields, The Man, and Viva Laughlin. The new Jimmy Smits drama might replace Close To Home on Fridays, while FOX has the much-hyped Sarah Connor Chronicles, K-Ville, and Them.
The big comedy news, if you can call it "big" news, is the The Knights of Prosperity might not be dead after all! ABC is thinking of bringing it back, only with Ray Romano in the Mick Jagger role.

Solid buzz as in "it's going to be picked up as a series," not that it's the next Seinfeld. We all know that bad shows make it on the air all the time (I haven't seen Cavemen, but that's the word on it).

The lack of comedy pilots is concerning. And the ones that are up for next season mostly have no laugh tracks. Why are networks shying away from the standard sitcom?

Thanks, David. I actually wasn't slamming Bob -- I just wanted clarification on what "solid buzz" actually is. I guess I like bad TV too, because I was kinda hoping Studio 60 would get some more time to develop into a solid series. Don't hold it against me. I like Aaron Sorkin's ideas and he's a pretty good writer. It seems like more and more studios are banking on instant, overnight success; rather than the formula of the 80s and 90s to let a series marinate and develop and flesh out its characters over the first one or two seasons before it becomes a bona fide hit. I have seen that mentioned a time or two here before, referring to Seinfeld, The West Wing, Friends, and some of the other defining shows of various generations.

I'm far far more reluctant to watch a new drama than I am a new comedy. Apart from the fact that most dramas these days are just amazingly bleak, depressing, graphic and violent... CSI autopsy porn get tiresome really fast... the networks are WAY too quick to pull the plug if the numbers aren't right immediately.
The networks lost me a few years ago when they cancelled John Doe at the end of the season with NO resolution to the cliff-hanger... but HBO lost me when it pulled the plug on Carnivale at the end of Season Two... after the Sopranos ends I'm gone :)

You better not be screwing with us. I would love it if that actually came back somehow. I really enjoyed what we saw of season 1, with a bit of tweaking that show could really be something special.
