Less than two weeks ago, we pondered if the spin-off would be better than Grey's Anatomy based on the information and spoilers that had leaked so far. Now that the two Grey's Anatomy's episodes serving to launch the potential spin-off have aired, it is time to revisit our "Grey's Anatomy vs. the spin-off" article and reflect on if we were right or not and decide what series is better based on what aired last night.Since we've been watching Grey's Anatomy for three seasons now, it's easy to state the facts for and against the show. Let's focus on Private Practice, the spin-off. Here is a small list of comments I wrote down as I watched to help me decide which series I preferred. Feel free to comment and add your own pros and cons to help us decide between the original and the spin-off.
- The chemistry between Tim Daly and Kate Walsh is almost too hot to handle! Tim Daly is playing the type of character he plays best: serial monogamist hottie who owns a room when he enters it.
- Merrin Dungey is back from her Alias death and cloning (okay, she appeared in a few other series but we remember her most for her role as Sydney Bristow's best friend) and she's now all bitter and grown-up!
- The characters have a lot of excess baggage, which will be helpful to have interesting storylines.
- The setting and the positions held by the characters are different than those on Grey's, so it will set a different light on medicine, including alternative medicine.
- The characters have an interesting bond between one another. It's fun to watch.
- What's that about the talking elevator? Is the show trying to throw in some sci-fi element? It will get as annoying as Meredith pretty soon. I hope they ditch the talking elevator.
- The series has a lighter attitude and doesn't seem to take itself as seriously as Grey's.
What show will you watch next season (if the spin-off is picked up)? Only one of them? If so, which one and why? Both?
Let your voice be heard and take part in our poll. The poll will close on May 10.

I'm sorry, but this chick cannot hold her own show. It just seems so flaky, the doctor co-op, the dumbed-down chemistry...It's just stupid. The only good thing about the spin-off episode was Tim Daly. Now he was nice to look at. But, none of these people can carry this show. There is something so superficial and empty about it. I like Addison in Seattle. ABC: please dont pick this up.

I see that from the http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com, the pickup of this show is almost certain.
Too bad. How could a show so badly premised be spun off from one so decent?
This show is pulling teeth bad -- you'd schedule an appointment to your dentist for the time slot this show is on, just so you wouldn't miss anything.
Great cast, extremely bad idea. What the hell were they thinking?

From the little that we've seen from this show, I get the "Boston Legal" vs. "The Practice" feel. While both are about law, BL is definitely a little lighter and funnier. I feel the same way about the GA spinoff.

OK, for me the whole LA segments were just not fun. To me it was all just Grey's reset in LA where things are "Alternative" and "hip" and well, frankly it was lame to me. Let Addison come back to Seattle, deal with life, cope with her struggels. And as for life in Seattle. Who wrote this episode? Some Ex-ER writer? Grey's used to leave me with warm happy fuzzies. This was just depressing. Addison can;t have kids, Meridith loses a woman she was just getting used to and of course her Dad was a flake. I'm so sick of George and Izzy I could scream.
I did love the wedding planning. That was at least true to form and I loved Calli trying to be a sport. I like her. At this point the poll is swinign towards Grey's -- I hope the network takes the cue and put's it all back together. Otherwise it will just be another good show gone stupid!

Hi I am a huge fan of Greys Anatomy, I was so looking forward to a two hour showing last night, it was so bad, that I actually fell asleep watching it. The spin off part with Addison, was so week and it was annoying to watch. I feel the writer/writers seriously need a makeover, Season 1 and 2 were so amazing, but its obvious they are running very low on good story lines.
Very disappointed!!

