(S01E21) Every week I walk away with a bit of a headache after watching Heroes. It's not a bad headache by any means. It's more of a sensory/information overload kind of a thing since each episode is filled to the brim with so many details.
That being said, the show is so entertaining, I find the discomfort completely worth it.
This episode found Hiro and Ando back in present day New York City after their foray into the future. They set off to try and accomplish, "the hard part", but little did they know the hard part would have them face to canvas to face with Sylar not once, but twice within the episode. Even more impressive was the fact that the second time Sylar and Hiro were face to face, it was by Hiro's own doing. He's come a long way in a little time or maybe that should be in "a lot of time" if you factor in his time travel.
I thought I was going to have a coronary during both instances. Knowing Sylar could hear the faintest of sounds during the first meeting, then seeing a frozen Sylar's beady eye move when he was supposed to be frozen during the second meeting was tension filled television at its finest.
Of course, as viewers we realize the show has to play out as Isaac/Sylar/Peter's paintings dictate, so we knew the final battle between Hiro and Sylar would have to wait until another day. Sometimes it's a curse to be in the know on these things.
On a side note, I found it interesting when Sylar was in "Geordy La Forge mode" painting the future and we saw that his artistic style was strikingly different than the more cartoon like portraits found in Isaac's paintings. Thought it was a nice little detail the producers threw in there considering most people tend to paint differently. The show is probably full of similar instances I fail to see.
The thing I found most intriguing about this episode was the temporary conflict that Sylar went through when he discovered he would potentially be the cause of the Apocalypse in New York City. Sylar was an innocent little watchmaker for like five minutes. Since that point, we've only known him to be evil.
The glee that can be seen his eyes every time he kills someone and steals their powers is a testament to this evil. Up until now, he hardly seemed to have a compassionate strand of DNA in his body.
To a large extent by episode end, we found out Sylar still epitomizes evil, but for that brief moment it was compelling to witness the moral struggle he appeared to be going through. It was a bit unexpected.
It was also good to see the relationship between Sylar and his mother. It seemed like the show was trying to convey that Sylar's mom pushed him to this point, but I'm not entirely sure it portrayed that convincingly enough.
Moving on, I'm the kind of viewer who wants to reject a new character that gets injected into a show this late in the season. Molly was a bit of exception because she has a pretty fascinating power - not to mention a power that I would love to exploit.
One word. Paparazzi. If I had this girls powers and I always knew where everyone on the planet resided, I'd be selling pictures of Paris Hilton, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Alba, and the lot of other famous people to Star Magazine left and right. I won't even talk about the torment I'd cause ex-girlfriends...but I digress.
We also learned that Mohinder's sister had the exact same nucleotide ailment Molly is suffering from and that Mohinder's father developed a cure but much too late. Then we were hit with the bombshell that Molly is the only one who can stop Sylar.
What? Now I find myself wondering who will really end up stopping Sylar. Will it be Hiro? Will it be Peter? Will it be Molly? On top of that, is Peter or Sylar going to go nuclear?
l'm also curious to see why Nathan called Linderman saying, "we have a problem" (I knew this guy could never be trusted), how Micah's powers fit into Linderman's plan, and why the shape shifter only now unveiled the fact that she can also make people see what she wants them to see. It seems like that power alone could have been used for some much more nefarious activity throughout the series. Wish it would have come out a little earlier.
I'm sure all of those questions and more will be answered next week, and more than likely, a whole slew of new questions will pop up that bring us all back for season two.
The final scene where Peter was on the verge of spontaneous combustion with Claire, HRG, Matt, and Ted watching in shock was a nice climatic place to end. If you ask me, the easiest solution at that point would have been for someone to put a cap in Ted's dome, but that's just me. Seems if you killed the guy who causes Peter to explode, Peter wouldn't explode. I'm just saying.
Was anyone able to catch what Sylar painted in blood on the floor of his mother's house? I couldn't make it out, but would love to hear what you guys thought it was.
Eight months of television converged to bring us another content packed episode. Despite being a lot of information to digest, I give the episode a 6 as it was very entertaining and suspenseful at points. Can't wait to see what happens next week.

