TV Squad HQ just received a missive from Warner Brothers and The CW. It's a joint statement that says that Gilmore Girls will air its series finale on May 15th (A representative for Warner Brothers confirmed the note).Yes, you heard me: series finale. After seven seasons, it looks like both the studio and the network have decided to pull the plug and end the show. There were rumors floating around that co-star Alexis Bledel was not going to sign a new contract for an 8th season, and the show couldn't really continue without her. Given the middling quality of the episodes this year, especially in the extremely rocky first half of the season, this seems like the right time to end the show, though it now seems like we're in a rush to the finish line to try to tie up all the show's loose ends.
So, this means we have two episodes left. Do you think Rory will get married to Logan? Will Lorelai and Luke take that boat trip that Luke was going to go on with his daughter April? And do you folks think the show needed more time to resolve these storylines? Let me know in the comments. The joint statement is after the jump.
Joint statement from The CW and Warner Bros. Television regarding "Gilmore Girls"
"Announcing the final season of 'Gilmore Girls' is truly a sad moment for everyone at The CW and Warner Bros. Television. This series helped define a network and created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television's most memorable, lovable characters. We thank Amy Sherman-Palladino, Dan Palladino, Dave Rosenthal, the amazing cast led by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, as well as the producers, writers and crew for giving us this delightful gem for the past seven years. We would also like to thank the critics and 'Gilmore' fans for their passionate support and promise to give this series the send-off it deserves."
GILMORE GIRLS finale airs Tuesday May 15 on The CW at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

I'm guessing if they're airing in on the 15th, they won't wrap up the storylines in a neat little bow, since the episode was shot before the show was cancelled.

I read somewhere that David Rosenthal said the last episode could serve as a season or series finale, so I guess we have our answer now. I'm mad - I was hoping to see Luke and Lorelai's wedding finally. Maybe there can be a reunion movie like with Growing Pains? A girl can dream...

But the show wasn't cancelled, it just ended. I'm sure they'll be some sort of resolution.

I THINK YOU SHOULD KEEP THE SHOW ONE MORE YEAR AND LET US HAVE A PROPER ENDING! WHY ARE ALL THE GOOD SHOWS GONG OFF?

I think this is great news. The series has definitely run it's course and I'm glad they are ending it instead of dragging it out another season. I hate seeing shows I love go further and further downhill, so it's nice to see that this one won't hit rock bottom before it ends.

I was an huge fan from the first episode, which I saw when it first aired. I stopped watching at the end of last season after spending most of the episodes wondering if there was anyone on the show I still liked (answer: Emily and Mrs. Kim). I think it's already overstayed its welcome by a couple of seasons. I'm glad they're not continuing to beat the dead horse any longer.

I am a longtime fan of the show, and though the last 2 seasons have been rather hit or miss, I still love the characters (all of them, even the annoying Mrs. Kim and the elder Gilmores!) and I will miss them. I just hope there is some resolution to the Luke/Lorelai relationship before the show ends in two episodes. I'm not holding out hope, though. AND I'd love to know if the writers are going to use the original "last line" that Amy Sherman-Palladino had in mind when she began the series.

Guess this means Veronica Mars will be renewed! Woo Hoo! I'm a fan of Gilmore, but this season has seemed so empty. I had to make myself watch this past week. I just hope that it does get the send off it deserves.

Far from meaning VM will be renewed, Tracy, this almost surely is the final nail in Veronica's coffin, and we can all "look forward" to a double-bill of reality programming on Tuesdays next year.

They can't cancel it so soon. Give them one more season to properly tie up the loose ends. This sucks. I really hope they change their mind.

You know what, I would rather have reality programing than the shows VM and GG have become. I really hope this is the nail in VMs coffin. And I was a huge supporter of VM and tried to get as many people as I could to watch, now I'm sorry I have them watching a show that has turned into such a shell of itself.

Whether you liked the show or not, its a shame that fans are probably going to get a rushed, unfulfilling ending after seven years.

If they continue it will end up like 7th Heaven...with regulars gone and new characters added; it just won't make sense anymore. I know a few people that will be saddened, but it has been on forever.

Yeah it's not canceled if it ends, and the writer said it could be used as an ending.
i think it's rather dumb of the CW not to try and pick up even only 13 episodes. What will CW have next year? Shity sitcoms, One Tree Hill and Smallville for one more year and Supernatural. What a great channel!
I do agree with the TV movie idea. Just make a 2 hour TV movie dealing with Rory working, Lor marrying Luke. It could be set a few years down the road.

With all the bad episodes this season there was plenty of space to get Luke and Lorelai back together in a good fashion. If you think this all ended to early blame the writers of the series. Period. They messed it up and every person in their right mind would have noticed that they were dead wrong in their ways over the winter holidays. They tried to get their act together this year and managed it quite well if you ask me, but it wasn't enough to make up for the huge amount of credit lost early on. You simply can't exchange all the head writers without a major backing of the production company and I guess that's why GG stayed on the air instead of being pulled halfway through the season (yes it was THAT bad for me).
Now let's just hope they promise a marriage for Rory and that Luke and Lor will take the boat trip and we'll have almost the same ending as Dawson's Creek Season 2 had which will be as much of a definate finale as every second quarter of a SuperBowl. None at all.
There will definately be enough room for an 8th season and at least a 2 hour movie to wrap things up. In no way they will be able to get everything together in a good way now. DC did it very nicely in their 2 hour series finale and if the executives at The CW had some balls they would've told the writers in January to write that ending instead of pulling the plug when it was too late.
Man I hate this. TV programming just sucks. I love GG and I could definately live with anouther season. As bad as it was this season was nowhere close to how bad 24 has gotten compared to the preceding season - that show is renewed. Everything is possible in TV Land it seems. Crap like According to Jim get's produced without a legitimate reason and lovely shows like Gilmore Girls end. *sigh*

I give a lot of credit to the guy who took the show over. The old creators ditched thei show after completely destroying everything about the show. Giving Luke a 12 year old just so he doesn't get married? That's bad TV writing.
I hope they show it on the same night as the American Idol finale. That would be too funny.

am i the only one annoyed by what the posters here consider a proper wrap-up to the series: luke & lorelai get married and rory gets married to... someone? i'm sorry, i thought rory's goal was to get settled into her CAREER, not a MARRIAGE. was the message of the show supposed to be: every woman needs a husband to define her? then i guess i wasn't really paying attention. what happened to "i'm a kayak, hear me roar"?
as far as i'm concerned, the relationship b/w luke and lorelai IS resolved. they're friends again. that's as it should be. who cares if any of these people get married? they already have each other. let it go.
the show has sucked for 2 seasons (at least). i think ending it now is the humane thing to do.

NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I am really sorry to see the show end. I watched it faithfully, even the first half of the seventh season, which was painful. It was going very well this spring. I had a lot of hope that the writers had energized and gotten the show back on its feet. It was funny again. And Luke and Lorelai had a relationship that was working, in its quirky way, again. How about a few more episodes, to do it justice and give fans some cheer?