I think Addison can hold her own show and I really like Merrin Dungey in this. I will watch anything with Taye Diggs but I wish other people would too so his shows wouldn't get canceled so often. I don't get the Judging Amy chick and wish they would lose her. I wasn't interested in her at all and I was quoting WHMS "he just doesn't want to marry meeeeeee!" at her.
I didn't see the chemistry with Tim Daly and Kate Walsh. I like Tim alot but he just seemed stiff here. The chemistry seemed forced, especially since all he did was stare at her in the first scene. Was it Spies he was in? That was great and I liked him more as a Remington Steele kind of spy than a new age doctor.
Please drop Piz from the cast and find a new hunk. He is not hunky at all and that made the surf board scene seem just silly.
I think the show needs some fine tuning but it has potential. I love the Addison character and I think Kate Walsh is a brilliant actor. She can do drama one second and comedy the next. Her facial expressions are priceless.

Huge disappointment and the longest 2 hrs on TV....with Grey's, I feel 60 minutes flies. Hard to believe it was even related to Grey's....just not in the same class at all.
Refresh, fine tune, rescue or the spin off will go to TV graveyard.

Can't really compare the two since the Addison spin-off "pilot" episode happened within the Grey's Anatomy framework. Yes, the tone was slightly different, but obviously they tried their best to make the Addison Show a Grey's clone in order to grab as many Grey's fan to the Addison Show bandwagon. In addition we have 3 seasons of Grey's vs. this sorta episode of Addison's show. Not fair to compare.
Now that THAT disclaimer is out of the way, I'll take the bait. If we just compare the "two" shows from their respective storylines in last night's episode then definitely the edge is with Addison's Show (someone from the other thread called it Oceanside Medicine... which I really like). Why? New pretty cast! New pretty location! Addison looking amazing! Fun medicine drama (low sex drive and baby with 5 parents). Then there's Grey's with the depressing (and for now completely useless) Susan death, the Gizzie debacle, and NOT ENOUGH Sandra Oh.
I actually joked with my friends that maybe, just maybe they made the Grey's portion last night so sad and blah that the viewers would see Oceanside Medicine in a more favorable light.

I usually look at my watch during GA because I get disappointed when it ends! Last night I looked at my watch because I couldn't wait for the torture to end. The LA scenes were bland, not one of the new characters was even slightly intriguing, they were all generic cookie cutter central casting people. The only slightly interesting thing was when Addison was informed she was barren. But even their patient of the week was a yawn.
I couldn't wait for the regular Seattle scenes, but that even seemed sparse what with the ten hours of commercials, and I'm sure they tried to tone down that drama so as not to overshadow Addison's LA debut. I will definitely not be watching this new show. Oh, and that Tim Daly guy can't hold a candle to McDreamy. Or Preston. Or hell, even George.

This was terrible! I think the biggest disaster was the mesh of the two shows. Lame, lame, lame. I would have been more willing to watch the show if it didn't have the CSI-spin-off effect. I will probably give Private Practice another chance, but please no more of it this season on Grey's. Also--George and Izzie are very annoying, and Bailey needs more time on the show. I enjoy the Alex/Ava storyline. As a general wrap-up for last night's show--I think plenty of people will agree--BORING!

Keep Addison at Seattle Grace but find a way to bring Tim Daly with her - he's fabulous.

I loved the new spin-off! Grey's Anatomy has been my guilty pleasure for as long as it's been on, only lately I feel more guilty watching it. It's getting too cutesy and high-schoolish for my tastes with all the Mc's running around and the on-again off-again romances. So Private Practice was a breath of fresh air with relationships that seemed more grown-up to me. And with all the reproductively challenged people out there, I think it will draw a lot of interest. I'll be watching for it next fall.

I think we should stop comparing this show with Grey's Anatomy. Its not the same thing. You want Grey's watch Grey's. I love Private Practice and will be setting the DVR to record every episode.

I found myself switching channel and listening to csi instead, wich I normally NEVER do. I barely saw anything except for the end where Meredith gets slapped by her father.

It's apples and oranges. I say that because 1st-2nd season Grey's up until the Denny Fiasco was awesome. Ever since its been no form or substance.