To answer some of your questions:
The "shape shifter," Candice, has always been projecting images rather than changing her shape. She's used her powers to hide people from view, but her ability to mess with Micah's perception of the building and keep coming back was a cool new use of it (as was her threat to make him see stuff that would mess him up for life).
Sylar painted the nuke going off on the floor in blood.
And I don't think Molly is to help stop Sylar at all. She's the "device" that Ted, Bennett, and Parkman are after. In the future, all the people with abilities are being hunted down as part of "the Linderman Act," and I believe it's Molly's ability that's letting them do it. I think they just told Mohinder what he needed to hear to be motivated to help her.

Sylar painted a mushroom cloud in his mothers blood. Beyond creepy. So if Molly Walker is the tracking device HRG and pals are looking for, how exacly will that help them? And how is she the only one who can stop Sylar? Maybe her power is able to see through Candice's power of illusion which he has adopted and let's our Heros/Hiro kill him while he is impersinating President Petrelli. Or will Linderman come in and use his powers to heal Sylar?? I think I read it here a few weeks ago but it seems that Micah's role will be to rig the election for Nathan. I am very interested to see how Mother Petrelli is invovled in all this and what her power(s) may be. The online graphic novels revelaed the connection between Nathan & Peter's father and Linderman ... Can't wait until next Monday!!

Remember, Paker and HRG called the tracking system the "Walker System." It's pretty obvious that Linderman & Co. are using her, likely against her will, to track the other heroes.
And, as the first poster said, there's no reason to assume that Thompson was being honest when he claimed that Molly's the only one who can stop Sylar. He was simply being realistic—Mohinder wouldn't have helped if he knew that Walker was actually being used by the bad guys.

How does Micah fit in?
I assume it's got something to do with rigging the voting system. Because of his power he can hypothetically vote thousands or millions of times by just touching a voting machine giving Petrelli the win.

Molly isn't really a new character, is she? Isn't that the same little girl that Matt Parkman found and saved in the episode that introduced him? Rember the father that had his head Sylar-ized, I wonder what his power was and if Sylar knew that she had a power as well. She was seen again in the episode where Sylar was almost caught by Audrey and Matt. Now we know her name and her power, and it's really cool to see elements from the early episodes pan out now.

A slow episode, character development for Sylar, stepping back and seeing through his eyes, his madness. Slow, but not bad.
Yeah, Candice is an illusionist, as mentioned here often. Notice that sometimes the entire world blurs, sometimes just her. It all depends on what she is casting. Actually, I suppose we learned today that she isn't an illusionist, she gets inside people's heads more than simply that.
Sylar drew NYC being nuked in the blood, almost identical to the drawing in Isaac's floor. An incredible, gorey detail from what has been one of the goriest shows in prime time.
Show really picked up with that, then on to Peter. The look of terror on Ted was great. I think they've done a good job with his character (like finally un-geicoing him.) I think we're all aware that it is Peter, not Sylar that explodes, so stopping Sylar isn't important. It's stopping Peter. Although it appears that Peter will learn to focus this power in the first ten minutes of the next episode, talked down by Ted, so who knows where it will go. Obviously big powers want this explosion to happen, so I can see them feeding Ted's brain to Sylar then making it happen. Sylar's snapped beyond repair now that he's killed mom, anyway.
Molly is just there to track people. She can pinpoint where Sylar and Ted are at any time, allowing the corporation to bring the two together with minimal problem. She's a great asset to the corporation, as she can locate any mutant at any time. Good news for whoever controls her, bad news for anyone trying to hide.
You hear that, invisible man?

I though this was actually quite a sub-par episode, but considering the absolute magic we saw last week, I suppose it was hard to follow.
I just felt this whole ep really went nowhere and brought us nothing that wasn't obvious.
We know Claire isn't going to Paris, we know Peter will absorb Ted's ability at one point or another. And just to tie into a point made in the article, we knew Hiro wasn't going to kill Sylar, because it doesn't happen until after the election. We know Peter's not going to explode, because he doesn't until after the election.
I felt the whole thing with Sylar and his momma was a little bit forced, and was clearly trying to squeeze quick sympathy for our villain. Everyone has to be somewhat redeemable, no matter how evil, so I understand why we went into Sylar's past. But becoming a super-human killing machine because your mom says you're special, pshhhh, most kids in the world should be like that then...
This all just felt like one big set up for the rest of the season.
And I can't argue with it. There have been fantastic episodes for a long time now, practically all season, no doubt there was going to be one episode along the way that made me go, meh...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're right commenter 5, that the girl is the same one that Parkman found in his intro episode, or at least that's what I thought when she was reintroduced.
I can't wait for next week, it should be good. A sign of that is for the second week in a row, i watched Heroes live and recorded 24. I would have never immaged doing that this time last year, but it just shows how good Heroes has been the last few episodes.

