There are reportedly two versions of The Office season finale-- one where Karen leaves and one where she stays. The reason isn't so much about storytelling as it is about the uncertain future of Rashida Jones, who plays Karen. She starred in a pilot called The Rules for Starting Over for Fox and now is waiting to see whether it's being picked up. Kristen over at E! Online says it's a good chance Fox will pick up the comedy. We'll know what happens on May 17th when Fox reveals its fall schedule.Soapbox time: I'd like to see Karen go. I like Rashida Jones, but it feels like her character is doing nothing but treading water these days. With Karen gone, there's even more of a reason for tension between Jim and Pam because they will have to decide whether to act on the opportunity to hook up. If Karen stays, I'm fine with that too, but I hope something juicy happens in the season finale to spice up her relationship with Jim and her coworkers.
Do you want Karen back next season on The Office?
[Thanks, Chris W.!]

Keep her and kill off that pathetic whiner Pam. In fact, having Roy violently kill Pam would be a realistic and fitting end to that spineless, sad-sack, useless lump of a character.
Karen's smart, sassy and fun. She is the kind of girl Jim would really end up with. Pam is the sort of girl who will always be a receptionist and will always date blue collar types.

I loved her character early this season. She had the same kind of humor Jim had, like when she did the paper clip explosion. But now they've turned her into a wet blanket for Jim.
So, if they're gonna keep her as a downer, boot her off. But if they bring back the humor keep her, especially if it goes to an hour.
Also, cheers for more Creed lately, Jeers for no Bob Vance. Where was he yesterday, when some perv was showing his lady his doodle?

Just let her go...I watched "The Dundies" earlier today (season 2 ep. 1) and the playfulness and the flirting between Pam and Jim was awesome. I want to see that back. They don't need to get together and they don't need to be all angsty about the 800lb Gorilla (Jim's "Casino Night" confession). They just need to get back to having fun which honestly has been what The Office has been missing all season.

I'm agreed with #2.
Karen was a more fun and interesting character at the beginning of the season, and hasn't had much to do since. However I'd also add that Pam hasn't had all that much in terms of lighthearted fun either, until the last episode.
I do hope Karen returns. I suspect that part of the reason she's not that funny now is because she's just "Jim's girlfriend" rather than a long-term character. If they have they decide to keep her around, I suspect she'll become more fleshed-out as a person.

Be interesting to see if they ever show the alternate episode as a "Lost AU episode". :)

I'm not sure what happened to the sassy girl we met in Stamford. It seems like ever since Karen got to Scranton she's been nothing but Jim's girlfriend. I've been ready to say goodbye to her for a long time. I don't even need Jim and Pam together right away, but let's at least get rid of Karen so they can get back to their fun loving, pranking ways.

They can get rid of Karen and they can get rid of Andy. I can't stand either one of them. Once they introduced these two, the show lost something. Karen always looks like she smelled something funny, and come to think of it, Andy looks like that too.
What's with Jan being all sex freak? Where the heck is this show going?

Karen won me over when she attended the exec party with Jim and told him she'd slept with half the guys there. Priceless. She's got a brain, decent job and sass.
Pam = wishy-washy receptionist who dates abusive thugs.

They need to get rid of someone. There are too many secondary characters competing for screen time.
I was hoping Andy would get the heave-ho, but his character has actually provided some amusing moments since he came back from anger management.

Karen needs to stay. I was against the new people at first, but now I love them all.
Or...
Karen needs to stay. How could Rashida think that FOX is not going to cancel her show after three episodes?

what the hell was she thinking doing a pilot for fox? that's an automatic death knell for a career in television. is there anything on this season that's lasted more than one season aside from the simpsons?

if NBC decides to stretch out the show to an hour, i would hope they keep her or at least give her a clause in a new contract that states if FOX fails her, then she comes back.

Like some of the other commenters, I liked Karen better earlier this season than I do now -- but overall, I still really like her and Rashida. She has become a bit pigeon-holed in the whole "Jim's girlfriend" thing, but in the episode two weeks ago where they all made bets about the behavior of other people in the office, seeing how out-of-touch she was with the insanity of Scranton was hysterical. Plus, I think she could still be a good character even after the inevitable Jim/Karen demise.

While I do think that the character hasn't been given as much to do in the newer episodes, but I don't think she's treading water. The Office is a comedy, but it isn't a sitcom where the characters are just their to serve the jokes. What I love about the show are that these are real people. They may be quirky people, but they seem real. And Jim and Karen's relationship is in a bit of trouble, which seems real to me too. I would like her to stay. She's sassy, funny and her relationship with Jim is great to watch. Even if she breaks up with Jim, I would love for them to keep her around.

Bgdc is a misogynist I think. And not the Michael Scott good kind. I love the subtlety of Pam's character. One of my favorite moments from this season was Michael and Pam at the art show. Jenna Fisher is great, and plays the roll well.
I wouldn't be upset if Karen left. I too love the unrequited storyline of Pam and Jim.
I hated Andy until this week when he finally did something for himself (realizing the wanted posters looked like Dwight and bringing them home to hang up around his neighborhood).

I'm a misogynist because I hate people like Pam? Hmmm, let's get this straight, I like the smart, strong, intelligent female character and dislike the wishy-washy girl with no self-esteem and a penchant for dating thugs.
Try again. Ad hominem is fun.
You want the goody-two-shoes-girl to dump the mean boyfriend and hook up with the funny guy everybody roots for. Snooze. Seen it before. The unrequited love thing was played out before Sam and Diane ever hit Thursday nights. I don't need to see it re-hashed with one character that simply bore me to tears. Jim's awesome, but Pam...Pam's character is just insultingly bland and awful. She's everything a parent might fear a child will grow up to be...
