Al Jean talks about The Simpsons

simpsonsIn a recent conference call, Simpsons writer and producer Al Jean spoke about the upcoming 400th episode, titled "Kent Always Say What You Want" (the title was originally "The Kent State Massacre" but that was changed for obvious reasons).

The episode airs May 20 at 8:30 p.m. and is preceded by the 24 spoof "24 Minutes" featuring guests Kiefer Sutherland and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

In "Kent Always Say What You Want," local news anchor Kent Brockman says a vulgarity on the air, which prompts Ned Flanders to stage a boycott that gets Kent kicked off the air. That sounds an awful lot like the recent kerfuffle surrounding Don Imus, but Al Jean said the idea for the episode was actually pitched to him a year ago.

Nevertheless, he did offer his thanks to Imus: "I have to give Don Imus a huge thank you for making our episode incredibly timely."

And for all you nerds out there (of which I am one), Jean says this is indeed the 400th episode.

"For the first time, when we say something is a milestone, it actually is that. When we aired the 300th episode it was actually the 302nd and the 350th was actually the 351st, but the honest-to-god 400th episode of the Simpsons airs at 8:30 on May 20th."

Jean also spoke a little about The Simpsons movie, which he says they are still working on, adding tweaks here and there to make it something worthy of The Simpsons. He also said that the movie would be rated, at most, PG-13, and that they wanted it to be accessible to all appropriate ages. The movie comes out July 27.