Slow episode. It feels like they should just skip this one and go straight to the next one. Too much unnecessary dialogues which goes nowhere (ie. Peter and Claire).

A good episode. Except for Hiro being such a wussy. It's enough to drive me to drink! Well, not really. But still.
Peter is just rockin' the house with his character, imo. Well done by him all episode.
The Patrelli mother was stone cold. I am looking forward to learning all about how she fits in next season.
I'd like to see Nathan fly in, save Peter by taking him out to sea and dumping him or what not (not sure if Peter can die, even from a radiation blast - unless he vaporizes).
I'm a bit confused about what will happen regarding Sylar. Is it really all about killing off all the other heroes by eating their brains and taking all their powers until he is the very last "mutant" on the planet? Or is he content to become immortal and leave the rest alone?

Is anyone else curious about the possible Biblical references in this show? Linderman's Hotel (or casino or whatever...I forget) is called Corinthians. I didn't take time to scour any connections or references to the book yet...sorry. Also, Sylar's first name is Gabriel. Obviously, Gabriel is the angel who both predicted the future to Daniel in the Old Testament and spoke to Mary and Joseph respectively about the pending birth of Jesus in the Gospels. There is also Isaac's name - he's the son of Abraham. God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac but stopped him at the last moment, testing Abraham's loyalty to Himself. This passage from Hebrew's is interesting:
17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned." 19 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death (Hebrews 11:17-19).
Oh yeah, also Parkman has a Biblical name (Matthew) as do Peter and Nathan. Peter being one of Jesus inner circle of James, John, and Peter; he was also the one Jesus said he would found the church upon. He was the most pivotal and significant of the disciples. He's also considered by the Catholic church to be the first Pope. And Peter was also the one who Jesus told would deny him three times before the rooster crowed on the night of His betrayal. There are several Biblical Nathan's; the most important being God's prophet to King David who rebuked David for his adultery. David also had a son named Nathan from whom Jesus directly descended. David and Nathan's line also, of course, descended directly from Isaac and Abraham.
Also, Eden and Micah are both obviously Biblical names. I don't have the time right now but I'm sure there something interesting in the Book of Micah. And what Eden parallels might there be?
I don't know...I have no clue the relevance of all this, I just find the apparent connections fascinating. Can anyone else expound?

Kinda creepy that you'd use Molly's power to stalk people. I'd probably use it in conjunction with Hiro's power to track down Hitler or somebody evil. Different strokes.
Good episode and despite the liberal cribbing from some of my favorite comics, I love this show. It's really progressed from its first episode. Can't wait to hear what they have planned for the second season.

I agree with what some others have said: We have no reason to believe the little girl Molly has any part in stopping Sylar. Remember, the man that said that is the same man that told Nathan they WANT half of NYC to explode as part of their plan. That obviously means that anything he told Mohinder about the little girl stopping Sylar isn't true.
Of course the little girl will have to die if Sylar kills Nathan and starts acting the part of president, because the girl can see through his cloaking power and see his true identity.

#9 - Who cares if we know Claire isn't going to Paris or Hiro isn't going to kill Sylar? Is that any reason for these scenes to not be shown?
I guess you must not be a fan of long books, then.
Personally, I loved this episode, and particularly its little moments. The "who the hell is Ted?" and "you can fly?" scenes come immediately to mind.

The Sylar story with his mother was incredibly boring but I liked the rest.

#19. I got the impression Peter hasn't been around Ted long enough to fully replicate his power. Peter only started glowing when he was in close proximity to him hence my comment.
