Despite what Best Week Ever says, Grindhouse co-director Robert Rodriguez is not directing a live-action version of the popular Hanna-Barbera cartoon The Jetsons. He was, however, shown the script and says he might be interested in it. This is just one of many projects being offered to him, so it remains to be seen if we'll be seeing a Rodriguez-directed film with the likes of George, Jane, Judy, Elroy, Astro, Rosie, Mr. Spacely, Mr. Cogswell and Orbity, the Scrappy-Doo of the Jetson's universe (and I liked both characters, I'm just saying they were polarizing).
The Jetsons, like its predecessor The Flintstones, originally aired in primetime. It only lasted on ABC for one season and then was replayed Saturday mornings before it was brought back for a syndicated run in the '80s.
I'm torn about this one. Most of me wishes Hollywood would stop with the remakes already and churn out some new ideas, but on the other hand, I think Rodriguez can be a very hip and imaginative director, so maybe he could do something with this no one else would think of.
What do you guys think?
NOTE: Rodriguez might also direct a movie version of Sid and Marty Krofft's Land of the Lost, starring Will Ferrell. Funny enough, Ferrell played "Marshall Willenholly" in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, a clever reference to the characters Marshall, Will and Holly from Land of the Lost.

OK, let's assume they go ahead and make the movie. Let's talk casting...
Ten years ago Scott Bakula would have made a great George. Now I'm not so sure. And of course, Mr. Spacely will have to be played by Danny DeVito. The rest of the human casting almost doesn't matter. They'll find an attractive MILF-type for Jane, some "tween" actress from Disney Channel or Nickolodeon for Judy and an unknown kid for Elroy. Astro will be CGI and the voice of Rosie will be someone with a distinct voice, like a Rosie O'Donnell. And of course, Christopher Walken as Henry, the building superintedant.

In order to stay true to the cartoon Matthew Broderick would play George. The movie would be so campy, he's the only one who stands a chance at pulling it off. As bad as Inspector Gadget was, he's the only one who could have played him.
Jane would be played by someone who looks like a plain Jane, not a MILF. She wasn't supposed to be a "hot" character. She definately has to be cute.
I agree Judy would have to be a Disney/Nick star. Someone along the lines of Hilary Duff, but, I believe she may be too old for the role.
Elroy would be an unknown. He'd be the break out star, too.
Rosie needs to be voiced by the same person, if at all possible.
Spacely needs to be either Devito or Vern Troyer with another voice dubbed over.

Back in the early days of MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, I had this hope that Al Bundy would drift off to sleep and have a JETSONS dream.
The Bundys WERE the Jetsons, Al = George, Peg = Jane, platinum blonde Kelly = Judy, Bud - Elroy, Buck = Astro Marcy could have appeared as Rosie.....
Would have been perfect.....

Danny Devito as Mr. Spacely for sure! Matthew Broderick would be OK as George Jetson. William H. Macy has the demeanor for George Jetson but may be a bit too old. I think Will Ferrel would play George Jetson a little to slap sticky! Jim Carry would be a gamble but has more than enough ability to pull it off.
Hears one to ponder. Tom hanks as George Jetson. I know he is a bit old now for the part but Mr. Hanks has the ability to transform his body to fit the roll. Just look at Castaway or Philadelphia. Even his voice is similar to George Jetsons.
As much as I think Rosie O'Donnell is a crazy nut, I think her voice is well suited for Rosie.
I am afraid, along with seemingly everyone else in various forums on this subject, that it will be turned into a Flintstones-like movie. Maybe Robert Rodriguez would be just radical enough to keep it from that but if SpyKids is any indication of what the Jetsons would be like, then we don't need it!
Keeping the movie true to the original vision is impotant for this movie. The vision of the future from the perspective of the 1950's is the look of the original cartoon and that needs to be kept for the set design and computer graphics on this movie. What's Peter Jackson up to these days? Just kidding!
